Music Spotlight: Oh Wonder
UK-based indie pop duo Oh Wonder just released their third studio album, No One Else Can Wear Your Crown, and through their music, Josephine and Anthony want you to know just that – there’s only one you. For years, the band has perfectly captured a wide range of emotions and universal messages that have resonated deeply with fans around the world. Get to know the brains behind the music below, as part of our Spotlight series.
Tell us about your new album, No One Else Can Wear Your Crown, and what you hope people take away from it.
We made this album of 10 songs at home in London, and everything was written and recorded by us in our studio at the end of the garden. The songs explore themes of self-empowerment, defiance, our relationship and feeling both unstoppable and desperately sad at the same time.
If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
Anthony would be an architect with a coffee shop on the side, and Josephine would be sat at home watching re-runs of Grey’s Anatomy. Or a lawyer.
What is your songwriting process like? Has this process changed for you since your previous work?
Our process has stayed the same - we write at a piano, and come up with chords, melodies and then finally lyrics. Although sometimes it just all pours out at the same time.
What song(s) are you currently playing on repeat?
‘Twist’ by Dizzy, ‘not ur friend’ by Jeremy Zucker, 'Bikini Porn’ by Tove Lo and 'Garden Song’ by Phoebe Bridgers.
In your opinion, what’s the most interesting thing about you that people may not know?
Josephine: I have never had a fizzy drink because I’m scared of the bubbles (Coca Cola, Fanta etc)
Anthony: I am really good at latte art but have never had a flat white in my life.
