Anyway, Brett & Mat interview from the latest issue of Rockin’on.

Here are some notes from them, my rough translation:

>The next album will be more darker one

>(interviewer asked them why they start playing Stay Together although Brett hated to play it) Because we’ll have to play any songs live sooner or later, and playing those songs we haven’t played for a long time is exciting. And it doesn’t matter how I feel about those songs. To keep going well without losing my interest in what I’m doing might need playing rare songs live, whether I like it or not.

>DMS is really difficult to play live, so it’s fantastic when we could play well . That album has real power and silence, so to play this in Japan is especially nice. Like, in Europe some people keep talking while any gigs but Japan is different. When the song stops then the perfect silence comes in Japan, and all we can hear is just breaths of 2000 fans. It’s amazing.

>There’re 5 songs for new album already, and we start making record after this summer.

Another Man Issue 18, Suede. Every trace is a testament to time's glory.

Suede: To flow is to will.

Suede's story is no longer just that narrow waterway a few young men once carved out in their attempt to escape an ordinary life. With time, it has grown into an intricate, ever-flowing river network — intertwining the lives of the band members themselves while quietly merging with the lives of countless listeners. Some come to recognize their own youth here; others lay down their unspoken regrets and restless hearts. Some ride its current to push forward; others find a brief solace during dry seasons.

"After so many experiences — today, can you still say, 'This too shall pass'? Has everything, after all, flowed?"

"Of course," they replied after a moment of reflection. "But you cannot just sit there and wait for it to flow. If you want to achieve anything — in life, in creation — you must make things flow. You must make everything flow."

Suede: A Rock Band That Wears Women's Clothing and No Ripped Jeans

"We were definitely the only five people within a thirty-mile radius of the studio not wearing oversized, baggy ripped jeans!" joked lead singer Brett Anderson, referring to the cover shoot for Another Man China.

This band — once frequently featured on magazine covers and at the center of pop culture conversations — has never really been a follower of fashion. And if there was indeed some logic behind their unique early style, the answer still lies in Britishness. "Bands from upper-class backgrounds deliberately dress down, while bands from working-class backgrounds try hard to dress smartly," Brett explained.

From women's sheer lace cover-ups to silk printed jackets, Brett wore almost anything. Regarding those looks that were later endowed with various cultural meanings by the media, Brett said his original motivation was actually quite simple: to dress up, to add a sense of ritual and spirit to performances, and to make himself different from others.

"I'm pretty sure I did it to fill the absence of female figures in my life with artificial substitutes. Before I was mature enough and confident enough to be myself, I was always trying to become someone else — trying on clothes that never quite fit me, building fragile, multi-layered shells for myself," Brett later wrote. "Many men spend their entire lives maintaining this fragile reserve, desperately trying to become almost-fictional characters, awkwardly piecing together fragments collected from idols, parents, and peers."

Speaking of Suede's first visit to China in 2003, bassist Mat Osman recalled: "That was a truly important performance, not just entertainment. We sensed that for many in the audience, it might have been their first-ever rock show, so we felt a sense of responsibility — as if we, on that stage, represented the entire culture of Western rock music."

Now approaching their sixties, Brett and Mat once talked about the subtle, complex feelings they have when performing "So Young" at this age: carrying on singing about youth carries a hint of awkwardness; yet they still deeply enjoy throwing themselves into the song and singing along with the audience, because they know there will always be a young face in the crowd — someone at that stage in life where a band, a song, some distant and indistinct emotion matters more than anything else, someone waiting to be struck by a song for the first time, to resonate with a band.

Suede’s music carries an amber-like quality in China — it gently seals the particular sensitivity, fragility, loneliness, and desire of each generation of youth, still unblunted by reality. A generation will eventually grow old, but someone, somewhere, is always hearing Suede for the very first time.
