“answer three: the sweet pollen-infiltrated air. obviously.” he wanted to ditch the conversation altogether. this was a waste of time, and she obviously was only going to pry deeper. if he left now, though, it would come across extremely suspicious and he only just got here. no need to raise any brows yet. “no, obviously not that. it’s mainly to clear my head. get away from all the noise back home. with the divorce and all.” divorce and all. thank god he was a decent liar otherwise he would’ve cracked a smile by now. the bullshit he was spewing was shocking even him. but if he was completely honest with himself, he knew he wasn’t fooling her… this nosy girl. at this point he had to make a choice… keep up the lie or confront her. the smart choice would be to keep up his weak ass lie. “look,” he halted his pace only to turn on the balls of his feet to look down on her. “you’re not stupid and we both know that. what do you know or what are you trying to learn?” guess we’re taking the dumb choice.
“mhm,” juno nodded slow again. this was a little amusing since she knew this wasn’t some divorce sob story he was trying to get away from. she knew. and, from the looks of it, he knew, too. she stopped suddenly in her tracks and met his eyes. he towered over her like the boys back in high school, back in middle school. but he had a different presence about him and she wanted to know what made him tick like that. she wanted to tick like that.
“you’re more than correct,” she hummed soft, “because i’ve heard about you. and i knew which cabin you’d be in. i don’t know everything, but i know enough. trust me, i don’t want to know everything. i just needed to know enough. the girls around camp wouldn’t stop flittering on about how strong you are, how handsome, blahblahblah.” juno had been mimicking the girls voices in a high-pitched, dazed fashion before dropping it just as easily as it had come. “i know you’re not all you seem, but i don’t care.” she took a step towards the boy, not one muscle in her expression changing. “i just want you to teach me. teach me how to fight like you. i want to be able to defend myself.”
