Visiting Hours | Jim and Rapunzel
"Don’t mention it" would have been more appropriate than the terse "No" that he ended up sparing. But with no call to impress, and no desire or motivation, he replied thus, followed by a nasal sigh as he rummaged in the hall closet.
In the last few moments, Jim had, somewhat willingly, resigned himself to the humility of giving up his room. A lesson to an only child, raised an affectionate single mother. - In the most reasonable part of his conscience, it had been fixed for the last half hour. Yet the day’s experiences nearly threatened to rob him of basic chivalry.
With more conciliation with the furniture itself than a sense of obligation, Jim shuffled to the couch. An acquaintance from the nights in which sleeping in his own bed had proven troublesome, a faint grin of familiarity would have greeted it with anticipation of minimal comfort, if not for exhaustion.
He began making his pallet as he unfolded then flapped the sheets, tossing the spare throw over it. Haphazardly arranged, but sufficient enough, Jim rounded the couch toward the hall and fished out another set of sheets. He entered his room and began prying and snatching away the week-old fittings. Balling them quickly, he tossed them into the corner by his closet.
"Um - room’s yours. ‘f you need to turn on the fan, just press this button." A tower fan, a convenient device, he pointed at the button on the far left of the interface. There was also that dip in the middle of the mattress that he should have mentioned, but deigned not to out of embarrassment. - It was nearly ten years old and in need of pitching.
Though the sheets on was the least he could have done, and because he wasn’t entirely disagreeable, he did, though tiredly, and when he was finished, cupped his hand from his forehead back and made to leave Rachel to herself.
"Okay... thanks. Good night."
She wouldn’t have minded, sleeping on the couch, though had little to no time to speak up after he’d quickly made the bed before departing the bedroom.
Left in the dark of Jim’s room, Rachel glanced over her shoulder at the door as he pulled it along with him, before she walked on over and closed it gently. Deciding to leave him be, she climbed on into the made bed, pulling the covers over her body. It was reasonably comfortable, although she felt quite awkward, not being in her own bed.
Laying down properly, head on the pillow, she glanced up at the ceiling, curling her legs, the blanket pulled up to her neck. Forcing her eyes closed, she tried to tune out all thought of the day that had passed. From her trip to Jim at the hospital, to the elderly man she had accidentally harmed, to now. It was undoubtedly the oddest day of her life so far.
Rolling onto her side, she fell asleep quickly, consumed by her thoughts and utterly exhausted from the events of the day.

"Don’t mention it" would have been appropriately, but with no call to impress, and no interest thereof, he felt the effort, and deigned to respond with a heavy nasal sigh as he rummaged in the hall closet.
"No."
Because in the last few moments, Jim had resigned himself to giving up his room. A lesson to an only child, raised affectionately and sufficiently by a sensible woman, it had been fixed within the reasonable part of his conscience for the last half hour. Yet the full effect of chivalry had been robbed by disgruntled composure. The day’s experienced perhaps pardoned his irritable weariness.
Jim shuffled to the couch with as much obligation as conciliation with the furniture itself, an acquaintance from the nights in which sleeping in his own bed had been troublesome.
The answer became more defined with the fanning of the sheet and tossing of the pillows before the flicker of the television. Haphazard but sufficient, with a blank expression, Jim rounded the couch toward the hall and fished out another set of sheets. He entered his room and began prying away the week-old dishevelment of navy plaid sheets. He balled them up, quickly, tossed them into the corner by his closet.
The moment requiring more hospitality than he was willing to apply, he threw the folded sheets on top of the mattress.
" ‘s yours. - Don’t go through my stuff." But his conscience - that at the moment seemed to be occupying his liver - injected a pang of guilt for the increase of impertinence. Putting the sheets on was the least he could have done, and Sarah would expect it.
So remorsefully, and tiredly, he did, and when he was finished, sighed, “Night,” and drew the door up behind him.
She wouldn't have minded, sleeping on the couch, though had little to no time to speak up after he'd quickly made the bed before departing the bedroom.

"Yeah," was his husky, low reply, and admittedly, tired.
