I’m Vinny! He/They. This is my tf2 sideblog and I follow from @bearloonz
I indulge way too much in my tf2 ocs! I will talk about them a lot, that’s a promise!
tag list:
#my art!! - art tag
#ottos blu team - tag for my BLU merc designs
#ottos fem fortress- tag for my fem fortress designs (previously “fem fortress but they’re separate characters from their merc counterparts,” simplified to be. Much less of a mouthful.)
#tf2 ocs - general tag where you’ll find posts in both of the tags above
#the clown speaks - posts for all of my exceedingly long rants about tf2 characters or something. (A wip, I’m gonna try and retroactively tag all my older posts)
asks - very minimalist ask tag
tf2 tag is a catch all for anything of substance I post on here and all the tf2 characters (generally) have their own name tags. Easy peasy
they hired me to be this old woman's attorney for today:
I am a parda (i.e., half black) person. With that being said, the first time i read about Demoman’s lore i had mixed feelings. For one side I thought “this makes a lot of sense to me”. The other, shyer and hidden, thought “something here doesn’t add up.”
Being straightforward, the aspect of “Demoman got abandoned, adopted, orphaned again and readopted by his og family” bothered me in a way I didn't understand. At first i thought i was being just petty, mayyybe even on a internalized racism realm — black people’s trajectories are multifaceted, to only wish to engage with the “wholesome” ones is to ignore multiple experiences and the historical conditions that led to so. Without any vocabulary to explain why i felt like that, i choosed to not mention it at all, wait until my mind change about it. It did not changed, what happened is that i finally understood what my point was. It’s not the story, it’s what we interpreted of it.
An recurring theme in many black people's experiences is the over effort vs under appreciation. To super perform on something to get the recognition a white person doing average would get — or to get recognition at all. As far i know, most of the tf2 comic writters are white (pls correct me if in wrong), and yet, the Demoman's comics, for me, manage to grasp this experience aspect. Over performance to manage basic survival, and to teach survival will only be achieved by over performance. And it also shows how this pressure has negative consequences over someone, despite being born with good intentions.
(Like being hurt at a young age, or spiralling after a defeat — Or having to listen unfair mom complains 😭)
It is something that can be talked about and overcomed together, however — to depend each case to case. and i really dont see anything denying this is what happened between demoman and his mom, despise the very few we see from them in the end
So like. What is the “abandonment” lore bit fulfills in this story? This generational trauma aspect sucks, as i just mentioned, but, heartbreaking and paradoxically, it is something born in love, born in a wish to protect your kids. So why to say “they didn’t wanted him actually but then they saw he was actually good with bombs and changed their mind”
(AND ITS NOT MENTIONED IN THE COMICS AT ALL IS THE THING, THE WHOLE THING CONNECTING THOSE TWO IS THE TIMELINE NOT OVERLAPING WITHOUT ANY OF THESE INFORMATIONS MAKING A BRIDGE AT ANY POINT. IT COULD JUST NOT EXIST)
My epiphany?
We, as a tf2 community, might have gotten past this image way too fast
Think with me, the cartoony difficulties bringed by demoman’s mother. Add those to the subtext, sadder irl difficulties — The racism, a cataclysm into every situation in society, and the fact that both demoman’s parents are disabled.
You could bomb mercs all day and still not have enough for a loaf of bread.
Think with me. Demoman was put in an orphanage not because his parents didn’t want him. His parents wanted more for him. They didn’t want him to grow in poverty, in awful conditions.
But even miles away from them, Tavish still clinged into explosive-making — Their heritage, their culture. Emotions came, “We can’t left him behind. We can’t left our own behind, no matter what.” A monumental effort was made, but they managed to bring him again. They are together again, they can be happy together again.
If they get without money, they can’t raise Tavish. So Tavish’s mother takes action. Her, and her husband, are going to teach the family business to him. He will get a job. He will get ever single job from earth if needed, because if the family doesn't have money, they can’t be together. And by god, Tavish’s mother will not give up on her son again.
Time passes, they discuss with each other. She did made Tavish be successful in his live, but he had to grow up too fast. Had to bare a burden too big for his own, for anyone. She is sorry, she is so sorry. Tavish only deserved the best, she trought that it was the only way to so. Things dont need to be like that anymore.
They're together. They're happy. They are a family.
Alright team, here's a recap: This is a contest to determine who amongst you will take the top of the leaderboards and be hired at TFI! Simply put, whoever gets the most votes gets to move on, and whoever doesn't... Well. They'll be put down swiftly and cleanly. :}

