Sal could only gape in awe and a little bit of terror as she smiled at him and murmured that simple, yet telling, confession.
“You… you’re joking, right?” He said with a little chuckle, eyeing her and his surroundings very warily. Sal wasn’t an idiot, and if this interaction went sour it would be good to have an escape route on this island. “Ahaha… that joke’s not really too funny, Wadda…”
Wadanohara didn’t blink, her small smile still plastered on her face.
“I’m not joking, Sal.” She said lightly, not even phased by the look of absolute terror on his face.
“…You… You’re not?” Sal stumbled back a bit, trying to distance himself from the enigmatic sea witch. He ended up stumbling on an oddly uneven rock and falling straight on his posterior, letting out a sharp cry of pain.
Wadanohara giggled and held out a hand.
“There’s no need to be afraid, silly!” She beamed, gripping onto Sal and pulling him up with a surprising amount of strength. “I’m not gonna hurt you or mostly anyone!”
Sal blanched.
Not gonna hurt anyone? The Sea of Death would literally hurt everyone!
Though, she must’ve seen the confusion and frustration on his face as she frowned slightly.
“Please, let me explain all of this.” She said, dusting off his sleeves. “It’s not as straightforward as you might think, and I promise this isn’t out of evil intentions.”
Sal… could hardly believe that. He could hardly believe Wadanohara was involved with such evil, or that she had been betraying all of them all this time. That she’d been lying all these years and that she truly was the daughter of the Great Sorcerer. He couldn’t believe a word that she said right here and right now, but disbelief couldn’t dispel the feelings he had accrued over many years.
So, he nodded, tried to slow his heartbeat, and waited for Wadanohara to speak.
She smiled in return and uttered a very bright “thanks”.
“Now, as I was saying, yes, I am working for The Sea of Death as an Ambassador and true, The Sea of Death Plans to conquer the Blue Sea.” She continued. “But, truth be told, I won’t let them.”
“What do you mean?” Sal asked, slightly tilting his head.
She giggled once more and replied, “Oh, silly! Princess Mikotsu is an absolute idiot. I don’t think she’d be able to fix a paper cut, much less a kingdom.”
Sal blinked in shock.
He was very unused to Wadanohara talking badly about anyone like this, and he wasn’t sure he liked this new change that much.
“That being said, Uomi is also incompetent.” She continued, despite Sal’s silent disapproval at her blunt and hurtful words. “Did you know she’s not even awake right now? That she has to stay asleep to keep her moronic sister at bay?”
He didn’t know how to reply, so he just shook his head.
“No? I figured not.” She said, a kind of disdainful look in her eyes. “Both of these kingdoms are based off of lies and petty rivalries bred from a cruel and incompetent sea king. I don’t care for a blue sea and I definitely don’t care for a red one.”
“Then… why work for one or the other?” Sal asked, confused by the sea witch’s words. “You seem to hate both of them equally.”
She laughed again, the same comforting smile pulled up on her lips. Only, it brought Sal no comfort anymore.
“I don’t hate them, Sal.” She said cheerily. “I just think both of them need to be fixed.”
He could only guess as to what that meant, but either way, the thought brought him no respite. What could she mean by “fixing” them, and how would she even be able to achieve that? The Sea of Death was representative of… death. You can’t just fix death!
“You see, I brought you here, near the sacred sword, because I have something much more important to tell you.” Wadda replied, gently placing a hand on Sal’s pale cheek.
Sal silently gasped, his face flushing considerably at her soft touch, and while he couldn’t bring himself to remove it, he swiftly looked away from her gaze.
She let out a quiet chuckle and gently grasped his cheeks to turn his face back to hers.
“I love you, Sal.” She confessed, then stood up on her tip toes, and planted a kiss onto Sal’s lips.
