Seeing as Gabriel is practically a resident because of how often he’s been to Seaport, it was no surprise when he heard all the talk about the annual Royal Beach Ball in two weeks. In the past, he’d ditch the traditional dates tag along with Sabrina and Elijah, his two best friends, but seeing as things aren’t as they were before going with them wasn’t an option. He thought about ditching the ball all together, but then came a text from a girl he happened to enjoy spending the majority of his time with. Rather than going for the simple “will you be my date?”, Gabriel wanted to do a little bit extra for the girl seeing as it was his first time ever asking someone to the annual ball and he always felt the motto “go big or go home” when it came to her.
The girl was curious and always looking for answer and with that at play, Gabriel decided to turn his ask into a little scavenger hunt with the memories the two have made since they met as clues. After the many vacations at Seaport, Gabriel had managed to befriend the majority of the store owners and employees around the town shops, which made placing clues around town easier and the scavenger hunt all the more fun. With the whole town at his boundaries, Gabriel was able to scatter the clues rather than keeping them in one area. She had a big ego, so Gabriel making her work for the clues wasn’t an issue.
Music was the root of the friendship he had with the girl, so Gabriel instantly knew that the record store downtown would be where the scavenger hunt ended. It was cliche, probably obvious, and a bit cheesy, but it was where it all started for the two, so what better than to ask her there to be his date to the annual ball? Even if it’s the first place she checks if she gives up on the hunt mid finish, then he’ll simply drag her for being a dumb bitch who doesn’t appreciate the shit he does for their 80/20 friendship.
((the clues and all that stuff are under the cut!!))
1. Text message from Gabe: RISE AND SHINE, YOU’RE GOING ON A SCAVENGER HUNT, BABELY. Come to my apartment and go to the kitchen. You know where I hide the spare key. Breakfast is getting cold, so you better fucking run because I slaved 5 minutes of my life to make it. Don’t forget clean up after yourself when you’ve finished!
2. A sticky note under the bowl with her favorite cereal served: I tired making you play with me one time, but you kept hitting my balls when you tried to score, so that’s why I never invite you to play anymore. (the soccer field)
3. You were new and neither of us had a membership, so we snuck in. It wasn’t that cool, but hey! We learned some stuff from those catty grandmas and pretentious 30 year old women. The group of grandmas will be at the front, so find them. (seaport country club)
4. A sticky note from one of the old ladies: I bet you tried asking her for answers, but too fucking bad because I paid her $50 to keep quiet and if she spilled, then i’m suing the both of you for not being loyal. Anyways, you’ll find the next clue from the man who runs the ride from those cheesy 90′s teen romance movies. You know, where they kiss at the very top because the view is “so romantic” and “so in the moment.” (the ferris wheel at the board walk)
5. A sticky note from the man + a water gun: I didn’t pay the guy to keep his mouth shut, but i’m praying you try to ask him for answers & he spilled. Take the water gun and go to the neighborhood where my family rented out one summer. Ring the door bell using the water gun. (seaport heights)
6. A sticky note from the neighbor: Nobody lives in that house and you looked fucking stupid using a water gun to ring a door bell. Go get some ice cream to heal your possibly bruised ego because I told the neighbor to take a video of you doing it and i’m probably gonna use it against you in the future. (hal’s ice cream parlor)
7. A sticky note from the ice cream girl + her favorite ice cream: Eat your ice cream at the place with sand & sea shells. Go to the lil hide out we found. (the beach)
8. A sticky note at the lil hide out: We had a karaoke night here once. We made a fool of ourselves and got a little bit drunk, but it was fun. (sandbox lounge)
9. A sticky note from the person who manages the karaoke: This is your last clue and props to you if you actually made it because I would’ve fucking quit and went home to take a nap. You probably already know where I am, but go to the place where you full on yelled at me even though you didn’t even know me. (record store downtown)
10. Gabriel waiting at their spot at the record store with his guitar out ready to play her a funny song he wrote about her before he asks her to be his date, but he’ll pretend to be disappointed when she comes because he was expecting another girl, but Hadley ended up showing up #yikes.
“The only way I’d be caught dead at ‘the b a l l–” Dahlia said with her nose in the air, complete with a curtsy. “– would be wasted. Then again, who needs a ball for that?”
