Tory MP lashes out at the Labour Party’s criticism of their beer and bingo advert
The advert on beer and bingo which had been the subject of much controversy over the past week as the Labour party and the Liberal Democrats criticized it to be patronizing had the Torries lash out in retort. Grant Shapps chairman of the conservative party launched a scathing attack on Ed Miliband the Leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition and stated that Miliband with his comments against the advert has in fact resorted to not only class divide but has also tried to divide the nation instead of lending a helping hand to tackle more serious issues faced by the Britons.
The entire issue began when the chairman Mr. Shapps who was part of the 1000 mile budget tour for the year 2014 posted a message on Twitter where he applauded Chancellor George Osborne’s decision to cut Bingo Tax and Beer Duty ” and then posted the newest advert on the same which had a tagline “to help hardworking people do more of the things they enjoy.” This advert was basically created to convey the details of the budget though the digital media and thus posted on the social networking sites so that it could reach the masses. But because it was stated to be patronizing and also that it took away the seriousness from a thing like the budget. In fact shadow health minister Andy Burnham said the advert bore a resemblance to a Harry Enfield sketch about the 1930s.
Initially Mr. Shapps was perplexed over such a hue and cry over something which he dubbed as being “harmless” but later stated that he was quiet annoyed with the reaction of both the Labour party and the Liberal Democrats and also stated that it was quiet unprofessional and un-political for the Labour party to state that he did not understand the needs and wants of the common man and that he was “out of touch” with everyday people.
Mr. Shapps also gave explanations for the reduction of beer duty by just a pound and said that though this one pound may seem trivial and that initial calculations would show as that it would take a hundred pints to save a pound but larger calculation show that in a pub where thousands of pints are consumed thus thousands of pounds would also be saved and this in turn would in fact save a pub from closing down. He also added that the halving of the taxes for bingo has also saved many dwindling bingo halls. As a retort to the Labour Party which stated that Mr. Shapps and his party did not understand the needs of the common man he said that beer and bingo in fact brings people together and people socialize over these and hence tax reduction on these actually would help them a great deal. Lastly he also added that the Labour Party in fact has nothing constructive to say and thus they simply found a lame reason to create a row!
