Loki has been your best friend for years. You've stuck by his side through everything and defended him when no one else would. And you keep him centered. The two of you work perfectly together and balance each other out.
You have always seen Loki as your best friend. Since the day you met as children, Loki has been the one you go to for everything and vice versa. You have been attached at the hip since then and when you see one, the other is always close by.
However, your view of Loki and your relationship began to change when it was announced he is engaged and set to marry a very kind woman of royalty. Odin said something about upholding the line of royalty and reputation. You weren't really listening. You were too distracted and busy forcing the smile on your face so that no one could tell what you were really thinking in that moment.
Tonight is the night of Loki's engagement celebration and you have spent the whole day preparing yourself to face him and his family. You have no idea if this is what Loki really wants, but you are going to support him anyway.
You walk into the glorious ballroom, your heart pounding. You keep telling yourself that you just need to get through the party and if possible, avoid Loki for as much of the night as you can. It shouldn't be that hard given how busy he already is socializing.
Across the room, you spot the bar and head straight for it, immediately getting started on the drinking. It's what you needed. You plan to spend most of the night constantly having a drink in your hand.
And after about an hour and a half into the party, your plan has been working great. However, now you're drunk and Loki has finally found some free time to approach you.
"(Y/N)!" He greets, his arms wrapping you in a tight hug, his fingertips brushing the exposed skin of your back.
"Loki... hi." You smile, closing your eyes briefly and taking in his scent.
He steps back, his hands remaining on your shoulders. A smile graces his face and you feel your heart flutter. You were finally coming to the realization that maybe it wasn't just a friendly love you felt for the god. Maybe it was a romantic love. Despite how much that freaked you out, you also began to think about how you wished this party was for the two of you instead.
"Can I steal you for a dance?" He asks, one of his hands sliding down to grab yours.
"You can steal me for much more than that." You reply quietly.
With a smile Loki leads you to the dance floor, one of his hands landing on your waist to pull you closer. Your heart beats insanely fast as you look up at him, his eyes on yours the entire time.
"Are you alright?" Loki asks through a whisper.
You only nod, your eyes flicking down to his lips before landing on the blue eyes that seemed to be staring into your soul.
"Yes, darling?" He asks in that voice that just makes you melt.
"I must admit it... I would marry you in an instant. Damn your wife, I'd be your mistress. Just to have you around...."
You've stopped dancing and Loki looks down at you, his hand still on your waist as the other tucks your hair behind your ear.
You swallow and take a deep breath, looking up at him as you wait for him to give you something more.
"I could never subject you to being my mistress."
Your drunken mind can't comprehend what he means by that, so you look up at him with furrowed eyebrows, your head tilted slightly.
"And you can't be my mistress...." He continues, taking a short pause, looking around, "My father has arranged this for me. I need to marry and I can't be caught with a mistress."
You take a step back from him, forcing his hands off of you.
"So now you're picking a random woman you've known for all of two months over the one who has been there for you for years? I know it isn't exactly fair of me to spring this on you now, but it is not my fault you were blind to the way I have loved you before."
You turn, tears pricking your eyes as you quickly make your way towards the door, ignoring Loki's calls after you. You push the heavy doors open and walk through the corridor, your heels clicking on the marble.
You wipe at your eyes, trying to ignoring the pain in your chest when you feel a hand on your shoulder, spinning you around. Your eyes land on Loki and you furrow your eyebrows in confusion.
"What, Loki? Are you here to rub it in my face that I was too late? Too late for the love of my life and now I have to watch him marry another? Because I think that's punishment enough."
You turn to walk away again, but Loki grabs your wrist and pulls you back to him. He doesn't say anything. Instead he cups your face in both of his hands and pulls you into a kiss.
His lips are soft against yours and you grip the sides of his shirt as you kiss him back. You had imagined this moment for the longest time. You can't bear the thought of letting him go, but you do. You pull away from him, a few tears rolling down your cheeks. Loki looks at you, a confused look on his face as he wipes the tears off of your face.
"Because this is just cruel, Loki! Why would you do this? You are supposed to be in there, celebrating your engagement. You made it clear that is what you want. Not me."
"No. You misunderstood me. I can't have you as my mistress. I can't because I want you as my wife. I told everyone in there the wedding is off and I want to marry you. You said you would in an instant and I have never felt such joy before."
You stare at him, your vision blurring with tears once again.
"Why would you do that?" You ask through the lump in your throat.
"Did you not hear what I just said, (Y/N)? I love you and I want to marry you! That's why!" He responds, grabbing your shoulders.
Without another word you grab the god's face in your hands and press your lips to his. You had no idea this is how the night would go, but nothing made you happier than Loki's touch and the way his lips felt against yours.
