SS-Obersturmführer Hans-Jörg Hartmann with his adopted son Werner. The child was born in a Lebensborn home. The SS provided both wife and son. Hartmann married the child’s mother (October 1940) and adopted the boy. The photograph was taken about that time. This was less than a year before Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa (June 1941). This meant that Harmann had little time to get to know his wife and son. Hartmann was part of the 5th SS-Panzer Division Wiking which plunged into Ukraine.