Sparing no more than a glance, he turned away and into his room, gently cracking the door behind him.
Jim snatched both hoodie and shirt over his head, bunched at the wrist, and cast them to the virtual hamper on the floor, compiled of copious articles varied between clean and mildly dirty. Then made to drop his pants, but paused. Flickering a look to the door, he raised his head and with more force than he intended - SLAM.
He was always quick to change, no more credited to being a male without the compulsion for cosmetics than to his circumstances. Having no outstanding taste, having very little care for fashion, and with nothing much expected of him, an invariable collection of hoodies, jeans, and t-shirts sufficed. Quick to change clothes, never complicated.
Tugging down a shirt from around his ribs, he dragged his feet in drawing toward the set of drawers against the wall, aiming his eyes toward the one ajar and apparently overflowing. Yanking it out made the attached mirror lean forth. He shoved it back, deepening the nick that had already formed in the wall from repetition.
With no singular luck, he found something sufficiently androgynous - a shirt and some spare pajama pants that he new for a fact were clean, if the scent of Tide powder gave any indication. - It was one among the several pairs he’d accrued over the years with the one-track desire for comfort. They were isolated from respective sets, fished out of the thrift bins, that he’d as of yet to outgrow with a physique that was hardly dynamic; and that he’d washed enough times to fully eradicate the moldy stench of hand-me-downs.
Shirt and pants balled in hand, Jim, yanking open his door, emerged, and advanced little in Rachel’s direction. Making only a couple of steps, he stopped just outside his door and leaned against the wall, crossing one ankle over the other and absently watching as she ended her phone call.
"Here."
Before much could be said, Jim tossed the pants by the waistband, the shirt by the collar, toward her, as if a great favor needing no words to be meaningful. - Generous, no doubt, somewhat rude in transmission, he dismissed it more nominally on account of quiet exhaustion.
As soon as she'd ended the phone call with her father, she'd turned to find Jim holding out a change of clothes for her to sleep in. Before she had a chance to even reach out, he'd tossed them at her, carelessly it seemed, to which she made a scrambling attempt to catch them. Clutching the worn material to her chest, she heaved out a weary sigh, "thanks," she mumbled, feeling as if she'd done something to irritate him.
She made her way towards the bathroom, recalling the way from her trip earlier to make him a bath. "I'll... be right back," she said meekly over her shoulder, before opening the door and then closing it behind her. Undoing the buttons and zip on her jeans, she slid them down quickly, leaving them in a pool of denim by her feet. Peeling the pair of cotton pants from the bunched up articles of clothing given to her, she slipped them on, finding them much too big around the hips.
Eyes scouring the contents of the bathroom, she pulled open one of the cupboards beneath the sink, in hopes for a hair tie of some sort. Luckily, Sarah seemed to have a small pile of them beside her small stash of make up and hair products. Taking one, and bunching up the excess waist on the pants, to hold them up, she tied the band around tightly, leaving a small protruding bump of material on the side of her hip. It looked strange, but it did the job of holding them up for her.
Proceeding to remove her shirt, she quickly grabbed the baggy shirt given to her and slipped it on over her head, pulling it down over her stomach. Pulling her hair out from the collar, she then grabbed her clothes, folding them up and hugging them to her chest as she opened the bathroom door and stepped out.
Bare feet patting against the cool flooring, she made her way back into the lounge room. "Thanks for the clothes," she said, her voice a tad louder than earlier, to make herself heard. She gave an appreciate smile, before glancing about the room. "So... am I sleeping on the sofa then?"

Visiting Hours | Jim and Rapunzel
Even in his attempt to block out the conversation (which hadn’t been as successful as he would have liked), it wasn’t lost upon Jim, a lad with a critical eye, that Rachel’s head had been turned in his direction for seconds which seemed prolonged, before wrenching away. And it was hardly lost upon him, the directional, wistful, somewhat teasing expression his mother had cast his way as he skittered between kitchen and bedroom.
