these past weeks I've been actually thinking a lot of how it would have been if instead of the eagle carrying him to Olympus suddenly, the rape of Ganymede occurred like it's depicted in the ceramics, with all the courtship rituals and Zeus himself, in his man form, taking him.

At least the most identifiable scenes would be Zeus giving him gifts and holding him as in kidnapping him. So I imagine it would have been a process of a couple of days while convincing Ganymede to accept his gifts, without knowing the real intentions behind.

I think it could also open more scenarios for portraying Ancient Greek pederasty but also Ganymede's feelings coming back to his home and to his family knowing that whatever is happening is wrong, but not bringing himself to tell because he doesn't want them to be mad or punish him. He becomes notably uninterested in things, avoiding affection from his parents right after being with him, and just becoming distant, while his family is unaware of the situation.

That. and when Ganymede is finally taking away, all people can tell is that the last time they saw him, he was sitting on the lap of a man they didn't recognize.

today was one of those days where i spent my afternoon looking up ganymede related things on the interweb and i found this painting. Its the painting of a ceiling at Villa Corsini, in Mezzomonte, and by Giovanni Mannozzi. Painting i have never seen before but on the website i got it from.

It's not only beautiful and interesting to look at, but also the whole image is so different from the usual depictions of Ganymede. Instead of being raped, it's his ascension to Olympus. It includes Hebe too. The scenario is pretty obvious. Ganymede is her replacement, he is favored by Zeus over his daughter, helped by him and the eagle to reach him properly. Hebe's cope is spilling, but the putto is bringing Ganymede to the amphora for his labor.

I think it's notable how young Ganymede looks. Most paintings of him depict him leaning more to a young, muscular man, I would assume in his early twenties, but here he looks so small, his torso is the same large as Zeus' lower leg, his hand covers his forearm almost entirely.

It breaks me as I'm writing this, I could assume by the position of Zeus that he's lifting him to keep him closer to him. Besides pointing at Hebe falling, like remarking on her fall as a justification for her replacement. Hebe is also considerably uncovered, and if I remember right, there is a version of her myth where she was destitute from her cupbearer role after her clothes fell off while serving ambrosia, exposing her and therefore humiliating her in front of Olympus.

I love how helpless reading the Iliad makes you feel. Everything has been prophesied. It's not only you who knows this, the characters know too. Achilles knows he will die, yet abstains from battle as if it will do anything to persuade fate. The Trojans know they will lose, they still fight with aggression. Everyone will hurl themselves into written fates they have already read. They do it anyway, and if you were there, you would too. To be human is to disregard fate. To be human is to ignore odds. To be human is to be irrational. To be human is to be Achilles, hiding from battle although you know you will die. To be human is to be a Trojan, fighting although you know your city will fall. To be human is always, always to fall.

The Iliad ends with a funeral.

I need to project a little bit before I keep crying but I began to think about making an au/story where Zeus allowed Ganymede to visit Troy for a day during the war, accompanied by him of course. Ganymede stays in the palace of King Priam and goes unnoticed as a servant, taking a look to see how the people felt regarding all that was happening at troy.

He leaves feeling very sick, I imagine him interacting with Hector and crying over how much people have died to that point and knowing that there is not much chance that Troy will survive all of that, interacting with Paris and Helen and just feeling disturbed about Paris attitude and perhaps projecting his own rape to the one of Helen, and having conflicted feelings about it.

Zeus is looking at him through the windows, in his eagle form maybe, don't ask me how he doesn't get noticed, but at the end of the day he takes Ganymede back to Olympus the same way hé did so the first time, just now Ganymede holds on better to his body and asks him to be more careful
