Happy Hauntings, folks!
Today weâre gonna take a look at one of the more fun horror films Iâve seen this year, Happy Death Day. Iâm gonna preface this with sayinâ that I did not have high hopes for this one, but I sure as hell was gonna grab a bottle of Petite Syrah and my favorite girl friend and enjoy the hell out of it!
Boy, was I surprised! This film was a blast to watch, way funnier than I thought it would be, and I completely fell for the twists and turns. At first glance, the film seems to be a jumble of well-known film tropes in the vein of Groundhog Day and Scream, but just when you think you know whatâs going on, the whole thing takes a sharp left turn which left me on the edge of my seat wondering what the hell might happen next.
Now, I really should have gone with a Cupcake wine for this one (Red Velvet is one of my faves), but the Syrah did the job just fine. Light and playful, just like this movie, this was a damn good pairing and one that I fully recommend!

The Jock, The Nerd, The Hot Chick, and the...Merlot?
Happy Hauntings, folks!
Iâm getting a jump start on my weekend, mostly âcause Iâm sitting at home sick, curled under a blanket, watching the gloomy LA weather that rolls through once every seven years, but that means Iâve got time to flick through some old favorites and exciting new options for horror viewing! In the belated American spirit of Veterenâs Day (side note, huge thanks to all our active and retired Vets, we wouldnât be here if it werenât for each and every one of you), I decided to check out the indie horror section on Amazon which suggested just the film I needed today.
I present to you, one of my new favorite horror comedies, Presidentâs Day!
In the vein of Cabin in the Woods and Scary Movie, this indie treasure pokes so much fun at the horror genre while also teaching us all a little something about American History. Seriously, the amount of historical puns and jokes blows my mind, and even if it were a terrible film (which is most definitely is NOT), I still would have laughed my ass off.
From James K. Polk becoming a breakout character to each of the stereotypical teens finding their own unique story arcs, this was such a joy to watch, and the perfect thing for me today.
Now, thanks to my illness, I didnât pop open a bottle of Madeira (Fun Fact: this was James Buchananâs personal favorite), but I did allow myself to indulge in some warm, fuzzy, mulled wine! I grabbed a bottle of Merlot and followed one of my momâs best slow cooker recipes and Iâm not gonna lie, I actually feel 10 times better than I did when I woke up this morning. Iâm not saying wine will cure your illness, but Iâm not sayinâ it wonât either. (For the exact recipe I used, if you wanna follow along at home, click here!)
Iâm going to leave you all with a few fun presidential wine facts! Woo!
As I mentioned before, James Buchanan loved his Madeira (and Sherry...he really favored those fortified wines!), and also had a bit of a reputation as a tank. At one time, his annual wine budget was $3,000, which is roughly $80,000 today! He also once drank 16 toasts on the Fourth of July, which just goes to show you, weâre not the only ones who rang in Americaâs birthday with an absurd amount of drinking.
Thomas Jefferson was the original âwine presidentâ and he owned an extensive collection of French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish wines and it seems he favorite the French Bordeaux, perhaps thanks to his time as Ambassador to France.
Richard Nixon was the first president to bring Californian wine (and American wine in general) into the White House, serving it every one of his guests. Often.
Well, thatâs all Iâve got for you today! Stay Spooky!

