Undermourning

Heya! I want to introduce you the idea of my Undertale AU. I called it “Undermourning”. This is based on three threads.

So, here we have data 16th of September, 2015.

1. First one is the most related to the title. Since king Asgore died monsters are under mourning. A lot of the Underground population is suffering from hopelessness and even depression because humans souls are gone as well. Even Toriel, but not because of the same thing. 

To understand it I have to tell about one error that has made this world like this - Sofia and Natalie. Sofia and Natalie are twins. In this AU they fell to the underground instead Frisk. They completed pacifist route, but not the “true pacifist route”. They couldn’t do the true one, becuase none of them had possibility to reset. Sofia’s soul was yellow - the soul of justice. Natalie’s soul was purpule - the soul of perseverance. Flowey didn’t have possibility to reset as well, because Frisk should’ve fallen into the Underground, not Natalie and Sofia. But thanks to Sofia’s desire for justice and Natalie’s strong will, they did it! They made friends with most of Underground population. They’ve defeated king Asgore. They’ve beaten up Omega Flowey. But they couldn’t leave the Underground (it’s kinda unclear where the protagonist is on the end of neutral route. Wiki thinks Frisk is on the surface so if protagonist is then the Sofia morality didn’t let her leave the underground, okay? =w=). Undyne has become new queen. But she didn’t kill Sofia and Natalie. Yea, it sounds ridiculously but Undyne decided to start with policy where humans are treated like friends. I know, it sounds weird, but I’ll explain it soon! 

Natalie and Sofia came back to the Ruins and stayed with Toriel. They pretty often comes to the rest of the Underground and their caretaker isn’t noticing it. Since I’ve said about Toriel, I have to explain her mourning. When she’s taking care of two kids like it was in the past, she just starts recalling her dead children better. People can grief a few times in their life over one thing. And that’s what happening to Toriel. She’s grieving again. Since I’m talking about it, I have to tell that Sofia and Natalie have become friends with Flowey, YAY! And Sofia even got really close to him... she really regrets he doesn’t have soul. 

But Flowey has actually started care about others and their feelings. He can’t feel anything, but he know how others - for example Sofia and Natalie - could feel about things he has done. And here you have answer for the question - “Why didn’t Toriel came back as Queen?”. Flowey cares about his mother and knew that, if she’ll come back then monsters could call her traitor (especially Undyne) and he was suspecting that Undyne might be planning something...

2. Now I’ll explain quiet war between humans and monsters. Frisk has already fallen into the Underground, after three years (2018). Monsters treat him like a friend, like Undyne wanted. Sofia and Natalie liked him too. But one day he found Undyne notes about new plan to destroy the humanity. She thought that killing humans at the start and letting them know that they are not wanted here, isn’t the right move. She has to wait for seven humans, treat all of them like friend, make them trust monsters and throw into a trap where she and royal guards would easily kill them. Frisk has shown these notes to Sofia and Natalie. They were shocked when they found out that monsters (or at least Undyne and people that must’ve known) they thought were their friends had betrayed them. Now they think about their own plan to win this quiet war.

Do you think it’s out of character for Undyne? It’s okay, I’m going to explain her way of thinking better in the future.

3. The last one is Chara. Becuase the error that were Sofia and Natalie, he came back as a spirit, because Frisk should be in the Underground. Chara didn’t know what to do. He couldn’t interact with anything and anyone, including Sofia and Natalie. However, he could look at code. It seemed interactable. He didn’t want to mess anything up at first. But after a while, he has figured out what he could do. He started studing programming. He was studing and studing and studing. He became really good at it. He created new soul and new body for himself. With his new skills, he was able to remake this world. He could do everything better. He could come back to his life with Dreemurrs, with Asriel. He could make monsters live on the surface. But when he saw this quiet war between humans and monsters, he decided that he doesn’t want to live with any of these races. He has decided that these two races deserve just one thing - pain.

Undertale fan in me is coming back to life. I mean, I don't know if motivation to continue this blog is as well, but hey! Summer holidays are coming soon. That's surely a good sign. Especially since, whether I'm coming back all-in or not, there is a post about both my AU(s) and Undertale in general I wanted to post in a long while. For I'm a new person now.

So, I have no idea when I'll post it, but I will sooner or later because it's been bothering me. See ya soon! :>

I'm slow TwT

I'm listening to my playlist with various songs I know in random order, and suddenly a cover in my language of "Stronger than you" Sans version started playing. The person who recorded this cover did it six years ago on Undertale's anniversary. Seeing this "six years ago" below has made me realize it's 2026 now and Undertale is almost eleven years old! My brain decided to make me come to this realization just now. My stars, I've literally been growing up with this game by my side all this time. Ahhh! Now I'm going to drown in nostalgia.

