“yeah?” charlie raised his gaze in interest and looked at carter while he tried no to fumble with the money. as he handed it over he couldn’t help but probe a little bit further. after all, this was the most interesting thing that had happened to him all day. “i can’t totally understand wanting to explore the world, see something new and all that. i haven’t really stayed in one place for more than a couple of months since i was sixteen. a year at the most. what made you come back?”

carter nodded and accepted the cash, stuffing it into his pocket. “oh?” the dark haired male practically popped up in place at charlie’s comment. “that’s a lot of moving around. and so young too...i don’t know if i’d be able to handle all of the running around. i hate moving ... packing up your life and then unpacking it. it takes me forever,” he laughed a little, and leaned his hip into the counter. “i’ve been away for a couple of years now and while my parents and i don’t really get along, i really did like this area and i have friends that are basically like family too, so i knew i’d have support from people that matter.” he knew he was rambling a little bit, but this conversation was leagues better than the ruined night by the creep in the theatre.

a smile of delight was finally appearing on charlie’s face as carter laughed at his, slightly terrible, joke. “well, i’ll make sure to read up on it until next year, so we’re both prepared,” he promised. “and no, it’s no bother,” charlie hurried to add. “you’re totally in the right to ask for a refund! hang on.” with a few pressing on buttons followed by a few muted swear words, charlie let out a triumphant noise. “okay, cash or card?” while the refund went through charlie tapped at the register. “you said you just moved here?” he asked to keep the conversation going.

carter nodded his head minutely in silent thanks. “well, since you’ve already started. cash is fine,” he shrugged his shoulders and slipped his hands into his pockets. at charlie’s second inquiry, carter perked up and nodded again. “yeah, well, technically it’s more like just moved back. i lived her for a few years when i was in high school. then i went to college and just...” he shrugged. divulging details about sylvie wasn’t exactly his m.o. when dealing with strangers so he glossed over the true reason for his departure from stone harbor. “the world was calling out to me more than home.”

“you’re very wise,” charlie replied tiredly, but with a faint smile still on his face. “and hopefully that’s true. let’s blame it on the spooky hours going on right now. as long as they disappear once halloween is over i’m open to forgiving.” with a grin, genuine this time, charlie accepted carter’s hand and shook it firmly. “nice to meet you carter, and thank you for not coming out here to yell at me. and really, you should get your money back because no one should go through that unless you specifically ask for it. but i think that costs extra and is off the secret menu.”

carter shook charlie’s hand and offered him a sheepish smile. “if i’m being perfectly honest, that was my plan to start off with. not the yelling, but coming out here and asking for a refund,” he began. “but then i saw how frazzled you were already so i didn’t want to dump all that on you. if you insist, i won’t say no, but it’s okay.” it took him longer than he’d like to admit to register charlie’s quip about the ‘secret menu’ but when it finally did, he let out a rather embarrassing laugh. “oh my god. that was loud. wow, ignore that please. i’ll keep the secret menu in mind for next halloween.”

at hearing the empathy in the man’s voice, charlie gave him a faint, but grateful, smile. “i’m used to the creeps, i just don’t understand why they think horror movies is the way to go. and yeah, it’s my first week and i just hope that this is some elaborate prank they use as a crash course to learn the job. because if this is a calm day i don’t know how i’ll survive a busy one.” he dragged his hand through his hair, making it stick up all over the place. “i should probably deal with this, but i’m kinda hoping that if i ignore it for long enough it’ll go away.” he tapped his name tag. “i’m charlie. and very apologetic you had to go through this, can i offer you a refund?”

“well, they wouldn’t be creeps if what they did made any sense, right? i wouldn’t worry about it too much outside of callling the cops,” he chuckled. carter nodded along and thought back to his time in stone harbor. “well, from experience i can say that i haven’t heard of this happening all that often so i think the weirdos just really came out this halloween season.” carter hid a smile as the man’s hair remained straight up after he ran his hands throughout. it was a silly picture but it illustrated just how stressful his day must have been. carter extended his hand out with a grin, “i’m carter. and ... honestly, don’t worry about it. i was going to ask, but i think you’ve had a rough week. i don’t want to leave you guys short or anything.”

charlie groaned loudly as the man in front of him told him of, yet another, jerk off incident. “again? this is so fucking weird, and creepy, who jerks off to friday the 13th… and now rocky horror. that’s just begging for me to call the police.” he gave a pained smile. “it’s just me, pretty sure i’m the only one who even bother’s to work. security came in at ten and left like… thirty minutes later.” another groan, followed by a deep sigh. “you think i’d be used to this…”

carter couldn’t help but feel sympathy for the poor employee who seemed to be having one hell of a week. “ah, sorry man. that sucks,” he began, scratching the back of his head. that was creepy. “i mean, i don’t think anyone would be used to having to deal with creeps on a daily basis at work. besides, i don’t think i’ve seen you here before. of course, that doesn’t mean much since i’m new in town, but i figure you’re new at this job.” he had planned to ask for his money back for the whole ordeal but seeing the poor suffering soul, he couldn’t exactly bring himself to ask. “hopefully it’ll brighten up? i... don’t know what else to say. sorry,” he chuckled.

