I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of The Providence of Fire about a month and a half before its release, and I just barely managed to muster up a review in time for its book birthday. This is one of those books that gave me a LOT of feels, so much so that it was physically difficult to put them into words before dissolving into a puddle of oh my god this book was so excellent it kills me the characters are my babies. To give a brief summary: the emperor is still dead and his three children – Valyn, Kaden and Adare – are still scattered, disunited and struggling to save their empire from...
Finally wrote a review for The Providence of Fire! It's horribly long, like the essay I really should by writing but am currently putting off, and it's a testament to how this book made me feel ALL OF THE EMOTIONS.

On the left, we have the UK cover and that’s the US cover to the right. As usual, the US cover is a little more elaborate with characters standing dramatically like they’re posing for an HBO TV series, while the UK cover is more simple and understated and a little...
Bringing this back because the UK cover for The Providence of Fire is officially out!
So remember how I said I liked the US cover for The Emperor's Blades better and I was jealous of all you American fans? Well:
Isn't it gorgeous? It certainly beats out the US cover in my book. (Sorry, US cover! It's not you, it's me.) Just... the colours, the fire, the sword.... the hands! What's with the tattoos? They look like henna. Brian announced on Twitter that it's Adare on this cover, just like on the US one.
(Which raises the question, who was on the UK cover for Blades? He had a sword, so I'm assuming Valyn?)
So are the markings a sign of Intarra's blessing? Or am i getting ahead of myself? So many questions! Bottom line, I can't wait to get my hands on this beauty.
I'm proud to say that the TV Tropes page for the Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne is finally up! It took me a while and it still needs a bit of work, but it's there! Go frolic through it, or contribute, and remember - TV Tropes will eat up half your day and spit you out, blinking and dazed.
Cover comparison time!
On the left, we have the UK cover and that's the US cover to the right. As usual, the US cover is a little more elaborate with characters standing dramatically like they're posing for an HBO TV series, while the UK cover is more simple and understated and a little generic so it could probably be used for any fantasy novel featuring a guy with ghostly white skin holding a sword and a couple of snakes.
I have the UK cover, which is a source of great anguish for me. Sometimes, US covers come across as a little cheesy (think fantasy book covers from the 80's) but in this case I ABSOLUTELY ADORE the US cover.
I mean, come on - the colours? The mountains and the kettral in the background? THE CHARACTERS? They all look so badass and perfect - if, okay, a little older than they should, also Kaden's Shin robes are a little less simple than they're described to be and Valyn has long hair and what looks like a beard.... But if you ignore the little inaccuracies - which I do - then it's a truly glorious cover. It just captures the essence of the book: the fantasy, the sense of mysteriousness, a little bit of desolation, and the three siblings standing together, with Valyn and Adare flanking the new emperor Kaden. It's probably my favourite cover aware and if I ever find a cheap edition I'd probably just by a second copy purely for that cover.
(But, of course, the UK cover's great too. Very pretty. I love the colours, and the sword is a very haunting image. Don't feel bad, UK cover!)
Aaaand here's the US cover for The Providence of Fire:
It doesn't beat the first book's cover, but it's still beautiful. I love the colours and the setting and the statue and Adare! Being badass! Apparently that scene's in the book too! Which is awesome, because I was totally expecting a moment in the first book where Valyn, Kaden and Adare pose dramatically with a kettral....
I wonder what the UK cover for Providence - the one I'll inevitably be buying - will be like? Hope we find out soon!
So Brian posted the prologue for The Providence of Fire! But before you get too excited, it looks like this:
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Here's what I think:
* Kaden, Valyn and Adare are all mentioned in the prologue, but it's highly unlikely they're all together at this point in the book. So, either some or all of them are just mentioned and not present, OR
* Flashback! I read in one of the ARC reviews that we learn more about Sanlitun and his relationship with his kids. So what if the Prologue is a flashback to when they were kids, possibly when Valyn and Kaden were being sent away?
* Also, what the heck is Sioan? Because it seems like that word shows up an awful lot in the prologue. Is it a place? Doesn't sound like any of the place names we've heard - a bit too West European instead of Asian. A person then? My theory:
* I read in an interview (yeah, that's me, too much time on my hands) that we're going to learn more about the late Empress in this book, and that she was pissed off about being married off to Sanlitun, so she rebelled by giving her kids names that didn't fit the Malkeenian name scheme. Valyn, Kaden and Adare all have Western sounding names, so it makes sense that their mom did too. So I'm predicting that this Sioan is Mama Malkeenian, the Empress of Annur - and the prologue might possibly be in her point of view. How sad is that?
(Of course, I might be completely, totally off, but hey, that's the fun in theorising, right? :P )
* No other proper nouns besides these four names, 'Kettral', 'Annur' and... 'Anlatun's'? Sounds like an emperor's name. An ancestor or Sanlitun's predecessor? So that means no other known characters show up.
* Other notable words: 'father', 'burning', 'burn', 'Spear' (so they're in the Dawn Palace?), 'children' occurs quite a lot, and 'husband' - which supports my theory that Valyn, Adare and Kaden's mother might be somewhere in the prologue. Only thing missing is 'mother', but that might be too obvious. Hmm....
Oh well, 3 months before I find out if I'm right! What do the rest of you think?
