Bookie urges the government to ban FOBT’s - A Report
Bookie calls for a ban on the ‘cracked cocaine’ of gambling for the first time. Yes folks, that’s exactly what happened just about a week back when a bookie who obviously earns his living by accepting bets demanded the ban of the fixed odds betting terminal (FOBT), (his bread and butter) after a punter reportedly hung himself, and another customer attempted suicide.
Mike Simmons, 53, who has his own shop near Birmingham with a turnover of £1million a year told the Sunday People that the FOBT’s are so bad that the only thing they generally do is kill! In fact, research shows that though these luck based machines pay out huge amount to those lucky, the problem lies in the fact that the chances of one getting lucky here is a mere 10% if not less.
What Mr. Simons did is a milestone in itself as he is the first bookie to have spoken up against these killer machies, knowing fully well that if they are banned, the entire gambling world would be hit greatly.
Mr Simon also feels that the only way addiction to these machines can be warded off is by banning them. In other words it need to be across the board, enforced by the government for the ban to work. Mike himself had lost £1,000 to these machines inspite of knowing fully about the addiction that one may get sucked into through these.
The British tabloid, ‘The Sunday People’, after Mr Mike’s verbal innitiation to urge the government to ban these FOBT’s has started a campaign as well against these. They are campaigning for a £2 maximum stake on these machines if the government decides against not banning these machines. ‘The Sunday People’ in this way is trying to reduce the amount punters put at stake on these fixed odds betting terminals as these machines can take up to £100 of a punter’s cash within 20 seconds! In fact a research by the ‘Campaign for Fairer Gambling’ had put forward reports which showed that 80% of the punters agree to have pend more on them than they intended on these machines as compared to any other gambling vertical.
