My dad just got promoted at work which means in 6 months we have to move out of state. I'm a freshman in high school and I'm out to my mom as lesbian but I know I'm trans. I'd like to be out and appear as a male. I'd like to be stealth at my new school because no one will know me and whatnot. Should I come out to my parents and tell them how I want to present myself? My mom isn't accepting of me being gay but I really need to do something because it hurts. Any suggestions? I'd appreciate it..

I say, you should try to write you mom a letter explaining to her that you thought being a lesbian was who you were and now you discover it is more than that. Give her resources and such about how to learn more about it whether it is websites, books, etc. Tell her it’s something you need to do for yourself and you don’t want to be forced to be someone you are not at this new school. I was that way at my new school, I tried to fit in so much and it only made me miserable. You’re lucky to have a way to be yourself from the start and a chance to make friends who love you as who you are. Just try to explain to your mom, she might not understand at first, but a helping hand from you and even us if you want to show her our channel, is a good way to start your transition. Keep your head up and don’t give up on who you are. Embrace it man. - Landon

My mom hated when I came out to her as being lesbian but to my surprise she took it much better when I came out as being trans. What I would do though is bring up the topic first. Try and find some news or a show about anything dealing with transgender people and bring it up. If she gets suspicious say people at school or work were talking about it and you just wanted to hear a more adult opinion about the topic. Once you feel out her opinion on transgender people then you can make a better assumption on what would work out for you. Most people think their parents will not be accepting but a lot of the time parents accept their children it will just take some time. With that being said there are parents that won’t. It just really depends and I don’t know her personally. Your safety is the biggest concern though. If you feel like your safety isn’t in jeopardy then tell her but if you feel like it is maybe bring up just going to talk to a therapist because you’re sad and nervous about the big move and you just want to talk to someone who will have an unbiased opinion about the situation. Then maybe the therapist might be able to help you come out to her as well as possibly even helping you medically transition (if you feel that’s right for you).
