There is a – as of this moment – 11k note post by @princessbubblegumandjustice that lists an evil and disgusting community of abusers that are sharing disturbing images concerning children. I have just been privately made aware of it.

(Yes, I am avoiding specific terms that others may have blacklisted so as many people as possible see it. I apologise, but I don’t know what else to do.)

I am not going to link the post, and will now explain why.

Bubblegum, as far as I’m aware, is a good person trying to do a very good thing, and I in no way am hating her in the slightest. I think that she’s a good person, but she has made a terrible, terrible (and totally accidental) mistake.

The list that she has compiled is excellent so that the authorities can investigate.

The list that she shared to Tumblr is dangerous.

I am not kidding.

Any predatory individual that is looking for CP has to do nothing but remember one of those urls, go to a public library, use a free proxy site, and from there, will be able to contact someone to access images. Without being traced.

It looks like a good idea, but whilst good people are trying to spread what they think is right, predators can use that list to abuse and spread more abuse.

The list needs to be saved in private so that the authorities can investigate and make arrests. The list needs to be eradicated from the public sphere to protect children and to stop predators from using it as a tool to spread and share in more abuse.

Please, please delete any reblogs of that post. Remove that post.

I’m not ace myself, so I’m coming at the whole acephobia thing from an outsider’s perspective, and as such, it’s not my place to speak to the experience of those on the receiving end of it.

However, as a bisexual dude, I can observe that many of the arguments that are employed to establish that ace folks have no place in the queer community are strikingly similar - indeed, at times practically word-for-word identical - to the arguments that were for many years (and in some circles still are) employed to establish that bisexual folks have no place in the queer community.

It’s enough to make a guy suspicious on general principle, you know?

I’ve gotten a few messages asking for (well, in some cases more “demanding”) elaboration, so: here are a few of the primary areas in which I’ve observed that arguments against bi inclusion and arguments against ace inclusion tend to exhibit significant overlap. There may well be others - these are simply the ones I’ve run into most frequently.

The Passing Argument

It has been argued that bisexual folks don’t have any grounds to complain about discrimination and violence suffered in relation to their orientation, because a bisexual person is able to pass as straight simply by choosing partners of the appropriate gender. Therefore, any discrimination and violence that a bisexual person does experience must be construed as voluntarily undertaken, since they could have passed, and freely chose not to.

This argument is similarly applied to ace folks via the assertion that being ace poses no particular barrier to seeking a partner of a socially acceptable gender, so any failure to do so must likewise be construed as voluntary.

The Performativity Argument

It has been argued that bisexual folks ought to be excluded from queer communities because sexual orientation is purely performative; i.e., being gay is defined in terms of currently having a sexual partner of the same gender.  A bisexual person who has a partner of a different gender is functionally indistinguishable from a straight person, and must therefore be regarded as straight. Conversely, a bisexual person whose current partner is of the same gender must nonetheless be regarded with suspicion, because they could “turn straight” at any time simply by leaving that partner.

This argument is similarly applied to ace folks via the assertion that their orientation has no discernible performative component; an ace person is functionally indistinguishable from a straight person who simply isn’t involved in a sexual relationship at that particular moment, so ace folks must therefore be regarded as straight by default.

(An astute reader may notice that the passing argument dovetails neatly into the performativity argument: those who choose not to seek partners of a socially acceptable gender may be dismissed because any violence and discrimination they experience is a consequence of their voluntary failure to pass, while those who do seek such partners are performatively straight and therefore to be shunned. It’s a neat little system.)

The Mistaken Identity Argument

It has been argued that, while bisexual folks may suffer discrimination and physical and sexual violence, they’re not targeted by such acts because they’re bisexual. Any discrimination and violence a bisexual person suffers in relation to their orientation is suffered because they were mistaken for a gay person. Any effort on their part to discuss such experiences is therefore to be regarded as appropriative, in spite of the fact that they personally experienced it. In short, a bisexual person’s own experience of violence and discrimination doesn’t truly “belong” to them: it “belongs” to the purely hypothetical gay person their persecutors allegedly mistook them for.

This argument is applied to ace folks practically verbatim - no particular adaptation is necessary.