Pushing his fists against the hoodie pouch, Jim instinctively quickened his pace - but unconsciously, for in realizing he had inadvertently passed by his companion, he would have broke his walk with a sudden stop, but gradually ceased in his saunter, casually glancing over his shoulder and saw that she was patting and situating the fluffy arrangement the hedge of hair seated on her head.
Dishevelment of this degree in a woman was in general attractive; but Jim, who had never questioned his orientation, and had always born in confidence his natural attraction to the female animal, had, with the irritants of temper and situation, and constipation with his mother, convinced himself that he’d little time to entertain the prospects of a girlfriend. Not entirely for his distinction, but particularly in such a neighborhood, chance and desire were grim, slim.
Yet he took silent watch, and not admiration, quite - but critical, composed study of her figure. His eyes caught the arch of her back, the stretch of her ribs, and casually traced her arch down to the hips where in the angle of her half facing him, he saw a distinct absence of definition. He found then what was to be expected of a suburban sheltered flower - a regulated lifestyle, and though the eagerness of her manners impressed otherwise, Jim conjectured a good probability of tenacity. She had a decided vegetarian figure. Fine as a wishbone - petite, for all intensive purposes, and short enough that she wouldn’t be unevenly proportioned. Even honing on that particular aspect of her small breasts, in easily comparing them to apples - perhaps a little bigger - reminded of the cultural hysterics concerning the matter of size as worth, and still more, yielded in stream of consciousness a more unwelcome thought. That myth of a woman’s girth that Jim had so often heard in relation to the cunt, so industriously chortled over in the huddles of panty-snatchers he passed on the streets - Jim, dragging his fingers down from his eye, dismissed with a sigh of exhaustion, and a subconscious sense of nobility gained through a respect for women.
Old ladies. Snatching her bald. - She was a worry wart. That was cute.
He didn’t move to explain until she seemed near finished.
"Yeah, ‘s fine. N’ no, you don’t. I dunno. They might. - Look, it was a joke…H’ didn’t wanna chance it. You got a lotta hair…Girls around here are jealous uh that shit, ‘kay…”
Not too keen on delving into expounding on the ridiculous concept of ghetto-fabulous, Jim decided that he had watched these proceedings long enough. With a fleeting roll of his eyes and a quiet sigh of impatience, Jim advanced toward her, muttering, “Look, you can take care of that later, it looks fine.”
Taking a raised wrist, he proceeded to pull her down the hall, adding,”I didn’t think you’d wanna tango with the freaks.C’mon, let’s just go.”
If not for the timid confidence of constitution, Jim would have otherwise included himself in the category (and in the house of self-worth, did still).
The compliment to his mother he replied with sufficient vagueness. “Thanks.”
The query as to his state of mind however, went unanswered.
The walk to the fish market was of a twenty-minute duration. The quest for dinner itself went virtually un-harassed by encounter; and was thankfully uneventful, save for the inconvenience of having to wait an additional hour, and the attraction of Rachel’s mop forcing the endurance of looks, and the growing discomfort of close quarters and lack of room - the liberation from which Jim couldn’t help but unleash a cry of once-inhibited agony when they at long last were back outside.
Dinner itself was not entirely awkward. Most of it was passed in a resumption of that discussion which had been interrupted. Jim was hardly dismayed by his position as third-wheel, and ate in silence.
It was a quarter past eight by the time the table was cleared, and Sarah continued to engage her guest. Without the slightest argument, but with a look of assignment, Jim languidly took up the chore of washing dishes from both dinner and the stack of bowls from earlier. No-Face chose the office of keeping his master company and seated himself beside the sink and spectate the notably medium speed by which Jim washed and rinsed the dishes, in succession of glasses, silverware, then china; and the gentleness with which he handled them from scrubbing, rinsing, to rack.
There Jim tarried, buying his mother time, his thoughts divided between thoughts of his own and snippets of their discourse, at times hushed by the quiet roar of Wheel of Fortune.
It was half past when Jim finished. Gripping the edge of the counter, he rested his buttocks against it, then folded his arms over his stomach as he watched. The thought of changing into his sleepwear ever increasing as the minutes eased on, it was not until Sarah excused herself to the bathroom, with every happy assurance of returning, that Jim pushed his weight off the counter, giving it a groan, and approached Rachel, standing before her akimbo. Blocking out the television.
