// Okay answering your question mister anon, is likely a mistake, and will probably just land me with more trash in my inbox, but I’m going to go ahead and answer your rather rude comments simply because I think the point is being a little bit missed…
I do not have any problem with FF14 itself as game.
If they can support such a payment model, good for them. I am very glad that there is a competitive game on the market. What I have a gripe with is the fact that the model they use is very very easy to abuse. FF14 apparently has a very good content cycle and whatever. Many people clearly are willing to pay the amounts they have requested for the quality of content that they produce. But what this is not what I’m upset with. It’s the precedent of the model that it sets for other games. Again, I will say FF14 for the moment, does not have this problem.
But lets say in the future, some other game dev comes along and adopts the same model. They think, oh, players will be willing to pay for a base game, a monthly subscription, and additional expansions. Great. Let’s make that the new standard. If anyone here follows gaming news, look at DLC and the huge mess that it has become. For those of you who are unsure of what the DLC issues are that plague this current day, a short summary is that some games come with on disc DLC. Content that already exists, comes with the game that is bought, but is locked behind a pay wall. Sometimes it is harmless. Other times it is a huge deal. There have even been issues where developers focus all their resources on making more DLC instead of fixing their base game that is riddled with bugs. This is what I am afraid of with the FF14 payment model. What will happen when the next developer comes along, deciding to cut content from their game or leave bugs in their game in favor of pushing the next expansion? Not everyone is as responsible as the devs behind FF14. If they were smart, then perhaps I wouldn’t have a problem with it. But since when could we depend on something like that?
Maybe I’m just paranoid or perhaps I’m just too jaded from bad experience in the past. Nothing would make me happier than if I were wrong and this prediction of mine is completely wrong. This is the last I will post on the matter since I’m already getting my inbox set on fire with hate.
