artwork of Ugo Gattoni
Ugo Gattoni
Gattoni is another illustration/ graphic design source who inspires and fascinates me. He is from the suburbs of Paris and studied graphic design at the EPSAA n Paris. Making his way as an illustrator, his first major exhibition included one enormous wall-sized drawing done entirely with a black fine-liner pen. He has gained a reputation for his detailed, surreal cityscapes. He has worked on big commercials projects, did some collaborations with his close friend Mcbess and also has many clients in the fashion and music industries.
The starting point of his drawings is often a story, which is developed along the project. Gattoni always pays careful attention to the many small elements in his drawings. He uses his imagination to make surreal scenes mixing body parts, still life, and architecture. Besides paper, Ugo is a curious artist working on other techniques, other materials, with a particular interest for arts and craft.
artwork of Whooli Chen
artists of interest
For this week, I wasn’t quite sure what to write about for my blog posts. After enjoying the last assignment so much, I was very excited to get started on Project 3. What I usually do is research other artists and find inspiration. I like to combine different styles and color palettes to tell a story and make the viewer feel present in a piece. Having little experience in digital media, it is obvious that my approach is still somewhat similar to traditional media. For the past few days I have been looking at a lot of inspiration online. Much of it can be represented in traditional media, but also applied to graphic design and product design. I’ll share some of my research here. Also, my tumblr has not been loading so my apologies for the lateness.
Whooli Chen
She works with delicate, ephemeral colors and carefully painted layers to take illustration to a peaceful, cohesive world. Chen is based in Taiwan and received her masters’ degree in illustration at the University of the Arts in London. Many editorials are enhanced by her work. She has done multiple covers for the Little White Lies magazine. A love of literature accompanies her love of art/
Chen’s art astounds me for several reasons. First of all, the level of meticulousness is impeccable. I’m not sure what is touched up digitally but it is so incredibly fine and detailed. I also appreciate the stylistic elements that combine with realism. Across her work, the style and color palette is consistent. Even when the purpose, magazine cover, and book cover are so different, she is able to convey the same feeling of peace. The compositions are objectively balanced.
