a night out // ara colbert & francesca rundlett
Was it too soon? It had been a little more than five months ever since he moved from California. It had been five months since he left his ex-fiancee. Was that enough time to recover from the heavy damage she had caused when Ara found out she was screwing around with his very own brother behind his back? What did it matter? His ex had no problem finding a replacement for him, soâ Ara decidedâ he had the right to try and find someone for himself too. The time it took for Ara to finally decide what to wear that evening was almost unhealthy. All he had in his closet were mostly just white shirts and denim jeans. The other variety of clothing he had were his suits, one of which the accountant wore earlier that day when he had met the ever captivating Francesca. What few articles of clothing in his wardrobe that were not white tees or suits, most of which were presents from Christmas or maybe years before then and probably still had tags on them, were laid out on his bed. Even so, Ara had no idea what to wear. He didnât want to seem like he wasnât trying or that he was trying too much (even though he really was exerting a little more effort than usual.) The man had even resorted to googling, âwhat to wear on a first date for guys.â He found the articles to be at least a bit helpful, but it didnât quite prod him toward finally deciding what to wear. He had ultimately decided to put on a white dress shirt with rolled-up sleeves, a pair of dark jeans, a black cardigan, and black dress shoes. Ara had spent the rest of the time between then and seven oâ clock that evening researching on where he should take his date. He wanted some place they could sit and talk, with great food and great ambiance of course. But the man barely knew the place. So he learned what he could, choosing from the few restaurants that seemed to have excellent reviews. An hour before he was expected to meet her at her place, Ara had set out to a candy store that he passed by often on the way to work. He had bought a glass bear jar with chocolate inside of it, placing it in a mint green gift bag. It was for that split second that he felt ready for the evening. And then he had to start driving to her place. He took his time to put her address on the GPS for directions to her place. And then he took a few more moments to stare at his phone, as if it would help him gather his guts. He had arrived ten minutes earlier, still. That didnât exactly do him a favor as he waited in his car just to pass the time. He really was going on a dateâ after the longest time, he was going on a date. He had thought it wouldâve taken him longer to get to the point where heâd show any interest toward another person. Francesca came as a very pleasant, and very nerve-wrecking, surprise. A minute on the clock, he stepped out of his car and to her porch. His insides were a mess while he made his way to her apartment. He took a moment to straighten up the creases on his clothes that were barely there. He paced in front of her door before he eventually gathered the guts to knock. Too soon, the door swung open. He definitely wasnât ready for this. He hadnât remembered her to be this stunning (although she was stunning enough from what he remembered.) He stood there in awe long enough to put a silence between them before he realized that sheâd spoken. He let out a feeble chuckle. âYou look absolutely divine,â Ara breathed out. âOh,â he exclaimed once he remembered he had her gift at hand. â And I got this for you,â he smiled as he handed the paper bag to her.
Certainly, it had beenmuch too long since Francesca had last been out on a date. Her schedule hadbeen brutal for the past few years, not that that was anyoneâs fault but her own.Between having two jobs -- one of which required frequent community outreach â Francescararely had time to herself. And when she did, it was a surprise that oftenrequired a bottle of wine and a slice of cheesecake from the ever famousCheesecake Factory. Then again, who was Frankie to deny a night out, especiallyone from someone as handsome as Ara? Who would have thought that she would bestanding here, waiting to go out with somebody who she had only met thatmorning? By chance, at that. Sheâd have to thank her iPhone charger later.
The last thing Francesca had expected was for Ara to bring her something before their date. Then again, the last thing she had expected to happen this day was for her to be asked on adate. There was no denying that today had been quite full of surprises, thatwas for sure. Taking the bag daintily, Francesca peeked through the mint greenbag, smiling at the sight of a bear filled with chocolates. âHow thoughtful,â she thought, smilingback at Ara. âOh my God,â She started, lifting the glass jar from its packagingcarefully. âYou didnât have to,â She continued, walking towards her dining roomto display her newly acquired treat. As she began to walk back towards Ara,Francesca subtly gave herself a once-over in her mirror, blushing severely asshe realized there were still a few rollers wrapped in her hair. How in theworld had she managed to miss those? Working quickly to unroll the bright pinkcurlers from her hair, Frankie let out a small, embarrassed laugh. She ran herfingers through her hair, making sure she wouldnât have another shockingdiscovery for herself to find again later.
Taking a deep breath totry and quell the flush that had spread across her cheeks, Francesca turnedaround to find Pharaoh, her feline friend, personally greeting Ara in her own, feline way. The white and grey cat eyed him with her bright blue eyes, glancingat him curiously as she slowly approach the man, her tail raised withintrigued. It surprised Francesca, given that Pharaoh almost always turned theother cheek whenever she had guests over. Francesca watched as Pharaohcontinued to approach Ara, her nose tipped carefully in his direction beforeshe affirmed his presence, quickly turning around and trotting off to herclimbing tree in the corner of the living room. âShe likes you,â Francescastated as she retrieved one of her dressier jackets from the coat closet, slipping her arms through her before releasing her hair from the confines ofthe collar. Motioning towards her front door, Frankie retrieved her wallet, biting her lip as she glanced at her date again. âShall we?â  m