You know them, you love them, you better! Introducing Team Fortress’s very own, The Gliders! Yes you heard that right, this year our red friend comes back with a vengeance, and joined by his mysterious Blu counterpart! Representing the Special Forces, the Glider brothers are going all out, it’s employment or bust this year, and even I coward in terror at the thought of what will happen if they lose. Fly high boys! If you know what’s good for ya, vote for your favorite sugar gliders today!
And of course for our newer mercs and voters, meet the Gliders!
It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a depressed middle-aged Italian man with a flight suit! The Red Glider swoops into the fight, dragging you with him via his grappling hook. Our Aviator takes a new approach to our gravel field; with his one-of-a-kind “Gliding Suit” and endless supply of ariel ammo, he’s a menace from a never before seen angle in Team Fortress 2. Above.. He's a bit outta his gourd, spending most of your life isolated in a forest studying "Italy's Shame," Leonardo Da Vinci will do that to you. But no worries! His good cooking and friendly-ish attitude will do more than enough to get you to look past his fre- OCCASIONAL!! Grazie tante! -"mad scientist" outbursts. About planes. Freak. Just whatever you do, DO NOT call it a “Flight Suit.” There’s a difference. He’s not called “The Flyer,” for pete sakes.
Watch high and low, but mainly high, the Blu Glider’s attacks are silent and swift, an efficient killer, he uses his deadly talons to tear into prey whole! Swallowing the rest and regurgitating it hours later as a pellet!.. no that’s an owl, but his keen senses and vast knowledge, (in the field of gliding,) sure do remind you of one! And the killing! He’s really good at that! The Blu Glider is a man of many talents, and could well rule the world if he so chooses, but our fiercely determined friend has only one thing on his mind, something he needs resources only provided by Mann Co. to accomplish. Will this be his in? Will he complete his life’s mission? Will his brother ever remember to pick up his screws he needs? Stick around to see all these questions and more answered as the story of Team Fortress: SPECIAL FORTRESS unravels!
The Fishermen - Kenneth and Drew
@legendsofnevada
Image credit: @/legendsofnevada
Country of Origin: USA
Role: Offense
Hailing from just about every coastline in America and quite a few lakes, The Fishermen are finally ready to settle down in the cozy badlands of Teufort. They may not be used to the dust on the ground and the lead in the water, but they'll learn to reel in a catch more feisty than any fish.
Drew (RED) and Kenneth (BLU) are a father/son duo who both work for Mann Co. as a 10th class. Their primary weapon is a fishing pole, which can be used to reel opponents in close. The reeling does some damage, but the real plan is to draw them up close and finish with a melee. Their blog is @meet-the-fishermen !

Daniel, The Lab Rat
@yarshurdee
Image credit: @/yarshurdee
Have you heard the news? Gray Mann, the third Mann sibling, is hiding something in his laboratory, and it's not a robot! Something worse? Should the TFI prepare for another strike?!
Daniel couldn't have imagined such an outcome when he signed a contract with Mann Co. for the position of BLU pyroman, but fate had other plans. Desertion! Betrayal! A pawn in someone else's grand plan to destroy Saxton Hale! A victim of the conflict between rival organizations—Mann Co. and Gray Gravel Company —he managed to escape from the BLU base, which was blown up leaving no one alive, only because he was the one who pulled the lever that night under pressure and manipulation. Even the spy, who had been pretending to be a loyal friend all this time while working for Gray Mann, did not live to see the triumph.
Following the destruction of the BLU Team, Daniel was captured by the Classics and taken to Gray Gravel Company in 1971, where he was interrogated at length about Saxton Hale and the Administrator. He never revealed any information, but his mental health and any common sense were deep fried under red-hot metal. In the timeline when Gray went out to negotiate with Hale, Daniel was dragged into a series of experiments with australium as a disposable material — a LAB RAT, all for the sake of studying the element and ways to maintain Gray's life extending machine.
Now liquid australium flows through his veins, as he is under surveillance, undergoing surgeries and experiments — thanks to which Gray's machine is also improving, prolonging his life. Thank you, Daniel! Gray Mann Co — freshly rebranded Mann Co which was overtaken by Gray — will remember your deeds forever. After all, Gray Mann plans to live for several more centuries. And Dan lives like this - day after day, gray walls, experiments, robots, and completely boring conversations with the RED Medic, who ended up here voluntarily - the madman! But Dan is not discouraged, because he is also here voluntarily too, right? He also hates Mann Co. Of course, they abandoned him! They left him here and are in no hurry to rescue him! And besides, no one actually died! They just left! They left to live a new life and abandoned him here! But that's okay. Daniel wipes the trails of liquid gold dripping from his nose and smiles. Gray needs him, and that's what matters.
Genetically improved human: his spinal cord has been replaced with an analog synthetic prosthesis that runs on australium and australizes cells. This gives him increased regeneration and physical strength.
Non-violent, quite friendly towards the Classics, deeply respects Gray.
Before tortures he was meek and quiet, now he is blunt, excitable, and cocky.
Keep seeing those golden silhouettes of his late BLU comrades, must be australium that messing with his brain.
Ágatha and Cordelia, The Nurses
@apenas-gigi
Image credit: @/apenas-gigi
Ágatha! The red team's nurse through her whole childhood, always dedicated into defeating blu team, always determined to cure her mates, now blossoms from her late teens into adulthood, still decided into following Doctor Ludwig's steps and will put sweat, blood and tears in all her efforts to do so in this new environment, far from Teufort. Cordelia, an old lady embittered through life deceptions, being dragged once again inside the infirmary room. Serving the people she despises for another time, but it's not like she has a choice, she thinks with herself… Ágatha and Cordelia meet themselves in a military base oversea, exchanging live experiences and a friendship among an oppressive work and living place, between the so called classic mercenaries.
They get to distract themselves from their god-awful work mates by taking apart on this silly contest - why not make this woman's evening a bit better trough a vote?

