you know something that I noticed about Dani and Jamie’s relationship? it was given to us in the same way that TV so often gives straight romances: love, in its entirety.

I didn’t have to spend the whole time worrying about them being broken up by the restraints of homophobia, none of the other characters reacted at all when they got together — there was still that unfamiliarity that comes with gay relationships, the whole ‘is she gay?’ struggle that is a part of being in the minority — but other than that, it was just two women, falling for each other.

Because when show creators introduce the idea of ‘their relationship’s main struggle is the fact that they’re gay’ — without meaning to they actually end up adding to the stigma of homosexuality being this abnormal thing which is too difficult to uphold in a healthy, stable way. Which is why representation like this show gave us is SO important. No toxicity, no over-sexualisation, no hardships other than the obvious problem of the lady in the lake which is actually fundamentally connected to the storyline, rather than some unrelated subplot about the struggles of being a homosexual.

Yes, their ending was a devastating one, but the fact that they lived such beautiful lives up until then in literally THE healthiest relationship I have ever seen on TV is... indescribable. There will always, always be a place in my heart for this show.

(too long; didn’t read) Dani and Jamie’s story wasn’t about being gay, it was about being in love. Beautiful, eternal, completely non-toxic, love. We won, guys. We finally won.

I think what makes Dani and Jamie’s relationship so endearing to me is that it’s the classic pairing of The Bubbly, Sunshine One and The Dark, Broody One but with a twist. Because at first glance, based purely on outward appearances, Dani is the Sunshine One and Jamie is the Dark One.

Dani tries to present as this happy, innocent, nurturing teacher who is great with little kids and wears lots of bright, feminine colors. Meanwhile Jamie presents outwardly as mysterious and dark and hates everyone and doesnt care.

Yet in reality, on the inside, Dani is the one who is really struggling, and dealing with so much dark shit, and is slowly falling apart.

Whereas Jamie is secretly very sunny and happy later on.

Especially in the proposal scene, and really anytime she’s with Dani. Jamie becomes so giggly and bubbly and HAPPY.

Jamie, who claims to not care about people, and doesn’t want to let people in and get hurt, becomes so gentle, nurturing, and sweet.

Fangirlish: Why are LGBTQ stories like the one of Jamie and Dani so important to see in this day and age?

Amelia: I think it’s so rare that you see a same sex relationship displayed that isn’t overly sexualized. I think it’s so rare to see a female/female relationship that is created for females. They tend to be created for the male gaze. And entertain some type of person. And it felt like with this story, it was for them, the female gaze. I think the way that I approached it, and I think the way that Victoria approached it too, is that they were just in love. They were two people in love. It wasn’t that they were two women necessarily. That really didn’t play a factor in it. They were just two people that fell in love with one another. And I think that is kind of, I hadn’t realized it at the time in complete honesty, how rare that is to find on screen. We did that quite naturally because I think that’s how we both feel about love and life. To see how much of an impact it’s made, it’s incredible. So, yeah. I think it’s really important for people to know it doesn’t have to be for anybody else’s entertainment. You love who you love, for you.
