“My submission to Bustle Mag, for the theme ‘Restless Movement’;

I have been living and working abroad for almost 2 years now, first in Berlin and now in Amsterdam. I always assumed that the longer I stayed in one place, that the feeling of 'belonging' would appear gradually over time. But surprisingly, for months I had discovered the opposite - as each month passed in Amsterdam, my feeling of 'itchy feet' got stronger and stronger. I spent so many evenings trawling through LinkedIn looking at jobs in Barcelona, Argentina, South Africa... and when that didn't work out I turned to researching Masters programs, somewhere, anywhere new in the world. And at some point, I had to question my motivation for moving onto the next place, and what that next place would bring to me. Was it the weather? New opportunities? The language? For some reason, when I began to question this, it was like my eyes had been opened. I started to look at the friends I had made here so far and feel so much warmth towards them and pride that I had created such wonderful, genuine friendships with people from all over the world. I started to appreciate on my daily bike rides to and from work that I knew the paths so well I now didn't need to touch Google Maps. I paused when paying for my groceries to realise I had finally reached a point where I wasn't quivering with fear in the queue about apologising to the cashier that I couldn't speak Dutch, and gave her a big smile. So much of that feeling of 'belonging' somewhere comes from inside, and it's taken me so long to realise that.” - Biscuit

It's inspired by my childhood bedroom, and all the memories that have lived inside there in my mind for so long.