I’ll add The Contribution Argument, which involves one of these gatekeeping behaviors:

1) rewriting history to erase bisexual and asexual contributions to political LGBTQ rights movements, and then claiming that bisexuals and asexuals have never done anything for the community at large

2) arguing that modernday bisexuals and asexuals should be excluded from current political movements because our goals are distinct from, or even contradictory to the goals of the LGBTQ rights movement at large

3) interpreting any attempt on the part of bi/asexuals to make safe spaces for ourselves within the community as an attack on LG safe spaces, generally by reframing bi/ace pride as homo/lesbophobia, or by dismissing accusations of bi/acephobia as inherently homo/lesbophobic

In other words, arguing that bisexuals and asexuals, rather than being contributing members of the community, are parasites on the community, leeching from, and undermining the community and its goals.

The Contribution Argument is an interesting one because it goes way beyond popular biphobia.

It’s often been asserted that bisexual folks ought to be excluded from the LG community because that community is specifically for folks who experience homophobia, and bisexual folks don’t experience homophobia, save by misidentification. (See the Mistaken Identity Argument, above.)

However, anybody who’s over the age of 30 can tell you that the positioning of the experience of homophobia as the community’s great unifier is, itself, a relatively novel development.

Up until quite recently (and by “recently” I mean as recently as the mid 1980s), even lesbians were routinely characterised by the leaders of mainstream gay rights activism as unwelcome parasites, riding on the movement’s coattails and contributing nothing in return.

Not only is identifying the experience of homophobia - defined narrowly as discrimination against those who are actively involved in sexual relationships with persons of the same gender - as the sole qualifier for inclusion a totally arbitrary place to draw the line, it’s baldly ahistorical.

Historically, a great many folks who do experience this type of homophobia have routinely been left out in the cold by mainstream activism for gender and sexual minorities - and the Contribution Argument, as you’ve outlined it here, is one of the primary tools that’s been used to justify that exclusion.

Also the idea that you have to have the consistent ability to perform your sexual orientation on a daily basis in order to be oppressed enough to be welcomed into the exclusive “gay club” is pretty shitty. My favorite thing about ace discourse is that multiple well known, helpful, LGBT groups such as the Trevor Project, GLMA, National LGBTQ Task Force, GLSEN and PFLAG recognize and accept Asexuals as part of the community. These are groups that actively work to make people within the lgbt+ community have better lives. And they accept Asexuals.

Why TME Ace Exclusionists Are Especially Susceptible To TERF Recruitment Tactics

first of all, check out this (x) post first. it’s required reading.  when you want to indoctrinate someone into an ideology they find repulsive, the first thing you do is introduce them to the themes of that ideology but package it in a way that they’ll accept.  we’ll call the person being groomed to accept TERF ideology the “mark”. con man terminology seems fitting. 

If you want to turn them against a group they currently want to protect (we’ll call this group A), then you need to first introduce them to all the arguments you’ll use to demonize group A in a setting where they’ll be open to accepting these arguments.  the easiest way to do this is to use these same arguments and tactics to demonize another group that your mark feels neutral/volatile toward, and we’ll call this group B. keep the tactics the same, keep your means of propaganda the same- but pick an acceptable target. a target that won’t make your mark feel a defensive gut reaction like they would if you attacked group A off the bat.  as long as you convince your mark that your reasons for despising group B are valid, then if you play your cards right and indoctrinate them deeply enough into hating group B, they’ll be far more open to accepting your ideology when you say that group A is evil for the same reasons as group B. this is propaganda, cult mentality, and scapegoating 101.  but the most important factor in this is making sure all of your arguments used against group B are nearly identical to those used against group A. You slowly get your mark to recognize these arguments as totally logical and valid reasons to despise a group of people, so that when you reveal that group A supposedly shares those traits with group B, your mark won’t be able to claim that your hatred of group A is wrong without also admitting their hatred of group B was also wrong. and at this point, your mark will be so deeply entrenched in a hatred for group B that their pride and anger won’t allow them to admit that their hatred isn’t grounded in logic.  they’ll declare group A to be their enemy sooner than they’ll swallow their pride and admit they were wrong to hate group B.  this is why TERF’s are almost exclusively ace exclusionists, and why there’s screenshots floating around of TERFs admitting that ace exclusionism helped them “realize” that TERF ideology was “right”.  “WORDS MEAN DIFFERENT THINGS WHEN YOU CHANGE THEM, SO IT DOESN’T MATTER IF ACE EXCLUSIONIST RHETORIC READS JUST LIKE TERF RHETORIC BUT WITH 'TRANSGENDER’ SWITCHED WITH 'ASEXUAL’!” The fact that TERFs and acephobes used the same arguments couldn’t be more relevant, because you’re being groomed to accept these arguments as being logical so that you’ll be susceptible to recruitment when you see the same argumentative points coming from TERFs.

