House in Chau Doc by NISHIZAWAARCHITECTS

Located in a suburb of ChauDoc town in AnGiang province, Southern Vietnam, this house is a sharing residence of 3 nuclear families who are kin. Although this project budget was tightened with local standards, which only allowed us to build a house with thin corrugated metal panels, we have tried to satisfy not only the regional spirits but also the rich lifestyle in which is fulfilled by sunlight, greenery and natural ventilation, as it were, living in a half-outdoor gardens.

Before we had Pantone Color Guide, there was no universally recognized system to identify colors. But there were attempts to make it, and probably the most impressive one came from the artist known only as A. Boogert, who back in 1692 created an impressive piece of literature about mixing colors.

Handwritten in Dutch, the “Traité des couleurs servant à la peinture à l’eau“ was an 800-page long guide on color and paint that was probably the most comprehensive piece on colors at the time. It featured color samples, descriptions and even instructions on how to create certain hues and change the tone by adding one, two, or three parts of water.

Medieval book historian Erik Kwakkel was the one who got the chance to examine the book, and as he translated part of the introduction, he concluded that the color book was intended as an educational guide. Sadly, there’s only a single copy of the book known to exist, so probably only a couple of the privileged few got to be educated by it.

The book is currently kept at the Bibliothèque Méjanes in Aix-en-Provence, France. (Source)

Branding & Interior Design for Kakigōri by LIE

“Kakigōri is a Japanese shaved ice dessert bar in Kuala Lumpur. We created a fictional character for the brand – Yuki, a lady made of snow yet fascinated by the tropical world. As much as she enjoys the hot weather, her body can’t stand the heat. To prevent herself from melting, she eats ice.”

LIE is an acronym of Little Ideas Everyday, an independent graphic design studio based in Kuala Lumpur. Founded in 2011, LIE works across a diverse range of visual communication projects. Constantly practice and seek for fresh approaches everyday, provide innovative, beautiful solutions for clients, as well as self-initiated projects. Not sticking with the norm or patterns, we believe there’s always room to explore in design.