With a nudge of his chin. “Call your dad. - Tell him you’re spending the night,” he mumbled, but presumptuously advised her.
The following few hours had consisted of mainly Sarah and Rachel interacting, the older woman overly friendly, whether compensating for the angry events from earlier on or to keep her guest entertained. Either way, Rachel was content, relieved that Sarah didn’t appear to dislike her, due to those past circumstances.
Once dinner was out of the way, the blonde joined Sarah on the couch, heedlessly watching Wheel of Fortune. The show didn't hold much interest to her, though she tried her best to keep her eyes open. Her parents never really watched shows like this; her father more into sports, her mother… never really watched television, period.
The place was quiet, all a part from the quiet murmurs of the television, and the scrubbing in the kitchen, of Jim doing the dishes. Had she not been so caught up in the previous conversation, she probably would have offered to help.
Crossing a leg over the other, Rachel tilted her head into her hand; the end of her elbow pressed into the soft arm of the couch, her cheek nestled in her palm as she and Sarah watched the television. Pulling her phone out from her handbag, she took note of the time, surprised to find that it wasn't that late, not as late as she thought. Had she stuck to the original plan from earlier, she would’ve been home by now – her parents must be worried. Though, she hadn't received a flood of texts or calls. Maybe they weren't that worried.
Once her line of sight was blocked by a figure, she came to realise just how lost in thought she had been, not having noticed Sarah getting up and going to the bathroom. Leaning her head further to see the screen subconsciously, she exhaled before lifting her gaze up at Jim, who was looking rather tired himself.
At his request—or rather, demand-- the faint smile on her face had faded as she pushed herself up from her slouched position, sitting up straight. “What? Sleeping here? Why--” she began, looking down at her phone again. It was getting late. And as Jim had so thoroughly explained before, it was not a good neighbourhood for her to be wandering home in the dark, or catching public transportation alone. He looked too tired to take her home, Sarah would have been exhausted from work, and if she told her parents where she was, to be picked up, she would undoubtedly be grounded for the next month or possibly longer.
They really didn’t seem to like Jim, unbeknownst to her as to why.
“Um… okay,” she replied meekly, and without further protest. She was hesitant for a moment, before gently punching in her father’s phone number on the key pad. Standing up, she sidled past Jim and wandered over to the window, subconsciously chewing on her index fingernail out of nervousness, her gaze on the television screen as she waited for an answer.
"..."
Ringing... ringing...
“Hello?”
Tearing her eyes from the screen, she turned to face the window, clearing her throat. “Hi, dad! Um, just… sorry for calling so late, I um… I’m sleeping over a friend’s house tonight, i-is that okay?” she asked. It would have to be okay. She hoped it would be.
“Oh,” he replied, “whose house?”
Paling slightly, she quickly wracked her brain, just glad that he wasn't here to see her ever changing expressions. “Uh—Ariel’s,” she bit her lip. Lottie's. LOTTIE'S. Why didn't you say Lottie's?
"I thought you were at Charlotte's house?"
“I-I was... but um... Ariel invited me over when I was at her house… so,” with a shrug, she looked down at her feet, her voice a murmur.
“All right then,” he replied, unsurely. “If you need anything, give us a ring. Good night, Rachel.”
“Night, dad,” she replied gently, smiling before hanging up the phone.
Hovering on the spot for a moment, she held onto her phone, pulling her fingers away from her lips. With a sigh, she turned to Jim, a look of discomfort upon her face. She didn't like lying to her parents. “I don’t… I don’t have any spare clothes… or toiletries or anything with me,” she said, glancing at him. Where was she supposed to sleep? Her eyes drew to the couch, as she held her hands in front of her.
The aspect of a sleepover was usually something fun, though in this case she was almost certain hers and his definitions of sleep overs were quite different. Not knowing what to expect, made her nervous. Worried, even.
This was going to be an interesting night.