“If you don’t want to go to the ball, then dont?” Gabriel said eyeing her. “Unless someone has already asked you to the ball, then don’t even think about it.” He shrugs casually. “And if someone does, then tell them no rather than stringing them along like fresh bait.”
milo: i just love how you can play with dogs, cats seem so withholding you know? like they're secretly planning to take over the world or something??
milo: i am, i am! what are you?
gabriel: the dots you added says otherwise, mate.
gabriel: dogs are so playful, while cats only want attention when they want attention depending on their breed. my aunt has a cat named yuki and she only comes out if she wants to be loved, but if not she'll claw at you if you even try to touch her. and some of them have this look in their eye that just screams "i've already planned you death" and it's a nightmare.
elijah: i don't want to put it on you. i'm just using you as an excuse for me being a shitty guy. we didn't adjust, because we didn't want to adjust. we wanted you to be back in seaport. we wanted to be smoking on my bed or behind your house laughing about fuckin' cow tipping. we didn't want you to leave, because we didn't know what to do when you did.
elijah: he's an asshole. i wouldn't spend my life, risk my life, ruin my life trying to please him. for the love of god...
elijah: yeah, he's stupid. i don't know, i felt bad for him, i guess. if it was anyone other than him, i would've pressed charges. but it being someone i knew, it was- i don't know. it was different. we went to school with him, like, i didn't want to see him behind bars for any reason. and i didn't wanna be that reason. yeah, but i'm not anymore, am i? so what's the point? he's not gonna drink and drive again, i'm sure this shit's fucked him up just as much emotionaly as it did to me physically. fine, i can't stop you.
elijah: no, not like that. i was, uh, i was just caught up in something earlier that night.
gabriel: well you should've fucking adjusted! i fucking left, big fucking deal. you two were together. you two knew i'd be gone for a while. fucking adjust and get in with the new reality! adjust and learn to do the trio without me for a bit so there would be a fucking trio to come back to!
gabriel: guess we're both different when it comes to our dads.
gabriel: what makes gideon so special that you dont press charges on his ass? we went to school with him who fucking cares? he gave you a fucking concussion for 4 months. i dont even tihnk he should be driving if he's stupid enough to drive under the influence. when i see him next i fucking will fucking asshole
gabriel: caught up in something earlier that night??? still dont see how the car crash was your fault??
milo: to a certain extent, i mean if my horoscope told me to go jump off a bridge, i wouldn't do it but if my horoscope tells me to eat a doughnut i'm not going to object
milo: nothing wrong with ending up with a dog, dogs are great!! and cats too
milo: but ok, let's see if the stars get this one right. i'm a pisces.
gabriel: but isnt that just you wanting to eat a donut, but using your horoscope as an excuse?
gabriel: dogs are amazing, i love dogs. cats are cool, too, but they're freaky with how flexible they are. Do they have bones? like REAL bones?
gabriel: you're a pisces? who would have thought. jk i dont know you well enough to know. i assume everyone is either a cry baby cancer or bitch ass scorpio.
elijah: he's been talking about coming to town. whether he does or not is another story.
elijah: you didn't say goodbye, gabe. i thought there might've been a damn reason for that, so i didn't write. i should've, but i didn't.
elijah: life isn't always like the movies, though. we were with each other for a while, man. then we just drifted. she went through some shit, too, a-and i tried to be there, i really did. i just didn't know how to be without your fuckin' ass. none of the things we used to do worked, cuz you weren't around, y'know?
elijah: i'm just telling you the truth. i am proud of you for enlisting, never said i wasn't. you didn't want to enlist, gabe. you didn't wanna go to war, your dad wanted you to go to war. don't think that i don't have any fucking respect for you, when you went out there and did something i would never even consider. i'm just saying it's not something you wanted to do, and you don't owe him anything else.
elijah: yeah, he did. he was drunk, said he didn't know it was me, and he called 911. don't, man. micah already did, i think, anyways. and i, uh dropped the charges. i'm an idiot, it was probably like partially my fault.
gabriel: i couldn't say good bye. you two were/are my best friends. if i said good bye, then i wouldn't have left. you should've, elijah. i'm a hypercritical dick, but you should've.
gabriel: you can't put all that on me. you can't put the reason why you two drifted on me, it's not fair. things are different when a person leaves, but that's why you adjust. try new things to be there for her. being the person i couldn't be when she needed me. she needed her friends, elijah and wether or not i was there, you still could've been the friend she needed.
gabriel: you don't seem very proud when you're fucking ragging me about it. i need some support from my best friend, not all this other shit. it's not something i wanted to do, you're right, but i do owe my father. i'm his eldest son and he expected more from me, but i keep dragging him down because of my choices and mistakes. he needs to be proud for something when he looks at me and if that means throwing myself into war, then i'm gonna fucking do it.
