I'm assuming this is also related to my wip! A lot of the names in lord of gentle swords are not actually from filipino but from the languages I constructed for it, rooted in tagalog, ilocano, ilonggo and some sanskrit (plus the overall language family of maritime southeast Asia.) I also have names that are just tagalog / Hiligaynon words that I changed to sound more lyrical. My oc named "Sahrinta" is just from "sinta" which is a tagalog word that means "beloved". "Harilunan" is from the words "Hari" (ruler) and "Paraluman" (magnetic needle/compass) "Narakan" is from "Narra" which is literally just the name of a strongwood tree. "Kalimbahin" is the suggested tagalog word for "pink" by the commission of the filipino language. In antiquity, Kalimbahin was the word for the fleshy inside of a guava fruit. I liked using "Kalimbahin" as a word and name for "princess" in TLoGS because it sounded as lyrical as the actual tagalog word for princess, "Lakambini", and it reminded me of how Majapahit got its name. Fun fact, the tagalog word for "bitter" is "pait", similar to how pahit would be pronounced! Yay language family.
For more examples, I have the name Namwaren, and it's taken from Namwaran, which is a name that appears on the Laguna Copperplate inscription.
Some of the names of the sunderings (island states) here on my map are from actual prehispanic philippine cultures names; Like Sasaban, which is the name of a tagalog empress, according to traditional oral history of the tagalogs. Binsahaya is just "bisaya" in the language of the story, while Amihanang Pagali just means "northern Pagali"- Pagali is a name taken from the Bangkaw revolt, which was a revolt lead by a babaylan (priestess) named Pagali and a Datu (chief) named Bankaw.

Precolonial names from here in the philippines are hard to source, and there are so many differing cultures that have interlap and interaction with each other, it sucks that so much of our history is through the eyes of the colonizer. Songs and stories that managed to survive throughout the centuries feel like distant echoes. If only the dead could speak.
