EPCOT

Hanami is the booth in Japan and it always has long lines! This is one booth that often has registers on either side so if one line is long, check out the other side.
The first item on the menu is the Frushi: Fresh Pineapple, Strawberry and Melon Rolled with Raspberry Coconut Rice, Toasted Coconut, and Whipped Cream. I’ve heard mixed reviews on this item but it returns year after year. I haven’t tried it yet, but maybe this will be the year. the raspberry coconut rice sounds like it could be great!
There was a teriyaki curry chicken bun at the festival last year and this year there will be as well, but with some slight changes. The Chicken Edamame Bun: Steamed Bun filled with Chicken and Edamame and topped with Curry Sauce has the addition of edamame and curry sauce on top. Last year’s was inside and although not specified in the description, this one may be as well. I’m not a fan of curry so I’m hoping it’s just on top this year so I can get it without!
A brand new dish can be found here as well! The Beef Teriyaki Udon: Thin-sliced Beef, Onions and Noodles tossed on the grill with Soy and Ginger. I absolutely cannot wait to try this one! I tend to get full before I make it halfway around the World, but I’m definitely going to be saving room at some point for this dish this year!
This booth is always home to delicious drinks and I’m really looking forward to the first on the list. The available drinks are:
Yuzu Plum Wine Slushy: Sweet refreshing taste infused with the tangy flavor of Citrus
Suigei Sake: Bold flavor with a crisp, clean finish
Sapporo Draft Beer
Illuminations Monorail by Norm Lanier Via Flickr: A shot of Illuminations shot near the Journey Into Imagination.
Journey into the Sunset by Matthew Cooper Via Flickr: This is a shot I have done many many times now, especially at sunset. Each one seems to have a unique feel however thanks to the dynamic sunsets I’ve captured here over the years. While this shot is not the best sunset I’ve captured here I still really like it as its got a gorgeous glow to it. This was shot with the Nikon D810 and Nikon 14-24 2.8 at 24mm. I shot a bracket of 5 and used 2 exposures for my base blend and an additional shot for the monorail. I did a substantial amount of levels adjustments to this shot as I was trying to balance the sky and the foreground as well as possible while adding a bit of moodiness to the image. I used Nik Color Efex Pro Contrast to add a bit of pop. I did some mild color balancing and used a warming color filter to warm the image up overall. I used an Orton Effect on the foreground to add a bit of softness and finally bumped the saturation with a saturation adjustment layer along with sharpening. Did you know?
Epoct’s The Land pavilion welcomes Disney guests with two beautiful mosaics as representations of the layers of earth, exposed after a volcano eruption. Both sides are practically incidental with the exception of a few different colored tiles representing the artist’s simplistic signature (The birthstones of him and his children) for his works of art, as Disney artists and Imagineers are not allowed to sign their personal names on works featured at the parks.
Bonus Fact: As you make your way down the walkway of the pavilion, the pigment of the pavement will change colors, as meant to represent the creation of the earth as well. The red pigment is hot lava, and the black represents cooled lava.
Mission Space to the Stars by Matthew Cooper Via Flickr: The first few times I rode Mission Space I really enjoyed it. As time passed however the ride has become really stale to me, to the point I don’t even bother riding it when we visit anymore. Tack on that I still really really REALLY miss Horizons and overall I’m just not very happy with Mission Space. I’d be up for a replacement but honestly there are way too many other things in Epcot that need attention before Mission Space that it seems almost pointless to imagine. This was shot with the Nikon D810 and Nikon 14-24 2.8. I did a 5 shot bracket of which I used 3 shots. I used a single 3 second exposure as my base and then an underexposure to mask in for the rocket trail to get the nice deep red color as opposed to the washed out color you get here with longer exposures. The real challenge editing this shot came from the sky however. The longer shot I originally hoped to use for the sky was a real mess from all kinds of crazy flaring on the 14-24. I didn’t want to leave the sky black as I would lose my stars and the cool glow from the sign which I felt ultimately made it a weaker image. Ultimately so that I didn’t lose stars from cleanup I extracted all the stars to a separate layer before beginning cleanup of the sky using patching, healing, and cloning to get it nice and smooth. Once the sky was cleaned up to my satisfaction I then merged the stars back to the layer. Doing this allowed me to clean the sky up without removing or accidentally duplicating any of the stars. A total pain, but worth it I think. Japan Illuminations Ultra Wide 172 Seconds by Matthew Cooper Via Flickr: I have shot from this location many times as I know many other photographers have. It’s kinda the go to location for great Illuminations shots. I’ve never shot it with my Nikon 14-24 however as I usually prefer to shoot with an ND filter and I’ve never had one for that lens until this trip. As I mentioned previously this day had been a major bust for photography outside and so around 7:30, just to be safe, and because I was tired anyway I went ahead and headed to Teppan Edo to setup for the shot. Fortunately there was no one there and I was able to setup and relax for a bit and just take in the atmosphere here… as well as watch the radar in hopes of an epic down pour for shooting later that night. What I really liked about using the 14-24 here is the ability to include the Pagoda on the far right. In the past I’ve shot my Nikon 24-70 from here and featured the Torii gate alone. I really think this wider view is the best of all the ones I’ve done as there’s something interesting to look at across virtually the entire frame. A quick bit of technical info. As mentioned this was with the 14-24 2.8 and I used the Pro Grey filter system to attach an ND to the 14-24. I used a 7 stop ND for this show. The exposure was 172 seconds at F8. Enjoy, happy fireworks Friday and have a great weekend everyone! TheTimeTheSpace - My Portfolio | Facebook | Tumblr | Instagram | Twitter | www.travelnoob.net | Institute of Disney Photography
