Is it not an incredible gift to obtain joy merely from the sight or sound of someone?
There is no peace away from home.
As someone put it yesterday, “This is a new start for you and us. Please have patience and take time to understand us, for if you don’t, you will be quick to judge us, and there will not be enough time left to love us.”
Life Lessons in Faith
Most people are inherently filled with goodness, but each unique in their positives and their flaws. It is hard to imagine one of a good nature wanting to take advantage of another, and it is probably not the case. People, of course, try and use family or friends for many things, but what I mean is that no good person would willingly try to take advantage of another in a way that harms the other and only benefits the self. Within the context of this, it is the hardest thing to see misunderstanding between two people. We are more optimistic in youth, perhaps more easily trusting. Somehow, it appears that along the path of life, people may become more cynical of others’ intentions. While we want the good for others, we are not without selfish tendencies. Relationships are so complex. Obedience, loyalty, love, respect - everyone seems to have slightly unique glasses with which to view these. Ego is the root of all evil. When ego is touched, often due to misunderstanding or certain things not going according to expectations, it brings out the selfishness in us, and with that, a stress is created with a target we choose to exert our selfishness on, usually on someone close. The nature of relationships dictate that thoughts are often clouded under pressure, and the sage advice one may give others they cannot follow themselves under such circumstances. One act of selfishness creates another in the person affected, and that person in turn is selfish to another. Like dominoes, a chain of people are affected. One misunderstanding creates another, and another person becomes cynical along the way. Another person loses the inherent trust they have in others.
We like to think that we are unselfish, but when tested, we all often bend or crack under pressure, and we cannot but blame the issues we face immediately on others rather than a situation created by misunderstanding or different information with different people. We cannot see the test from God and allow our selfishness to take control of our interactions. We do not become disillusioned, but rather we are illusioned into thinking that others may not be considering for us as we are considering for them.
Things ebb and flow. Sometimes we are severely tested, and sometimes we are at ease. Who really knows how we do under such tests given each person is so unique? None of us do. We will probably see how each person acted under each circumstance, and given each person’s personal benchmark, they will judge how each acted under the circumstances. There are ideal ways to act under situations, but not all of us will, and not all of the time, act in the ideal manner. We are human and err. There is, however, something we can all take once the situation passes - what we learn, and most often, we learn that things stem simply from misunderstanding. Had we had more patience and faith, we would see the true intentions of the others, the limitations they face and their personal circumstances. And perhaps we will find that people acted selfishly, but at the very least we will know why they were driven to it, and how to help them out of it. What is our loss is that we give up on patience too quickly, on understanding too quickly, on trust too quickly. The tests in this world are designed to make us lose these, and we repeatedly fail, and the world becomes more and more selfish.
There is so much strife, misunderstanding, between good people everywhere. It doesn’t have to stay that way. It takes one person to hold on to patience, trust and understanding, and perhaps others will eventually see and follow. Perhaps people will learn to forgive each other, and accept the improved nature of each other. Perhaps something much more beautiful will grow out of it than if these struggles had never been.
There is also something else we can learn from such things, and that is to not overreact when seeing a loved one distressed. It is in our nature to be drawn to their side and see a blurred version of right and wrong. What was exemplified by great people in the past is to stay calm under such circumstances until the storm can pass, for everyone sees a little more clearly and thinks a little more calmly once it passes. Overreacting during the storm may not leave room to be able to do anything after. We will be lucky to survive a few storms, but we must learn quickly, or be carried away.
I will remember these lessons, always.
So much of my childhood.
It is easier to trust in a visible mirage than an invisible truth.
For what we are worth
Is what we are blessed with determinant of our worth in the eyes of others?
I have been blessed with much in this life, alhamdulillah. Most recently, I received the opportunity to pursue doctoral studies in one of the most prestigious research institutions in my field. There is, of course, an element of effort of to achieving this, but it is dwarfed by all the blessings from God that have been afforded to make this a reality.
While I am elated to have this opportunity, there is a nagging annoyance at how highly our society values such a path of education or career. It would not be irksome, except that the valuation is at the expense of other career choices. We are not all programmed to function in the same way. Due to certain characteristics and social realities, I am able to pursue this, but others may not be. Similarly, others are able to pursue things I am not. In the end, our value should be based on, within our own choices, how well we are able to service society and humanity in the path of God. However, it is now based on the status or prestige that comes with labels. I could obtain a PhD and conduct extensive research that promotes the worst in this world, and I could ignore all my other responsibilities - there is no value in that; in fact, it is of negative value. Why then should a PhD by itself hold higher value than other professions where on a daily, even hourly, basis, people actively serve others? Why are their efforts and sacrifices not worth more?
A pay-scale or knowledge difference does not measure our worth. It is how much we do with the little we have that does.
Not one of us are without flaw, that goes without saying. However, I have often observed a tendency for people to portray, "This is how I am, deal with it or tough luck." While individual quirks or differences in thinking make each of us different, we should not completely accept who we are, for that is to reject growth of character. The only way we can grow in that aspect is to know that we could be wrong anywhere, and to have the humility to learn of our character flaws or clouded thinking from any source, and to really detach ourselves from our social setting and evaluate right and wrong in the face of criticism. If we cannot take criticism or if we cannot detach ourselves from what has shaped us, we will always be in a box where people see all the flaws from the outside, but we are blind to those and see only a mirage of good reflected on all walls on the inside.
You and I - I sometimes wonder how different we are in our personalities, yet we share much of the same fundamentals.
There is no doubt that everyone is tested with what they truly care for. Even amongst the best of human beings, there have been disagreements. We are but human, and we err. As much as we try, we will inevitably commit small errors, or sometimes even without committing errors, different perceptions will lead to misunderstanding. This is a part of life.
What defines the best of friends, the best of companions? It is not in the sharing of similar interests or experiencing together one temporary high after another. It is defined rather by understanding, compassion, patience and comfort. To be understanding and compassionate and patient with each other through peace and through struggle, through joy and through distress, through bonding and through misunderstanding, and, to always, through everything, find comfort in each other and in the surety of inseparability from each other. Through wilds and valleys, and rough terrains and gentle waves - an unbreakable trust in the honesty of the ultimate care for the joint rather than the individual is what defines you and I.
We are individuals, and there is no changing that, but we are also one, always, and there is no changing that.
Now we are free - goosebumps, every time.
Love knew no boundaries, but for what your selfishness and ego set.
We lose some valuable things with age and experience, among them being the belief in good intentions of others. We become so skeptical, that even good seems layered with hidden selfish intentions. Not everything that comes with age and experience is good, nor correct.
If you are aiming for great things, you will have moments of great doubt. Chin up.
We all chase in such different directions, but ultimately our destination is one. May Allah give ease to those who have passed through the struggle of death.
And remember that you evaluate others by their actions while yourself by your intentions.
People think they have their own thought out opinions, that they do not necessarily follow authority. They are in a false illusion. Governments in developed countries are more sophisticated in making the public follow their authority through indirect means in the form of diverting their attention away from injustices at home or creating other more pressing situations that distract people from the more important long-term issues. And most of the opinions people have are fed to them through the media or careful opinion planting among groups that drive hive mentality and from the need to be accepted in a group and not appear deviant. In the end, that you have freedom of thought is an illusion.
Truth is, I could write letters, and poems, and novels, or I could recite poetry, sing songs, and give speeches, all to try and formulate into language how you are and how I feel for you. Truth is, language has yet not been developed to convey such, and no one else will ever know in entirety what this is. Truth is, it doesn't matter as long as you know, and if you do not already, you will, for you are my language of love and I, the medium for you to see it.
