I was inspired by my beloved mutuals here to track my reading. I thought it was a neat idea and without further ado here is my January list:
1# Haruki Murakami: Hear the Wind Sing
2# Haruki Murakami: Pinball, 1973
3# Megan Whalen Turner: The Thief
4# N.K. Jemisin: The Obelisk Gate
The warrior who fights for his personal interests earns less than the one who fights for everyone. Red Knight by Ami Thompson.
I may have missed your answer to this elsewhere. If so, apologies. But out of curiosity, what exactly is a fictional character to you? Are they a sort of organic outgrowth of their story, or a potentially free-floating constellation of ideas, or a vehicle used to convey the experiences the reader will have? Obviously they are the tools of storytelling, but it feels like there’s something more soulful to them than that word can convey. But maybe it just feels that way because we see pieces of ourselves, and people we know, in them.
They're people. Ones I don't get to meet in the flesh, but that I encounter through words, just as I encountered you.