gabriel: drunk and he still went behind the wheel? is gideon fucking stupid? we're dumb, but we're not fucking stupid enough to put other people's lives in danger by getting behind the wheel under the influence? the fuck? you dropped the fucking charges? you should've made him do some fucking time for what he did. you were in a fucking coma for crying out loud! micah already did it, but you were in a coma for more than a month, so i'm gonna go with that.
gabriel: what do you mean it's partially your fault? don't tell me you were under the influence too because i swear to fucking god, elijah...
milo: i really need to delete this horoscope app off my phone because it's starting to control my life
milo: i legit just decided to treat myself to a donut bc i was told today is a good day to "enjoy life's simpler pleasures" even tho i wasn't even hungry
milo: so apparently i'm one of those people now, feel free to judge me
gabriel: you believe in that type of stuff? horoscopes and all? i bet you pay money for those fortune tellers at fairs. they'll tell you about how you'll fall in love and you'll believe it, but 5 years down the road and the only thing you've fallen in love with is a new dog breed.
gabriel: or a cat, but you seem like a dog person.
gabriel: are you a dog person?
gabriel: you know what? i'll check your horoscope and see which one you are. are you a leo? capricorn? aries? gemini?
sabrina: whatever gabriel. you weren't around when elijah got into his car accident and spent four months in a fucking coma. for the first time i was scared that he wouldn't wake up and the next time i would see him was in a casket six feet under.
sabrina: where were you then?
sabrina: or where were you when my father got arrested for false embezzlement and my family lost everything.
sabrina: we had nothing. we had to sell our house, our car and my mother had to work two jobs. my brother and i took out more money on student loans then we ever should have too.
sabrina: you already heard shit from Elijah? good.
sabrina: i hope our words actually fucking mean something to you this time.
gabriel: I didn't know about the car accident or the coma, sabrina. no one told me. I found out about the whole thing about 2-3 hours ago during my phone call with elijah.
gabriel: ... and i didn't know about your father's arrest or family issues either. Elijah told me that you were going through a rough time, but I didn't know he meant financially.
gabriel: i'm sorry i wasn't there for the two of you. i'm sorry for leaving without a good bye. i'm sorry for not checking up on you guys with letters. i'm sorry for not finding you guys when i got back to town. i'm sorry I wasn't there when you needed me. i'm sorry.
gabriel: I didn't know any of that was happening and if I was there, then I would've done whatever I could to have helped, but i wasnt and i'm sorry for that.
gabriel: i've been hearing so much shit from you two and both of you are right, but neither of you tried to reach out either. i didn't communicate with either of you, but I didn't receive any letters either. I'm a dick for leaving and not being there when my best friends needed me, but it takes 2 ((or three in our case)) to tango. i'm not the only one who can write & send letters, Sabrina.
elijah: how he was glad i didn't die. wasn't that blunt, but that was the main idea.
elijah: of course we'd want to hear from you. fuck, we're you're best friends. do you not understand that we care about you? why is that so hard to grasp? you act like we stopped caring the moment you left, but everything just changed, man.
elijah: just letting you know things weren't all bright and dandy here. thought it might be touching to know that we were absolutely fuckin' miserable when you left.
elijah: is he proud of you now, gabe? is he gonna lay off, you think? cause i don't. he's going to want you to be exactly like his ass, want you to settle down in a year and have kids. he's gonna have you fishing and building shelves and shit before you know it.
elijah: uh, yeah. head trauma, a few broken ribs. i should've died. nearly did. march 12th. mm, yeah, and gideon was the hitter. surprised you haven't heard, i've kinda been on the cover of the newspaper for the past five months. you've had your own shit to deal with, i guess. probably figured you knew.
gabriel: thats all? did he even bother coming back to visit you to make sure you're okay?
gabriel: but you didn't send me any letters either? you make it seem like it's my responsibility to send letters first, when you both could've sent one first as a reassurance for me.
gabriel: I get that now, thanks. I don't have a right to say this, but having a best friend leave without a good bye sucks, but if anything your anger towards me could've brought you two together. Doesn't that happen in movies? One best friend leaves and the other two make a pact to never leave each other?
