Want one real bad.
Also, script emulating a Tandy floppy drive makes me smile.
Some tape samples sent through my newly completed feedback box. One plate reverb loop, two delay loops, and lots of signal routing.
Feedback Mixer
Finally finished my feedback box. It's a passive resistance based 3x3 matrix, I wish I could have gone with more outputs, but I maxed out the scratch and dent aluminum enclosure already. In fact, getting everything to fit inside was the actual challenge--it doesn't look crammed from the outside, but I had to shave down several components.
See above for a sound sample.
Thoughts on source materials
My favorite source is the second hand tape. There is no greater mystery than an unmarked cassette sitting in the thrift store box. It could just be poorly recorded top 40 radio, but sometimes it renders the ultimate one of a kind find. Many collectors often speak of a recording's rarity, "I've been searching for this for years, there were only 1000 pressing ever made", but this tape is a singularity it will never exist again. Yet its rarity is not the true measure of the recording's worth, for there have been countless performances never recorded. Josh Davis (aka Dj Shadow), an artist driven by sampling, has said that old records are the broken dreams of failed artist and spoke about the inherent beauty in his music's repurposing of derelict 45s. A good tape goes so far beyond gilded dreams of fame and success. I was lucky enough to find a fisher price boombox with the original tape inside. This tape has a cheesy set of children's sing along songs, but has a blank b-side with printed instructions 'record you world of sounds". As I play the tape back I am with these children in their furniture cushion fort and world of make-believe. There is something infinitely more intimate about their play, their thoughts, and dreams. It is so raw and powerful, never intended to listened to, not filtered through a production studio and polished down into little folded 3 minute origami. This beauty is why I seek those lost and unmarked artifacts--promises of natural uncut diamonds buried in dead technology.
Good news everyone
Anyone following me who is into circuits and doesn't already sample, hear this. Many companies (like TI, Maxim, National, etc) will send you samples of the ic or microcontrollers they manufacture. They won't give you the high end bits, but a lot can be done and as many as 15 components a month sounds great when you're broke.
a digging little critter
sorry for high noise in recording. i assure you it sounds much clearer when over your bed at 3am

Heh.
Noticed it here.
Nighty Nighty...
sorry for long period of no updates, moving/other business. here's bent furby
This is a teaser sample of a kid's nightlight type device. Haven't modded it at all yet, but just switching out one of the dead batteries produced these great power drained results, and promises of interesting bend possibilities.
