honestly, to me, the saddest thing about this whole spectacle (which i admit to have only witnessed secondhand since i follow a few of you on my personal) is that there is no cleverness or wit going on in those "rebuttals." i know some of you might think me shallow for placing such emphasis on that, but let me explain further: the reason so many of us admired him was because he was eloquent and was able to put fucked up thoughts into beautiful and brief words.
hell, to me, there is even some sort of sick pride to receiving a clever snide remark, because it means that i was able to cause such a profound effect on someone that i became the catalyst for dark humor
but what i see in these interactions with people on twitter is that he's not putting any thought whatsoever into these replies. he's not thinking 'ah this is a person of flesh and bone just like me, one that listens to what i produce and finances me so i can continue to export my creativity. i should probably be polite, perhaps not because of the fact that they buy my material, but because by virtue of being people, they deserve marginal respect.'
no, what i see in these interactions is pure bitterness
i can't imagine what he he's thinking when he decides to go on his prick parade but i can say this: it's one thing to be bitter at someone like a harsh critic- after all, when art is your livelihood, you're gonna feel compelled to defend it.
but these aren't critics he's retaliating against
these are teen girls, young women
people who not only pose no threat to him, but are actually of some use to him. if it weren't for them, all of franz ferdinand's album sales would just be composed of alex's mom and a suspicious man named "lexo kapranosson" (who is just him with a goatee)
yes it's true that some of us do pick apart what he says and then confront him, but we are the minority. we will never pose any danger to his lifestyle because most of us dont even live on the same continent as him. by the way he's reacting, i'm inclined to believe that he doesn't even inhabit the same existential plane as us.Â
im fine with him being an asshole to me and my entity, but i really hate that he insists on treating everyone this way, especially when everyone ive met in this fandom is nothing but kind, thoughtful and interested in the well-being of others
he's not being poetic, ironic, sardonic or anything like that when he's doing this. he's just being childish.
in conclusion, i think it's safe to say that we all knew that he was an asshole from the beginning. it only takes a few listens to start sensing some vague misogyny. but to see it manifest so suddenly, so clearly and so maliciously towards innocent people is, to be frank, really fucked up.Â
so yeah. this is coming from absolutely nowhere from my part (since i've been silent since last year), but i did wanna voice my support for people who want to (or have left) the fandom because of disagreements with kapranos.Â