Carter hopped up on the counter at the Flicked Bean and grinned at the boy behind the counter. The coffee shop was mostly empty and he was too excited to really care about disturbing other customers. “Minnie is watching Sylvie today and keeping her overnight so that means, you, my friend, must take me out on the town on a night of debauchery,” Carter lifted his clasped hands up and batted his eyelashes at Rowan. “Pretty please?” // @rvwans

clementine never liked pools much. they reminded her of sweaty summers packed into the kid splash ‘pool’ in new hampshire. shuddering at the thought, she still fixed on her strappy one piece. clem never missed a party. especially after the hellish week she’d had at the diner. the girl needed to let loose. meekly, clem wandered over to the seating area and sat her towel on a lounge chair. it was already quite loud, and she was stone cold sober so a quick fix was definitely needed. “okay… where’s the bar? cause i might start crying into my towel if i don’t get like twelve tequila shots down the hatch within the next hour. don’t worry – i’m a… happy drunk,” she rambled, a smile spilling over her features. not true. 

carter laughed, wrapping an arm around clem’s shoulders and pulling her close. “ c’mon clem, you gotta take it easy on me. i haven’t been out partying in months. if you start out like that right out the gate, i’ll never be able to keep up with you,” he grinned playfully before ruffling her hair. “ you don’t need to lie to my face though. i’ll help you get plastered ... maybe just not twelve right away ? ” he offered, turning her through the crowd towards the open bar he could (just barely) see over the tops of people’s heads.

he sipped at his drink and examined the drunk crowd, alcohol very much present in the air. it wasn’t like him to show up to these events that the complex liked to hold, he didn’t believe in unity between neighbours. christopher liked his privacy, which is why he had the condo farther from the rest. this is like the place he would go to pick up a girl that had no idea what she was getting in to, yet as he looked at the dancing sea of both females and males all christopher could see was a haze. he furrowed his brows, sipping out of his glass once more. “the alcohol is cheap, i don’t know why i expected something more from these guys.” he spoke to no one in particular.

it was a rare night that carter managed to find a babysitter willing to spend the night with sylvie so that he could enjoy a little ‘me’ time. that being said, now that he was out and mingling at the annual pool party he wanted to be sure to make the most of it. carter had only been living in the apartments for the past two years, but he really enjoyed the sense of community he received from others. it was comforting not to be looked down or snubbed for being such a young father. he was content for the moment to nurse his drink and observe the other party goers (many who were in a much worse state of inebriation than he was) until he heard a voice. carter glanced over his shoulder and smiled a little, conspiringly. “ at least it’s free, right ? can’t complain too much. ”

speaking of sylvie, carter has full-custody of her since mom ran off as soon as she could after giving birth to sylvie

he really loves dancing but he keeps telling himself it’s just a side gig until he can go back to school & get something more respectable to better support sylvie

his relationship with his parents isn’t the greatest but he tries to mend it for sylvie’s sake

so just to give carter some closure here before he returns to my box of indie muses with mina, this is what carter did:

dyes his hair blonde because he’s feeling sexy (and drunk) one night

finally graduates college & with his business degree can finally get his photography business off the ground (and out of his apartment)

once he saves enough money he moves himself & Sylvie to a nice little house with more space for her to grow into

( he still teaches classes occassionally at Miss Frankie’s but that’s because he loves dancing. besides, Sylvie is still taking classes there too. she probably loves it even more than he does. )

cARter also finally confesses to @taejccn that he likes him a little more than a friend ... okay maybe a lot more than a friend

“well, no offense to you, but declan is totally the type to pull a prank like that -- even if he won’t admit it,” carter chuckled. “i’m actually sort of still waiting for you to call me a dunce for falling for your trick ... but you sort of carry yourself differently than declan does ... and he’s nowhere near that good of an actor.” carter grinned good-naturedly before he tapped the back of micah’s hand. “you shouldn’t crack your knuckles, by the way. you could hurt yourself,” he advised, already in the habit of stopping his five year-old from cracking her knuckles. “sorry,” carter apologized after a moment, ducking his head in embarrassment just as micah’s words registered. "oh god. well, i hope i haven’t ruined your impression of me. is it a good one at least?”
