‘Lavender Disaster’ is based on a 1953 newswire photograph of the electric chair at Sing Sing prison, Ossining, New York. It was taken just before the highly publicised executions of Julius and Ethel Rosenburg, who, during the anticommunist fervour of McCarthyism, were sentenced to death for passing military secrets to the Soviet Union. For Warhol the image likely evoked the debates about the ethics of capital punishment that were in the news at the time. The work may have also held a more coded reference: the persecution of communists was intertwined with the ‘lavender scare’, a U.S. government crackdown on gay civil servants.
