Using makeup removal towelettes and then framing them, today’s make up becomes a work of art. Of all the things I have found so far, this is probably of closest relevance to my idea.

I found tumblr a useful way of making sure I was both on task and proactive towards my learning, I also found it a great way of compiling design based work that interested me and it allowed me to write comments/notations on those pieces, without getting lost in the wormhole that is the internet (pinterest). The archive allowed me to look at patterns of interest and inspiration, which helps you make sure that you have a clear vision. I did not particularly find it useful for reflagging in this instance, which was just due to the tangent that I was hoping to take my work down, but it was interesting to watch your classmates reflect upon their interests and pieces.
Reflection
By exploring and searching, I have found that I would like my work to take a similar direction to Anymade Studio, Metahaven and James Victore - bold and bright on the surface, but with typically deeper meanings once you investigate the work. Typically these works invite you to have a discussion rather than throw the subject matter in your face with a simple photograph. The work inspires you to think harder. My interests typically lay in the areas of clean, crisp colour, shape, transparencies, cut outs and creating texture through layering or overprinting. All of these are powerful tools for creating something that has depth and keeping a reader/viewer engaged.
Prototyping, experimenting with shape. Triangles are typically unexpected when opening a book. By introducing these sharp edges, it changes the way someone will interact with the book.

Binding techniques Out of all the binding techniques we have used to date, this is my favourite because it is cheap and quick.
Keller Easterling and Metahaven Today I saw the Metahaven book I previously featured on here in the flesh, plus a book by Keller Easterling which was approached in a similar manner. This ignited the "who wore it better" debate - it doesn't matter who did it first, or who ripped off who - what matters is who did it better. In my opinion, Metahaven. I enjoy the choice of stock and that they almost invite the reader into a pretty heavy topic of discussion by lightly hinting at the subject matter through something more than just the title. The other book while it has its aesthetic purpose in being approached in that manner, the images seen through the holes do not add another layer to the topic.
Polish Designers of the 20th Century
This is simple, but I find it effective. It is still bright, so stands out from publications around it. My favourite part is the spine, a creative way to showcase all the designers involved.

Cain & Abel by Marcin Markowski
Two elements stand out to me: the creative use of typography and the combination of horizontal and vertical type. Once again, this goes against the norm of what is expected in a book, making it more interesting.

Kelpe by Anymore Studio This reminds me of a cross between glitching, tv static and late 80′s/early 90′s graphics. I like the contrasting colours, if the background was plain it wouldn’t have the same level of interest.

Palette No 6: Transparent by Visionary HK As mentioned previously, transparency is an area of interest to me because there’s a delicate nature to the materials, it creates interest and ignites curiosity, but at the same time it is quite literally transparent and there’s a sense of honesty to that.

Hotel 21:30 2nd Edition. Art Book. By Hachetresele Studio
I like the concept of using black and white imagery and adding a single spot colour. This is simple and relatively cost effective in comparison to using multiple spot colours, it keeps a feeling of continuity throughout the publication but also creates interest. While neon green isn’t my thing, I enjoy the concept.

I love that James can at times be brash and completely honest. As designers, sometimes we can get into a habit of biting our tongues. These stickers cannot be ignored.
By James Victore I have always been attracted to anything made by collage - there is a quality to them that is not found in artworks that are purely computer generated. I like that James has a tendency to draw over images making them a coherent piece, rather than something that could look disjointed. I also think that James uses his work to ignite a conversation, whether political or social. This inspires me to ask my own questions when creating artwork. Should it just look pretty, or should it send a message?

Arts in Society: California Institute of the Arts: Prologue to a Community, 1970
I am attracted to this piece because it deviates from the norm: a cardboard cover with neon text, only to open the book and see an unusual grid that seems to scream “put something in the negative space.” I enjoy pieces that experiment with expectations. The conventional book is changing to remain relevant.