Ripley Aguirre, better known simply as Pilot, wasn’t always the reckless, cigarette stained daredevil the mercs know today. She grew up on a quiet mexican farm, an only child surrounded by wooden toys and wide skies. Her parents taught her to build, to dance, to fix things with her hand, and encouraged her ambitions. The day she saw her first plane cutting through the clouds, something inside her changed forever. She wanted to touch the sky– and she did.
He became one of the most talented fliers in his division before a mission gone wrong sent him spiraling to the ground, a metal rod piercing his skull in the process. Ripley survived, but his mind didn’t come back in one piece. The person who woke up was still sharp and brave, but there were cracks– memory loss, emotional detachment, a growing addiction to danger. Soon, Pilot replaced Ripley.
What they lost in stability they gained in raw chaos. Pilot craves adrenaline like oxygen. They laugh at the line between life and death, often crossing it for fun. Their memory slips like sand through their fingers, they forget names, faces, even their own past. But when it comes to their team, they loves them fiercely.. sometimes too fiercely.
Among the mercs, opinions on her are… divided.
Scout thinks they're the coolest thing alive and his favorite partner in crime, though he knows better than to trust them with anything serious.
Soldier sees her as a fellow warrior, reckless but valiant. The perfect cadet to trust when you need someone to watch your six.
Pyro understands his chaos the best. Together they draw, babble, and set things on fire, speaking a language only the two of them seem to know.
Demoman shares their laughter and their drinks, but keeps one eye open (ba dum tss). He’s seen what reckless joy can do.
Heavy respects her heart, not her head. He’s the one who grabs her by the collar before she does something truly stupid.
Engineer sighs the loudest when he returns from a flight with half of the plane destroyed… again. Still, he quietly helps him piece things (and sometimes memories) back together.
Medic finds them amusing. He feeds the recklessness like a scientist feeding a lab rat, he knows better than to turn em down completely. Pilot never refuses his requests, and he enjoys every second of it.
Sniper thinks he's too loud, too bold, too everything. He keeps his distance, though begrudgingly respects the loyalty.
Spy finds her exhausting yet reliable. He knows she’d never betray the team so he weaponizes the chaos. (They also happen to share a cigarette brand, mainly the why he tolerates her)
Pilot’s unpredictable nature makes em a wild card on the battlefield, a disaster waiting to happen or a miracle in motion, depends on the wind really. They're loud, bright, unkillable, and unashamedly alive.
She fights not because she remembers why, but because it’s the only thing that still makes sense.

The Magicians!
@hazardtoons

RED Magician, AKA Merpati Sebayang:
23 • she/her
One of the younger recruits at Team Fortress Industries, the Magician takes any opportunity to make a show of things. She's a skilled killer, but has a perpetual smile on her face even in the bloodiest of situations.
Despite having an optimistic, almost naive outlook on the world, the Magician isn't stupid or innocent. Don't underestimate her. She has a mercenary job for a reason. She can blast the head off a Heavy no problem! She keeps her work life and personal life very seperate. She occasionally uses her perpetually sunny exterior to deliberately unsettle people. Contrasting a cute little smile with a blood-soaked uniform is a great way to strike fear and unease in the hearts of enemies.
Like most of the mercs, she has a non-perfect grasp on social skills, especially with her checkered past. She's overly friendly to strangers, can be excessively blunt, and often misreads the tone of situations. Her dream is to one day be a performing magician.
She arrived at TFI after being on the run for a few years in search of her missing sister.
BLU Magician, AKA Myra Dazzle
31 • she/her
Once a wildly successful teen celebrity with a travelling magic show, she abandoned her fame to live her dreams of learning REAL magic. TFI is a jumping-off point for better things and better magic. She is jaded and soft-spoken, and hates all things bedazzled and showy. Although her old cutesy persona occasionally slips in when she isn't paying close attention to her speech…
