*flint voice* our golden age of piracy is collapsing
the Max and Silver parallels are so good but my favorite one is maybe how both of them betray the ones they love for their own selfish ends and Max atones and Silver doesn't. Max takes care of Anne, she tells her "there is nothing important that does not include you" (a romantic line of all time btw), she finds a way to build a life where - at least for the time being - she can hold onto what she has built and have Anne (and Jack) at her side. Meanwhile Silver chooses the wrong thing and he's like "I was right though. I was literally right. Madi and Flint, someday you're going to realize how literally right I was and all shall be forgiven and it will all be perfect because I was, and I can't emphasize this enough, literally right." (We all know how well that goes for him.) And I do think it matters very much that Max is a formerly enslaved black woman and longtime sex worker who fully appreciates how it feels to be on the wrong side of that choice. Meanwhile Silver is a white guy who - while clearly having a traumatic upbringing and coded as being "othered" in English society due to his unspecified background - is living in a world where men get to make decisions for women and their societal "inferiors." I'm not being very eloquent I just think it's so neat to be like this repressed queer white guy has betrayed and destroyed himself, his black wife, and his openly queer (to him) bestboyfriend for nothing but he tells himself it's okay because he was literally right
to be clear I'm not condoning Max's betrayal of Anne. All of these characters are constantly betraying each other on deeply personal levels, ways that violate their loved one's physical and mental autonomy, just for a scrap of control. I just think that betrayals coming from Rogers are different from Eleanor are different from Silver are different from Max. (Hell Mr. Scott betrays Eleanor on a personal level. We know why and the good reasoning behind it, but *to her*, it's a fundamental violation.) Black Sails is a show about how We Live In A Society and who is doing the betraying and why they are doing it is very very very important. It's all a story. Betrayal betrayal fruit fruit tits tits
LOL OKAY SO....maybe I shouldn't say this and it's just like....salt in the wound for them but...having now seen both shows...that bonnet vs flint poll from 3 years ago is EXTRA HYSTERICAL
i know lots of things about black sails were sort of worked out as it went along but it's awesome how much you can see everyone's entire character arcs in like the first few episodes. silver is introduced as a coward and a (literal) backstabber. flint can fight and scheme his way out of anything but collapses when he gets to his gay and bourgeois house. max wants the safety and stability she thinks money can give her but chooses to jeopardize it for love. eleanor is unable to stop fighting even when running is the only thing that could save her. they're so different from the people they are at the end of s4 but so entirely the same
"what if they fucked" WRONG. what if they ruined each other's lives irreparably. what if there was nothing left but a smoldering heap. what if everything that brought them together twisted and corroded and ripped them apart. and then they fucked.
2026 is the year toby stephens wins an emmy for james flint, i can feel it in my bones
happy pride to the phrase "something else" specifically
