Any thoughts on Alan Moore's Marvelman/Miracleman?

When you hand an existing character off to Alan Moore, you are not getting it back the way you left it, see also: Swamp Thing, Watchmen, Supreme.

Miracleman probably goes the most overtly brutal and dynamic shift of any of these but also its permissible because Marvelman only exists because a UK publisher couldn't run anymore Shazam (Captain Marvel) material and had to create some copyright-bypassing analogues. Does anyone in the UK actually care about Marvelman and the potential sanctity thereof? Anyhow Miracleman (the name of the character here in the US even though the distribution rights belong to Marvel) is a goodie but I find it does rely a lot on shock value more than probably any other Moore comic I've read. It works, but it can be exhausting for the more squeamish amongst us. The ending also feels like it came after a string of story arcs that should fill in the gaps but do not actually exist. Overall "superhero deconstructions" have been made into such fodder that it's probably ruined the term "deconstruction" in its entirety, but, Miracleman is peak superhero deconstruction in that it literally tears apart the safety of the concept of the superhero to shreds and ensures it can't be put back together.

Back in 2023 when I got to go to an Alan Davis signing, we were instructed to not bring up or show Miracleman at all, everything else was cleared. It seemed a bit odd at the time but now knowing that Alan Moore is a jackass amongst the people that personally know him and takes any potential slight as an opportunity to never speak to someone again, yeah it tracks.
