While South Central is widely depicted as one more inner-city in economic collapse, a look at life in South Central suggests a community on the economic rise with resurgent community associations and churches helping to bring back businesses to neglected neighborhoods. Instead of growing poverty and hopelessness, data reveal neighborhoods are experiencing moderate poverty rates amid growing investment. KHARINA X FREEDA PEOPLE
Meet Cuban-Mexican American- Kharina Ojeda, who navigates through the world as a latinx model and criminal justice major with style and grace. Having modeled for runway as well as other latinx designers, she puts an equal amount of focus on her craft as well as her studies, developing an open-ended style that leaves room for all sorts of growth.
“Growing up I had it very easy. My mother was born here, but my dad was born in Mexico. He’s very educated, a USC graduate so college was mandatory for my siblings and I. Going into college as a chemistry major with the hopes of being a plastic surgeon was my dream. I decided to change my major half way through my freshman year because there was a lot going on in the world that I felt so helpless about. My goal as a criminal justice major now is to educate myself on the world and be able to identify specific problems. I would like to become a police officer to help my community not be so scared of the police. As an officer I can’t change the system that’s already broken, but I can try. In order to see change you must be it, I feel as if I can try to change the stereotypes of cops maybe our minority communities wouldn’t be so fearful in their own cities, it would be a step towards a loving world.” - Kharina Ojeda
Based on her sense of direction and commitment to innovation just in the past few years, I’m excited to see where she takes her style, and her eagerness for a change in how we as a community see policing.

KEKE X FREEDA PEOPLE
I had the pleasure of meeting and styling model/dancer Keke Marito, it was one of those connections were you feel you’ve known them for so long. Her smile and energy was contagious and conversations just flowed. We talked about everything from what aspires her, what she’s been up to and the current political climate of her homeland - Philippines.
Who is Keke? Her real name is Khaytelynn Love Marito. Many know her as Keke. Keke is like her alter ego, she is fierce, serves looks, and is just an overall boss ass b. Khaytelynn, is a shy girl and doesn’t really like getting out of her comfort zone. Keke came about when she joined her first competitive hip hop dance team in the 8th grade, and evolved as she continued to dance. Dance has been a very big part of her life and has helped her through a lot, shaping the person she is today. Dance has helped her express emotions that she cannot say out loud.
She is a big family person. She has 4 siblings: one older full brother and three half siblings who are half Filipino and Guatemalan. Although she is not Guatemalan, she was raised in both cultures.
“My mother has 10 siblings; eight brothers and two sisters. Having such a big family has played a big role in my life. Having parties and gatherings made us all so close. Family will always be something that will motivate me throughout life. I always do what I love for myself, but my hustle will always be for my family, because in a family we take care of one another.” Keke M.

POP-UP + LAUNCH PARTY 1-18-19
The Milk Shake’s first ever official Launch Party on Friday, January 18 at The Mayfair Hotel was a great night to be apart of. Thanks to founder Carlos Guiaco for organizing a unique Los Angeles experience. I connected with so many unique artists and musicians from South Central, Boyle Heights and Pasadena. Some which, and I might be saying too much right now- but there will be exciting collaborations coming up soon! These are my favorite types of events to be apart of, ones where we can share and help expand our visions as creators. So much good energy.
It was great catching up with my analog lovin’ hermanos y hermanas at Introverted Funk. If you haven’t had the chance to see them live yet, say no mas- they have back to back shows for the month of February, follow their instagram for show dates @IntrovertedFunk.
Behind the lens that night was LA based photographer, Jessica (yesica) Magaña creator of Red HeartMedia. Her work is versatile varying from documentary, portraiture, music and special occasions, as she does not like to conform to one type of style. Her passion is to continue capturing people, stories, places, cultures, and musical performances throughout her life.

Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monk Analog Spark – RZR-39828-01, Atlantic – 1278 Vinyl LP, 180g 1958 (2016 reissue)
Saw this in the VMP shop last month, immediately scooped it. Although it’s been reissue many times, I’d yet to ever come across a copy in the wild and was curious to know more about the quality and sound of Analog Spark pressings. As promised, it’s a dynamic sounding record with a wide sound stage . In other words, no need for me to keep checking through Discogs for an original. This one’s a keeper which succeeds in satisfying the audiophile itch that Analog Spark caters to. Blakey and Monk currently sound like they’re performing right in front of me. Closed eyelids + imagination = a vivid performance for happy jazz ears. Bombay Sapphire martini please, extra splash of vermouth, shaken, two olives.