Hello! Still on break

I'm not in my Undertale phase right now, so posting about it would feel tidious. It's still my fav game, I'm just not feelings the obsession right now. Guess that's kind of the consequence of having an account for one thing specifically.

But, I do kinda sketch. I had an idea for different AU that would mix my favourite game with my favourite show (Steven Universe!). Kinda, at least. And despite having the characters designs in my head partially, I can't bring myself to make full drawings right now. I made a sketch for Chara though.

To be clear, they're still non-binary. Actually, I kind of imagine them as being genderfluid, experimenting with their clothes and hair after they fell into the underground. They like their ponytails a lot though. They make them feel connected to the Dreemurrs and their (biological) mother. Also, their hair is supposed to be this fluffy :>

I don't know if I'm going to share this AU much right now. I just know I wanted to show off this sketch. I like how they look. I think I'd like to sketch more of them in the future. Maybe I'd draw Frisk for this AU too. Actually, I should draw Chara and Frisk together, their dynamic is pretty funny when I think about it. Also, I might try designing Toriel. I have this picture of her in my head but not that specific one. And I need her design in this AU for other purpose.

I think for now I'm just fine posting sketches I make that are Undertale-related. So, yeah. I don't promise anything regular though.

Determination Soul

That's an opinion I wanted to share for a while:

Personally, I don't think red is determination. Neither do I think golden is determination.

I don't think determination was ever written in red in the game. It certainly was written in gold (or rather yellow) at least once in True Lab. But so were many other words as a way to highlight keywords in the game. So why would it be any different for determination?

Moreover, soul of perseverance exists, and perseverance and determination are synonyms. Yes, none of souls traits are stated straight-forwardly in the game but they are shown in Ball Game with colors so we can safely assume other soul traits exist.

But determination? It's actually something that, according to Alphys' notes, every human soul has. So I don't think it's an individual soul but rather one of soul ingredients (yes, souls are cooked!).

In that case, what is red soul? There are some theories but… I honestly don't have any of my own :P

Am I going to use it as determination soul anyways? Yeah, probably. It's comfortable in non-game narrative if the theory of red soul being player is real. Still, it was nice to actually adress this.

My Undertale Headcanons

Thought I'd use my little break to share some of my headcanons about the game itself. Enjoy!

The day Chara fell into the Undergroung is the day of game release (09.15.).

Chara's real last name is Birdwhistle.

Frisk's got amber eyes.

Chara's got grass green eyes but can turn them red and make their "creepy face", thus the demon implications

Toriel and Asriel have got ruby eyes.

Last eye color headcanon: Asgore's normal eye color is dark brown but, as seen in the fight with him, one of his eyes can turn orange and the other blue.

That's one of the things he and Chara bonded over. However, aside from that they also had tea times, and tended Asgore's garden together.

Asriel was a late bloomer, he didn't hit puberty before his death.

Chara is the one who came up with the heart lockets, actually.

Chara loves literature, especially poetry.

So, Chara can't actually read Frisk's mind as they guide them as a ghost. They're just trying to be poetic. Just for fun. And to mess with Frisk.

Chara actually liked Toriel's snail pie, and would definitely like Muffet's spider-y pastries if they tried them.

Frisk is low-key afraid of spiders.

Alphys is bisexual, Undyne is a lesbian. I don't see it any other way.

Flowey was created somewhere between yellow soul dying and Frisk falling into the Underground.

Papyrus is autistic. Period. (Yes, I'm going to mention it again, and again, and again. Sue me!)

Temmies do not react to catnip! Valerian on the other hand… actually makes them sensible for a moment :D

Bob is the most intelligent Temmie in the whole Temmie Village.

Drawing achievement!

I haven't been active for a while. I think my energy for Undermourning got drained with finishing Undyne and posting everything. But it will be back! For now, however, I'm going to take break from this AU. On the other hand…

Have ang idea what you're looking at? And why this is a major achievement for me? I managed to draw a character with no sketching, only on two layers (one for lineart, the other for colors), without caring about symmetry so much, and it took me only about 1 hour or 1.5. This doesn't happen with me!

