Daniel is distant, fraternal, disputable, until the door closes behind them, at which point he crowds Max up against the wall and fits his mouth, wet, onto hers. His breath smells of vodka; his saliva, too, is astringent with it, like Max could get drunk from it. They’d had many things to drink that night but vodka shots were the last, Grey Goose. Max watched Daniel watch the bottle girl put it on the table. He didn’t flinch at the clink of her nails on the glass. Her eyes, lined slits under eyeshadow and lash, slid toward him as she poured out four glasses; she didn’t spill. A half-smile from her, a big toothy grin from him.
Daniel’s tongue, thick and large, is in Max’s mouth, pushing, insistent, on the velum. He pinches at the skin of her hips, what little hips she has. She’s stringbeanish, like a boy, not like Daniel, who is a man, broad shouldered and thick-chested. She’s watched him work out in basketball shorts, black fabric on the brown of his thigh. Now, she presses into that thigh with those slight hips, until a buzz zaps up from her pussy at the contact. He must notice a change in her breath; he responds in kind, adding pressure from his leg into her crotch. His hand goes to her scalp, brushes through the short hair there.
They arrived at the club, a building only escaping anonymity by the line outside, together. Daniel’s friends were already inside. On the line: guys in button-downs, girls in tight little dresses; their bags, held in their hands, had no straps. Max didn’t have a bag. Her wallet, in the front pocket of her jeans, bulged. Daniel led them to the front of the line. The bouncer’s eyes slid over Max; he nodded them both by. Daniel slung an arm over Max’s shoulder, bent his head to speak directly into her ear. You’re lucky I’m here to get you in. Daniel’s friends were waiting; they stared at her; she knew what they were thinking. Who is that? What is that?

He'd promised it when Luca was driving the last stint and the rain started falling and Christian turned around on his pit wall stool, said we're bringing him in for cut slicks, do you—
Maro said yes. He clasped Christian's hand, which meant, I'll bring it home. He went to put on his helmet and his gloves. As he passed the number 3 Mercedes on the way out of the garage he couldn't make himself look. He kept his eyes down, looking at the ground beneath his feet and then when he got out into free air at Luca, coming in. Dani wasn't there. He'd wept in the car in sight of the cameras and then disappeared somewhere. Jules wasn't there. He'd been sleeping; came out of the motorhome to meet it written in Max's face and the corpse of their dreams jacked up in the garage, wheelless and silent. Luggi wasn't there. He hadn't cried when the car was rolled back, like he hadn't when Ayhancan took it on the last lap, like Maro didn't know if he had when the concrete took him and shattered him in Daytona. Back in the car in Ochersleben weeks after and Luggi had shown him the scar and laughed but not told him that. Not that Maro had asked.
Maro heard all of it from the red-eyed mechanics. He hadn't seen any of it. He'd been in the car.
He's not in the car now. The Eifel night air is cold and rasps with the wind in the trees; carries the hushed murmur of the other drivers, standing in a circle at the edge of the clearing. Even the bodyguard has taken a couple of steps back, although he's still keeping an eye on the pair of them; on Max, who is leaning back against the hood of Maro's cheetah with unblinking eyes under the brim of his cap, the unspoken challenge: So. You wanted this. You made it this far. What are you going to do now?