Slow Cooker Mulled Wine
My mom and I use this recipe as a base.
What you need!
20 whole cloves
2 clementines
2 750-ml bottles Merlot
3 cups fresh apple cider
2 cinnamon sticks plus 8 for garnish (garnish optional)
2 whole star anise
2 cups tawny Port (I use Grand Marnier instead)
Directions!
Press stem (pointed) end of 10 cloves into each clementine, piercing through the skin.
Place tangerines, wine, cider, 2 cinnamon sticks, and star anise in large slow cooker.
Bring to a bare simmer over medium-low heat; cook gently for 20 minutes.
Mulled wine can be made 2 hours ahead. Cover and let stand at room temperature. Rewarm gently over medium-low heat before continuing.
Not âTill Youâve Had My Tart!
Itâs Winesday and you know what that means! Time to uncork a new bottle, turn down the lights and settle in for some mind-boggling frights! Tonight I decided to finally get my butt out to the movies and see Yorgos Lanthimosâ new film, The Killing of a Sacred Deer which meant I needed to also find just the right pairing to go with it.
Now, Lanthimos is known for his relatively bizarre take on film, with The Lobster being well known for itâs lack of adhering to normal laws of the natural world. Sacred Deer is no different. Thereâs a certain level of suspended disbelief needed to watch this film, but thatâs not something I really have an issue with. The film does a great job taking the audience along itâs crazy ride, assuming that the viewer will jump right in and not think too much about the fact that the antagonist can presumably infect people with a fatal disease at will.
Personally, I loved it. It was weird, it was thrilling, and it reminded me in some ways of a more subtle Michael Hanekeâs Funny Games (both the Austrian film and his scene for scene remake), another horror favorite of mine. Iâll definitely have a post on that one in the future, so stay tuned!
Wine-wise, I went with something light yet complex, opting for a Pinot Grigio, specifically Settecieli Pinot Grigio. Itâs light, crisp, and not too sweet, just enough to cut through some of the oddities from Sacred Deer. The film is at times odd, funny, disconcerting and heartfelt, just the thing youâd expect from Lanthimos, and he does not disappoint. Definitely recommend!

Halloween: the Night HE came Home
true evil never dies.
Alright ghoulies! Letâs kick this thing off the right way and just dive right in.
Now, I will be the first to say I am not the end all be all of reviews, wine, film or otherwise. I do this because itâs somethinâ I love and hope some people out there in internetland might find some enjoyment here too. That said, take any, all or none of any advice you might find in this here blog. You do you, boo! (Get it? Boo? Like a ghost? ...Iâll see myself out now.)
I know Iâm a few days late from Halloween, but I was a âlil busy doing, well, Halloween shenanigans. Not to fear, though! In my house, every day is Halloween and thatâs what this blog is all about.
As I was browsing my local Ralphâs, I came across this red blend I havenât tried. Not that itâs hard, I donât usually pick up blends, despite the fact that I have tried some bomb diggity ones. Well, tonightâs episode is brought to you by a blend going by the name ofâŚ. *insert some creepy music*
LUNATIC RED, a blend from California.
THE BREAK DOWN: 32% Sangiovese, 24% Malbec, 20% Alicante Bouschet, 18% Petit Verdot, 6% Petite Sirah
Iâm not gonna lie, I didnât have a movie in mind when I went to the store, but after seeing this on the shelf, I couldnât not pair it with Halloween (1978), featuring everyoneâs favorite escaped lunatic, Michael Meyers! Really, the pairing couldnât have been more clear for me, plus I didnât get to watch this John Carpenter classic at all this season (tragic, I know).
Now, Iâm usually a Pinot Noir kinda gal, but lemme tell you, this blend is gonna go right up there on my top ten list. Itâs smooth, rich and lush, with a well rounded body and just the right amount of spice. Itâs a bit fruit forward, but not overly sweet. Thereâs definitely some earthy tones to it, but thatâs exactly why I love it. Also to note, I got this baby for $10 at my local Ralphâs, which puts it square in my price range for frequent doses. Well, thatâs about all Iâve got for you folks today! Stay tuned to see what pairings we get into next! Happy Haunting!

Intros!
Heyo wailing winos! Allow me to introduce myself: Iâm Sarabeth, a horror fiend and frequent vineyard attendee living in Los Angeles, CA. I started this blog as an outlet for me love of all things horror and my extra love of pairing those frights with wines! When Iâm not sippinâ and screaminâ, Iâm hanging out with my dire wolf, Odin (fair warning, there will be plenty of pup love to mix up the horror).
Iâm a goofy person and tend not to âfit inâ with a lot of the âexperiencedâ wine tasting crowd, so expect to see a lot of silliness around here. Then again, most self-professed wine snobs are looking to pair their grapes with delicious snackage rather than what blend of flavors and grapes are gonna compliment my choice of gorey feature for the evening. Be on the look out for memes, GIFs, and frightful clips galore!
Stay tuned for all manner of terrors and tannins, and I hope you enjoy your visit! *cue spooky music*
