I feel like Darry being bisexual in my fanon maybe doesn’t register as “making sense” sometimes since it can feel very “why not just make him gay”. He almost exclusively bottoms with men and def has a pretty clear preference for men in my fanon too.

But from my pov there are some big reasons for this:

First off to me his preference is mostly just based on him finding masculinity the most sexually appealing. So even I think of John my oc—a man—presenting more androgynous or feminine at times was definitely something he kinda is a little offput by. He really finds femininity most attractive if something about it really stands out on a person. Like on someone who wouldn’t typically be expected to dress fem. Or if it’s very over the top and such

Additionally his attraction to women is definitely a lot less influenced by physical appeal cause again he is more sexually attracted to masculinity. With women he almost always has to have some existing relationship to find sex with her appealing. He also has a complex about feeling guilt around having sexual desires towards women he would assume it’s unwanted from… but really…. he just doesn’t think of women being capable of sexual desires like men 🫩So it’s very very rare he would willingly hookup as a one time deal with women over men. It makes more sense a little later in this post for why he in particular would assume women don’t enjoy sex. Sure religious teaching and society’s messaging doesn’t help

And then there are the societal pressures… If my Darry was born in modern times I don’t actually think he’d have almost any preference between women or men. But it’s like it’s been so instilled in him that he’s supposed to be having sex with women, that it causes a lot of internal conflict for him. It becomes really hard for him to tell where he’s ACTUALLY wanting things with a woman versus feeling like he just SHOULD want it. Does he really want to say yes to sex with this woman or does he feel less a proper man to say no?

Then there is the l added layer of his first and—depending on AU timeline—only, sexual experiences with women being mostly unwanted if not downright traumatic. I take his account of his first time in the outsiders tv show and put it in my fanon, but I treat it a lot more seriously. Even before I watched the tv show, I always wrote him from the standpoint of his first and coming experiences with women not fully being wanted. Explaining later-

In the tv show, they say his first time he was 15. I consider it an incident of peer pressure and he wanted to be a proper boy as taught who just always should want sex no matter what. I assume like pony it was with a grown woman. I think he really would talk about it crassly, as if nothing at all, like in the tv show. But really he does remember sobbing while she cleaned him up and not quite knowing why. He grinned and made over it highfiving them like everyone wanted with the rest of the football team. And then his only others for a long time or maybe forever were girls he was only dating for the sake of he and Paul not raising suspicions. And he would try his hardest to avoid sex with them. But ofc it always came down to “you’re a guy? Something must be wrong if you don’t want it” and so he’d do it anyways just to keep the peace and all. It makes a lot of sense that the only woman he canonically falls in love with in my main fanon was one he dated that was ace 😕

Also adds another layer that considering these are his only sexual experiences outside of Paul until John and later more. Ofc if these were his only experiences with sex, then yeah sure he thinks sex should just always make him feel bad inside in a way he can’t quite explain. It makes sense that he doesn’t really know about appropriate consent. It makes sense he doesn’t really get why people like Two-Bit seem so gung ho about sex. If makes sense he never really questions the way Paul treats him in bed either. To him ofc sex feels fucking awful but he’s supposed to like it because he’s a man and that’s how relationships are apparently supposed to work

So yeah, “functionally” Darry mostly leans towards men in my fanon, but while it is a good bit one, it’s not so much JUST an inherent preference
