I have no reason to say this, but in my mind palace, Darry is really interconnected in their neighborhood.
It’s not really intentional. He’s just a big favor for favor guy. Plus, his dad was the same way, so some of it he inherited. So, now when his father owed this lady a mowed lawn anytime he mowed their own, Darry does it for the price of a frozen casserole to bake on emergency, can’t be bothered to cook, days.
And now he’s added his own. Like he owes clean gutters in exchange for some family recipes. Or giving a couple other kids a ride home from Pony’s track practices in exchange for someone to drop in every once in a while when he has to be away to make sure no one’s set the goddamn house on fire.
