On this day, 18 July 1936, the day after the beginning of the right-wing military rising of general Francisco Franco, workers in Barcelona prepared to defend themselves. The Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT) union went to the Catalan government and requested arms to defend the democratically elected Republican government. But the Generalitat refused. So CNT members seized isolated armouries, as well as weapons from four ships in the harbour. The Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT) dockers' union was aware of a shipment of dynamite which had arrived in the port, so they were also seized, and the workers set about making home-made grenades. Every gun shop in the city was emptied, and motor vehicles were requisitioned and fitted with makeshift armour of metal plating and sandbags. Just before dawn the following morning, the battle for the city would begin. Found a great (free) documentary on the Freedom House Ambulance Service here- https://www.wqed.org/freedomhouse/ (has captions too)!
I can’t believe this is the first time I’ve heard about this. like for years I’ve been thinking “imagine if the police were in charge of ambulances and firefighting, all the horrible problems that would cause, wouldn’t it be better if they were a separate thing, etc” as a way to better understand/explain the fundamental problems with the existence of police. that framing was part of what made me start to understand why my friends were saying “ACAB” and “abolish the police”. I had no idea it was literally once historically like that and not just a hypothetical tbh

This is cool as shit, and a part of my own career’s history that I didn’t even know about.
Statement from the Casa de las Américas on July 13, 2026 A sinister specter is haunting the world: the specter of neo-fascism. Not even what
Statement from the Casa de las Américas
The primitive fascist tactic of stoking fear of a supposed “red threat” is resurfacing to justify repression and barbarism, precisely at a time when our region is witnessing the victories of far-right candidates willing not only to dismantle progressive programs but also to serve as pawns of the imperial agenda.
The definition of terrorism provided by the State Department spokesperson for the conference seems, more than anything else, to be a description of his own government’s covert or overt operations: “assassinations, kidnappings, threats against facilities and law enforcement, as well as attacks on critical infrastructure, military personnel, and the civilian population.”

i am begging democrats to take this threat to our elections as seriously as they take a fundraising deadline
“We have here again the old story. States run elections in the United States. This is guaranteed and mandated by the federal Constitution. Congress can set uniform rules for administering elections. The executive branch plays no role at all in setting rules for elections or administering them. The White House’s strategy is to use illegal means (threatened criminal punishment against state officials) to assert power or compel authority the Constitution simply doesn’t allow. This isn’t how anything works. A president cannot legitimately create by force powers that the Constitution specifically denies him.”
