Concepts to use in horror
⢠Being watched/followed. Can be used with plots like a home invasion or someone watching another person through a webcam.
⢠Losing control. Can be used with plots like possession, being forced to kill/hurt people to save oneself or a loved one, being blackmailed, etc.
⢠The nature of humanity. This can work when the âmonsterâ is a human, and can call into question the concept of good and evil. Works well with the above in my opinion, as a human being doing monstrous things can sometimes lead to questions about humanity and whether humankind is good.
⢠The end of humanity. Can be cheesy (like in a lot of zombie plots), but is innately scary to a lot of people to think about. Things that seem more plausible, such as an apocalypse related to pandemics or environmental pollution, can come across in a more serious way when done subtly.
⢠Isolation. In some cases this can seem a little too convenient to the plot, but when done right isolation can up the terror of the plot, or even serve as the plot itself. Being trapped somewhere, like in the woods or in a small space, could work for this.
⢠Oneâs own insignificance. Most cases Iâve seen where this works well show the characterâs smallness in relation to something else. The ocean, space, cosmic gods, etc.
⢠The unknown. Often works well with the above in my opinion. The ocean and space, for example, would be good settings for this.
⢠Instinctive responses. The human brain tends to naturally react to things like violence, disease and contamination, and other things that threaten survival. Using these things too gratuitously can easily become campy or even voyeuristic and insensitive, but they can be used well.
Liminal Spaces in Witchcraft
First of all, what is a liminal space? A liminal space refers to a place or time that is in a period of transition between two phases. These are usually places where reality feels altered because you are neither moving forward or backward, like a rest stop. The word liminal originates from the Latin word limens, meaning threshold. These places often give off a sense that time stands still and that you are experiencing some sort of reality shift.Â
In magic and witchcraft these spaces are considered to be the boundary between our world and the other, it is known as âthe in-betweenâ. These places are considered areas of great magic because it is believed this is where the veil is thin. These places are great for divination, spirit work, meditation and astral travel; they are ideal for hedge witchcraft.
Times & Spaces of Liminality:
crossroads manmade or natural
river, creek or lake shores/ beaches
hallway/corridor/stairwells/landings/doorways
graveyards
dawn, dusk, afternoon, midnight
valleys
forest glades
many more!
Samhain/Halloween is considered the best time to communicate with spirits and faeries because of its liminality, it is a time of transition between autumn and winter. Irish folklore tells that this is the day faeries and ghosts come out to play because of the veil thinning. The equinoxes and sabbats like Beltane and Imbolc are also days of liminality because the time of day and night are equal (equinoxes) or it is a transition between seasons. Â
Mental states of liminality are also times of spirit communication. While being in a meditative state we are in a state of transition between our concious and sub-concious minds, this is where we sometimes experience astral projection or messages from spirits. People often experience spirit while falling asleep because this is another state of liminality.Â
In my craft I often practice in liminality in order to connect with the faerie realms.

You know, when youâre autistic and occasionally nonverbal, needing sign language to communicate anything to your loved ones on bad days, the song âThe Sound of Silenceâ takes on a whole new meaning. âAnd in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never share And no one dared Disturb the sound of silenceâ Incidentally, I LOVE seeing this song performed in ASL.Â
Things we need more of in media
Deaf representation
Hard of hearing representation
Aspergers and autism representation
Representation of all disabilities
LGBTQ+ representation
Genuinely kind people rather than "nice guys" unless taking the mega mind villain route
And more, feel free to add on.
John Wick, elitest of elite hit men, impeccable dresser, dog lover, and muscle car enthusiast, took the time to become fluent in sign language at some point in his life, and we donât talk about that enough
You canât make this up â ď¸ [image Description: Top, a group of white males flashing a hand sign. Bottom, a women demonstrating the American Sign Language word for âasshole.â Text reads, Hereâs a bunch of white nationalists from Orange County flashing the hand sign for âwhite powerâ which is also the American Sign Language sign for âassholeâ]