I’ve read some things about nazi/white supremacist recruitment using a similar, though not identical, modus operandi too. Start with something that sounds reasonable to the subject, show sympathy with their isolation and misery, then upgrade the level of hate and expand the target lists. There are large numbers of people at the footsoldier level of white supremacist gangs who will say that they aren’t racist and some of them think they mean it.

When I was younger I did a lot of talking to random people in bars and coffee shops. Here and there I’d run into American white supremacists who’d make a big show of being earnestly ok with my pale Jewish ass, since antisemitism wasn’t “in” then and maybe they could sell me a line about how it’s not fair that black people want special treatment, right?

Thinking about those conversations creeps me out more with every passing year. Because I think about how they could make themselves seem - if not harmless, a minor nuisance, a racist uncle who simply didn’t understand things the way I did. Like non-terrible people who were just wrong about a thing or two.

And I think about the feeling of being courted, the specific way they put a face on for the valuable outsider, like they were trying to win me as a human trading card, because they really want to be able to say: see, that person is cool with us, we can’t be that bad. And how impeccably they treat their pawns, Milo and that ilk, to keep those endorsements close, all the while laughing up their sleeves about them.

As someone who isn’t ace, and is a member of the LGBT+ community, I completely agree. Who gets to decide who’s in the community or isn’t? Sure, you don’t have to agree that it makes someone inherently LGBT+, but I see people, on both sides of the argument I might add, being extremely hateful, all over what? Actually, toddlers are more well behaved. It’s gross. As I said, I’m personally not asexual, I’m trans and questioning my sexuality, but I know I like girls, but my best friend is asexual and maybe aromantic, and I’ve seen her struggle with it, I’ve seen her face discrimination, maybe not that kind a trans or gay person will, but that’s because they’re different! Especially seeing people go onto posts and make it about discourse when it isn’t about discourse, just leave it alone! I think we all just need to sit down and drink some calm juice and move on, aces aren’t stealing my resources, aces aren’t getting in the way of anything, I don’t even know how this “discourse” even started?? We went from having all these different identities and all respecting each other, to like, no this isn’t LGBT+ because I say so or this IS LGBT+ because I say so, and it’s like, when did we elect presidents of the community? And when did debating turn into riots?

Hypersexuality is often a result of trauma, typically sexual, and says nothing about who you are attracted to. Literally, all it is is frequent or suddenly increased libido. It has nothing to do with whether or not you experience sexual attraction to another person.

So, yes, you can be hypersexual and ace.

Pride month is for all people. Not just lesbians, not just gay people, not just transgender people, not just bisexual people, not just for anyone. It’s for everyone in the LGBTQA+ community.

Yeah but have you considered lesbians deserve to celebrate their pride too? Because that’s what pride month is. For each group of the community to celebrate their pride. And since I’m a lesbian, I’m allowed to say I’m proud of myself and my community.

Also, this post is for lesbians and nobody else. Not for trans men, not for gay men, not for asexuals, not for anybody but people who are lesbians (yes that includes trans and non-binary lesbians). Don’t get your panties in a twist because a positivity post is specifically for one group of people.

Actually a better analogy would be you taking a month that is designated a celebration for black positivity and saying “Happy Vitiligo Month!,” and some other black person says “Yo, could you maybe not exclude us from our own celebration month” and you stubbornly insisting that people with Vitiligo deserve their own positivity (which they do), therefore taking over said black positivity month is within your rights, then getting angry at anyone who objects about you appropriating said black positivity month by saying the post is specifically for people with Vitiligo, not for any other black person.
