Rothko Mysteries abound! With this new somewhat clearer scan of this painting I noticed it appears to be this panting but a different scan, upside down and backwards (correct me if I am wrong!). It wouldnât be the first time a Rothko is mis-credited or turned the wrong way, but when it happens with two different dates, itâs a puzzle.Â
While I am inclined to believe the comprehensive info on this scan, I should mention that the Newark Museum makes no mention of this painting leading to more confusion. Itâs quite possible that both paintings exist but somewhere along the line scans got confused or switched. I will do some research on the matter and offer this view while we ponder yet another Rothko mystery.
