I’ve been wrestling with this song for months, trying to get my voice to cooperate with it, and I think I finally managed to make the two get along.

This song was quite revolutionary for me this year.  Though I listened to them on and off for several years prior, it was only in the last couple of years that the music of Switchfoot became unexpectedly and incredibly important to me.  If I may be so bold, I have to say that some of their songs helped me find the faith to keep moving forward when the days felt impossibly dark.

This song may mean a lot of different things for different people.  Jon Foreman, one of my heroes who I hope I can one day thank in person for the songs he’s written in Switchfoot, has described it as being about “singing into the storm.”  For me, it was this:  Anxiety is a very present struggle for some of us.  A burdensome one.  While there are little things we can do and adjust to help alleviate it, typically we cannot control the things, circumstances, that may be provoking it.  The thing is, we can’t always force ourselves to magically feel a new way about whatever it is that’s stressing us.  And we pretty much can’t ever make that thing disappear from reality.  But what we can do is a complicatedly simple thing called surrender.  Surrender is not denying what we’re feeling, or what’s coming at us, but very much accepting both, and realizing that, whatever happens, whatever we’re feeling… we’re going to make it out alive.  The storm may be swirling around us, but we are still right here. So we sing into the storm.

In 2016,Switchfoot will celebrate its 20th anniversary as a band. This isobviously a huge accomplishment, and it’s up to the fandom to congratulate Jon,Tim, Drew, Chad, and Jerome and to show them how much Switchfoot has impacted its listeners over the past twenty years. That’s what this project is for—to illustrate our passion for Switchfoot’s music, and to emphasize the inspiration their message has brought us all.

 In order to make this project as wonderful as the guys deserve, we need to start now. Inspired by the powerful message of Fading West, this project will require us all to think deeply about our travels throughout 2015, and, more importantly, to consider how we take Switchfoot with us wherever we go.