gabriel: No, he's not, but it's cutting me some slack. I'm not getting nagged at as much. You know what, Elijah? I really don't need to fucking hear this shit from you. If you're my best friend, then fucking cut me some slack and at least /act/ like you're proud of me enlisting and doing whatever the hell I did for our country. Fucking support me. Don't be like my dad giving me shit about things that I do. I already have him and I really don't need a number two.
gabriel: Gideon hit you and ran? I'm going to fuck him up, he's dead. He's fucking dead. When I got back I locked myself in my apartment. Wouldn't really do anything or see anyone, let alone look at the newspaper. I didn't know, Elijah. If I didn't I wouldn't have been such an ass and yelled at you. Or said whatever I said in that drunk voice mail.
gabriel: I never walked out on you. Byes are hard. You're drunk, Sab. And you're a scary drunk, so can we do this when you're sober?
sabrina: uh huh keep telling yourself that.
sabrina: if i wasn't so fucking angry right now i would sing why the fuck you lying.
sabrina: no gabriel we're doing this right here and right now.
sabrina: and God help you if you hang up this phone before this conversation ending.
gabriel: walking out on you means I stopped caring, which I didn't. I still care. I just wasn't around. That sounds even worse, but whatever.
gabriel: If you want to do this right here, right now, then go. Get it off your chest. I already heard shit from Eli, so might as well finish the circle.
*being in a drunken state sabrina picked up her phone to dial gabriel in a drunk fury. the phone rings for a second until finally a voice cracks on the other line.*
sabrina: knock knock?
sabrina: who's there?
sabrina: sabrina.
sabrina: sabrina who?
sabrina: sabrina the fucking friend who you fucking walked out on without saying a single goodbye too. that's fucking who.
gabriel: I never walked out on you. Byes are hard. You're drunk, Sab. And you're a scary drunk, so can we do this when you're sober?
elijah: alright, you want to fucking know? he called me from germany last month for about ten minutes.
elijah: you should've wrote us. i'd rather of gotten a goodbye, because if you didn't come back, you know how shitty i would've felt? knowing all that bull you had to go through just to prove something to your parents.
elijah: i love sabrina, i didn't fucking abandon her. it just fell apart. she's been through hell and back since you've been gone, you know? i've been trying to watch out for her, but i've got a nearly drug addicted sister and a family on the edge of falling to shreds. i don't know, most people write, why couldn't you?
elijah: that's why you should've stayed here. war fucks you up, we told you before you went. you're music is good enough to get you somewhere, and you're parents are deaf if they don't know that. i'm not gonna patronize you for going, but i'm gonna stand by and say it was the wrong choice.
elijah: i was in a coma for four months. i was... out for a run and hit by a car. i woke up about two weeks after you got back. so don't yell at me for not /talking/ to you when i was relearning how to walk. fuck, gabe. fuck you.
gabriel: And? He called you from Germany last month for a 10 minute talk. What'd he say? I can't read minds, Eli. You can't give me a vague explanation and think i'll understand what you're saying straight off the bat.
gabriel: but I couldn't. I didn't think you guys would want to hear from me. I didn't want to send a letter with an explanation with no letter sent back. It was easier thinking that you guys didn't want to hear from me because it was easier for me to focus on what I was doing so I could come back.
gabriel: Why do you keep saying that? That you guys have been through hell and back since I left? Why do you guys keep putting that on my shoulders when i've got pounds of demons already weighing in? Most people write, but most people usually know what they're getting into. You're giving me so much shit for not writing, but it's not like I received any letters for either of you either. I'm not the only one capable of writing and sending a letter.
gabriel: You've got family problems and Sabrina should've been there to help you deal with it. 50/50. Look out for each other.
gabriel: I know you two told me, but I had to make my parents proud of me just for at least once in my fucking life. You know my dad. You know how much he's not a fan of my music and I don't need him to be, but I need him to be proud of something. No matter how many time I tell you guys how much I hate him and don't need him, I need him to be proud. At least once he needs to be proud.
gabriel: Wait, you were in a coma for a hit and run? Y-you were in a c-coma for four months? I d-didnt. I didn't know. I'm sorry, I didn't know. I didn't know you were in a coma. Why didn't you tell me I was in a coma? When did the hit and run even happen? Why didn't Sabrina tell me?
*being in a drunken state sabrina picked up her phone to dial gabriel in a drunk fury. the phone rings for a second until finally a voice cracks on the other line.*
sabrina: knock knock?
sabrina: who's there?
sabrina: sabrina.
sabrina: sabrina who?
sabrina: sabrina the fucking friend who you fucking walked out on without saying a single goodbye too. that's fucking who.
