Happy 115th birthday, Frank Faylen! (December 8, 1905- August 2, 1985)
to make this gifset, I rewatched a lot of Herbert scenes and really got to appreciate all that Frank brought to this series. especially in the early episodes, Herbert functions as the main antagonist to Dobie, but I think he’s a character that’s full of contradictions. the character does certainly have a rough exterior, and maintains that throughout the show, but his relationship with Winnie is so touching and sweet and there are so many moments of genuine care towards Dobie (and Maynard), and moments of Herbert’s own reflections on his growing up and sacrifice and insecurity that add so many layers to the character. Herbert was really able to add an emotional dimension and resonance to the show. For a television show that was among the first to depict strife and disconnect between the generations, Max Shulman did an amazing job making both generations sympathetic.
I know this is Dobie Gillis, but I really think that Herbert is the most complex character on the show, and Frank Faylen did an amazing job in making a character that could be one-note into a rounded person. He was incredibly skilled in comedy and physical humor, and was able to pull off the more tender scenes with humor and heart. The show was definitely better for having him on the cast.