If someone is curious, this bean is Roses!Frisk. Or Undertree Frisk. Or just Rose. I drew them for a certain, specific reason (you'll see :>) but I decided, since I've already drawn them, why not show this cutie? Enjoy! Anniversary

Chara: Mr. and Mrs. Dreemurr? I'm done with all your errands, the only thing I couldn't— Toriel, Asgore and Asriel: Happy fall anniversary! The living room is decorated and there's a chocolate pie on the table. Chara: Ah!… What's going on? Asriel: You've been living with us for a year now, Chara! Chara: Hold on… it's September 15th already? Everyone in the room (except for Chara) nod. Chara: To himself: Thank the stars I got prepared in advance. Now, to the Dreemurrs: I didn't even notice when a whole year has passed. Asgore: Does that mean we managed to make you feel at home, Chara? Chara: Pauses. I guess… I've felt better than at home… Wait, does that mean you asked me to run your errands so you could surprise me? Toriel: Hehe… Let's say we decided to mix business with pleasure. Grabs a knife to divide the pie. Speaking of which, let's get to the pleasure part. Kettle starts whistling from the kitchen. Asgore: Excuse me for a moment, I have put the kettle on. Would you like to have some tea, Chara? Chara: Yes, peppermint, please. Asgore: Goes to the kitchen. Asriel: Speaks after a moment: So, you've said you're better here than on the surface?! Chara: Sighs. I suppose you couldn't just let it go once I said that outloud… Smiles. Yes, I am. And before you ask why, let's say my favourite sibling lives down here.

Undermourning — Cast

I worked on drawings of characters for my Undertale AU, Undermourning, for quite a while and I've finished just recently. It's time to pack it all together and tie it with a bow!

Here's my designs of the most important characters for me. Some are entirely new, some updated. As for the characters that aren't here, if I've already drawn them, their design remains unchanged. There's Chara, Frisk, my six humans OCs, Toriel, Asriel and Flowey, Sans, Papyrus, and Undyne. Also, the art is progressively getting better :>

Chara (He/Him)

The first fallen human, let's go!

Ghost, a narrator to Frisk.

Dirty, little hacker!

The only one capable of All-Reset.

Hates (almost) everyone (soft spot for the goat mama).

Kind of a… deity overly obsessed with jusitce, letting everyone suffer emotionally and mentally ("They do it to themselves."), repeating the process over and over. Fun :3

Frisk (He/Him)

Actually nineth fallen human.

Protagonist, of course :>

DETERMINATION!

Can be adorable, can be cool, can be brooding, and foremost, can be completly intimidating!

Can hear but can't talk.

Likes his hair long!

Yes, he kept these rags (that probably were originally pajama) for years until they actually fit him. Why? Because he can.

Sofia (She/Her)

Eighth fallen human (alongside Natalie).

Twins with Natalie.

White dresses better than striped shirts.

Her outfits don't have to make sense :P

Cold and blunt, might seem rude, but actually social and a sweetheart.

Natalie (She/Her)

Eighth fallen human (alongside Sofia).

Twins with Sofia.

Definitive sweetheart.

Asriel/Flowey (He/Him)

A sentient, soulless flower who used to be crybaby prince goat (●'◡'●)

Flowey is dead inside, Asriel is actually dead.

Flowey is a better person now! And it only took almost becoming god and getting beaten by children.

This wilted petal will drive him crazy. (Sorry not sorry Flowey, but it looks nice, I regret nothing :>)

Toriel (She/Her)

Precious goat mama<3

Pretty similar to canon but… more sick and tired of her, fortunately-unfortunately, immortal life.

Takes care of children, doesn't take care of herself.

Made almost everyone at home like snail pie.

Sunday (She/Her)

Tenth fallen human.

Designed and programmed by Chara. She's his first creation, thus poor quality and reusing assets.

Grumpy.

Who said grumpy people can't love rainbows and other nice things?

Will steal your clothes (unless they're white, gray or black).

Cameron (He/Him)

Eleventh fallen human (alongside Jayden).

Designed and programmed by Chara. Some improvements were made.

Hater who picks up on everything that lives.

Sans (He/Him)

Just a tired dude.

No wonder he's getting along with Toriel so well.

At least he's not immortal :P

Too lazy to even make any real difference in his design.

Papyrus (He/Him)

The cooler brother.

He's a royal guardsman now!

Showers in his armor.

Everyone likes Papyrus. Everyone. Even those who hate everyone (except for Chara…Chara, why must you ruin perfect statistics?).

Oh, and still wears his 'regular' clothes underneath :D

His helmet is wonderful and I won't change my mind, even many years later, when I will think this drawing is awful, my love for the helmet will remain.

