Actor Christopher Jackson goes from playing a Founding Father in "Hamilton" to style finder on "Bull."
How are you finding that balance between being on the show and being on "Hamilton" at the same time?
Scheduling is tricky. But fortunately my producers at "Hamilton" and my producers at "Bull" have been very patient and very understanding. CBS saw what we were doing at "Hamilton" and how important it was not only for the world at large, but for me personally. They they were interested in letting me continue that as long as I felt it was possible. "Hamilton" is something I've done for quite a while. When I walk through the door, I know what the process requires, and it requires a lot. It's just one of the best things I've ever done in my life. So while I'm not going to do it forever, it certainly is a very satisfying and fulfilling thing to be able to try to do good work on television and then go to Richard Rodgers [Theater] and try to climb that mountain again.
Are you still feeling good there? We saw some pretty big departures over the summer...
It's really, at this point, just about being able to do justice to the role with what I have in the tank. Right now my tank is pretty full, and when I feel like I'm not really able to perform at the level that has been established, then I'll move out of the way and let another fantastic artist come in and tell the story. That's the beautiful part about "Hamilton": It's not going anywhere and the enthusiasm that [people] have showed for it has kept us going quite a while. Right now, I'm just taking everything day by day.

Chris Jackson as George Washington.
Words canât really express how much I love George Washington in this musical and what an amazing job I think Chris Jackson has done with the character. He simply is George Washington. I love his voice and I love the layers to his character in both the lyrics and Chrisâs singing. Man, that man can sing.  I love from how the very beginning his character is so clear. A strong man, a dutiful man, a man who others look up to, whoâs incredibly aware of that fact and the position he takes in the eyes of his men and in the making of a new nation and perhaps somewhat reluctantly has accepted that position. Ned Stark, basically, but without some of his less brilliant moves.Â
âNow Iâm the model of a modern major general. The venerated Virginian whoâs men are all. Lining up, to put me up on a pedestal.â
But what I love most about George Washington here is the fact that, behind his strength and his sense of duty and honor, he is also only human, which is brilliantly layed out in those beautiful âCan I be real a second? For just a millisecond?â lines, where he drops his guard and lays his insecurities before us, showing that heâs just a man, who fears for the future of his men and his country. He is vulnerable in that moment, and completely real and relatable because of it. And I love that heâs a symbol of strength and masculinity and at the same time has that kind of honesty to him.Â
Because of all of the above, I donât often listen to One Last Time, because it makes me choke up and cry every time I do. After years and years of service, this man lets down all his guards and tells the world âIâve done enough. Let others finish what I started, what I set out to do. Youâll be fine.â And if thatâs not absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking, then I donât know what is. So, for the linework in this, I went with the outlines of a deerâs head and antlers (just like I did with Hercules Mulligan), to symbolize both his strength, righteousness and fortitude, but pushed aside to symbolize that heâs done enough and that heâs stepping down.Â

What a show! George Washington himself, Mr. Christopher Jackson (Hamilton, Holler If You Here Me, In The Heights, The Lion King) is in town for the TCAâs promoting his new CBS show BULL. He found time at the end of the night to chat with Utkarsh about their early days in Freestyle Love Supreme, playing the venerated viriginian veteran General George Washington in the Broadway/Global sensation that is Hamilton, balancing 8 shows a week as a husband and father of two, and Utkarsh gets real about his short lived stint as a member of the Hamilton Cast with the support and love of an old friend. These episodes are why this podcast exists. DO NOT MISS HISTORY BEING MADE. and donât hate on the sound. the hotel was too fancy to avoid room tone.