Undyne (She/Her)

Queen of the Underground.

Originally, I was going to give her full Asgore's cape but I decided to experiment a little… and the results were too good to go back.

Sometimes wears ponytail, sometimes a bun. Buns are better though :P

Asgore is dead, Alphys doesn't exist… now she waters flowers despite having no interest in gardening, and watches "Mew Mew Kissy Cutie" not knowing why it feels nostalgic.

Even more morally questionable.

Chara actually (used to) admires her. And I don't blame him :>

Finish line

I've literally just finished my Undyne drawing! I'm in putting together color pallette, and doodling stage! Soon, I'll be done with designs for characters from my AU. I'm so happy. It took way longer than it should've. When I'm done, I'm posting everything together. For now, I'll give you a sketch I made while drawing.

Also, I cared way less about symmetry while drawing Undyne. She's my favourite Undertale character and the last one I'm drawing for now. So, I could as well just enjoy it, right? She's not completly asymmetrical though, she looks just fine. I think I care way too much about symmetry while drawing.

Long time ago, when I was in elementary school, while I still had art classes, I was using ruler while drawing. My art teacher told me that I mustn't use it because it's art, not math. I think I should've really taken this advice to heart, especially when treating art like math kind of sucks all the enjoyment out of it…

I was nearly dead, now I'm alive

Yesterday and the day before yesterday, I thought I was gonna kill myself. (figuratively)

My phone is an idiot — it decided it will stop responding on touch. I wanted to turn it off and on since it was responding to the buttons on its side. But that didn't work because my phone is designed the way you have to tap on the screen whether you want to turn it off or automatically turn it off and on.

So, guess what? I had to wait two days for it to run out of battery, and it had around 75% when it stopped working. I think alarms which I couldn't turn off and for which I had to wait to pass helped battery run out quicker. Still, I was waiting two days, and I couldn't even know if it would work.

I thought I would have to get it fixed (in best case scenario) or replaced (in worst case scenario). But I have Undyne's sketch in Ibis Paint on this phone. That's what I was upset about the most! Forunately, it did work, and now I can continue drawing. Here's some treat:

So, yeah, I didn't have to kill myself. Instead, I have to draw.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Happy birthday to myself! I'm playing my present (Cuphead! :D), rewatching "Steven Universe" (just finished second season), and a friend wanted me to watch "Star vs the Forces of Evil", so I'm going to start today as I told them I would start when I'm done with second season of SU.

The only thing that lacks are "Undertale"!… and "Anna's Quest", and "Mad Father"/"Misao", and "Mao Mao: Heroes of Pure Heart", and "Amphibia", and many other media I like. Oh, well, you don't always have a phase for everything. Also, there's family too!

But, speaking of Undertale, or specifically of Undermourning, I'm not working on Undyne now to be honest. I have a little creative block. When it comes to drawing, at least. I think I'm going to finish a certain writing project (which is almost done!), and then I'm going to try go back to drawing. If I won't finish both of these projects before summer ends, I'll kill myself (figuratively :P). (Still, I'm going to be very unhappy with myself.)

Sad Doodle

I've just started working on Undyne and in the meantime, I wanted to show one of doodles I made for Papyrus.

I didn't show it in the earlier post I made because it's a little sad for certain reason. But, now I feel more comfortable about it.

So, yeah, it's a doodle of Annoying Dog munching on Papyrus' bone and Papyrus just being fine with this (until he realizes he has no more bones). Originally, it was Papyrus yelling at the dog. But I decided to change it.

Why? Because, before I managed to finish this doodle, my dog died. My good, silly, old girl went over the rainbow bridge. I just didn't feel up to drawing skeleton, who I kin to a degree, yelling at a dog after that. So, instead I decided that "sometimes you need to let it happen and allow furry critter to enjoy your attacks"<3

Anyway, thank you for reading, I'm fine now. That's just how life is.

I've finished drawing Papyrus! Here's a little doodle. Only one for him.

Anyway, it means there's just Undyne left. Then, I'm going to post all of these drawings. I'm so excited for it and eager to start with Undyne. But I'm taking a little break. I'm drawing something traditional way, on paper. I got so invested in these Undermourning arts that I forgot about drawing on paper. After I'm done with that, I'm going to start Undyne. Which means soon!

By the way, I also have plans to finally post something more informative about my AU and I think about writing a short story in the future too (though maybe I'll leave that for Undertale next anniversary as it would fit…). I still have some other things to take care of but hey! I have a lot of free time in this part of the year!