Despite how much he wanted to pull away, deny her affections because surely, surely, they must be lies. She must be manipulating him, or there’s no way she could prefer the weak and cowardly Sal over the brave and strong Samekichi. Yet… she was kissing him. She held his face so tenderly in her own two hands, and her eyes fluttered closed, seeming to be completely enthralled and truly trusting him at this moment.
So, out of pure adoration and hope that she was being genuine, he closed his eyes and let himself relax at her touch.
Eventually, after what seemed like a blissful eternity, she pulled away, leaving Sal slightly breathless.
“I trust you with my life, Sal. Even if I hate these two seas, I want you to remain the same.” She said while stroking his hair, a look of pure admiration on her face. “That’s why I want you to not only be my familiar, not only my accomplice, but also my lover.”
Sal gasped again, thinking that at this point he must seem like a wordless idiot to her, but she didn’t seem to be phased by his shock.
“A-Accomplice?” He stuttered, holding her close to him. “What do you mean? Accomplice to what?”
She gently slid her hands down to his own, and she pulled him closer, snuggling into his body and resting her small head onto his shoulder.
“For my plan to work, I need to be more powerful.” She explained, her soft whispers sending shivers to Sal’s body. “To become more powerful often takes time and resources that we don’t have. That’s why, I’ve discovered a new way to earn it.”
She pulled away slightly, just enough for Sal to see her face, but this time she looked pensive and much more serious than she had before. It sent shivers down his spine, and not the good kind.
“Do you truly wish to know?” She asked. “What I plan to do? If I tell you, you can never speak of this with anyone, even those you’re closest to.”
Sal couldn’t really answer that.
Couldn’t tell anyone? Tatsumiya, Samekichi, Uomi (or that fish servant, he never remembered the name of)… No one could know?
It scared him as to what it could be.
But… he didn’t want to let Wadanohara down.
“I… I don’t want to know.” He replied, and Wadanohara frowned slightly. She seemed very disappointed, and maybe slightly upset but she didn’t say anything to show it.
“-But,” He continued. “I’ll still help you.”
Wadanohara couldn’t hold back her grin.
“Good.” She replied, holding him tightly. “Then just bring a living being over here every week. Be discreet about it and if you’re seen with them, then bring me someone else you weren’t seen with. I’ll take them in here, so the barrier should let them in and… you should let me worry about the rest, my Sal.”
Sal nodded, feeling slightly drowsy.
“I can trust you to do this for me… for our future, right?”
“Of course.” Sal replied dreamily.
Wadanohara smiled a very sharp and wide grin. Her sky gray eyes slowly fading to a murky black.
“I love you, Sal.” She said once more. “I’m so happy you love me too.”
It was only one moment, but Sal’s sea blue eyes faded to a murky black as well.
Two demons from a different world was definitely unusual, especially with such a big personality change between the two. Kurotsuno was used a dark place without forgiveness, while Yosafire was used to a cheerful place with pretty much the opposite of the pitch black world.
Upon arriving in the grey world the black horned demon was quickly introduced to the one horned one. She thought to herself not to bring it up.
The two were just sitting in the garden together, before Kurotsuno thought of raising her voice. “Why are they standing up like this? Aren’t they supposed to be rotten down?”
Yosafire almost gasped a little bit. “You’ve never seen an alive flower before?” Kurotsuno shook her head.
“Man I feel bad for you, must be horrible!” Yosafire added after the nod. She thought for a moment before shining up, seemingly getting an idea. She plucked a flower from the ground and handed it to Kurotsuno. The black horned demon looking confused before Yosafire talked after a good minute of silance.
“… I forgot what I was gonna say” Yosafire chuckled to herself, Kurotsuno smiled a little. Who knew two people of the same race could be so different?
She took the flower and looked at it. “I’ll take care of it, I hope it’ll survive long enough in my world so I can show… Him”
Yosafire looked curious after she ended it like that, but didn’t bring it up thinking it might be a sensitive topic. But she smiled back at Kurotsuno. Kurotsuno was almost stunned for a moment, she never knew the feeling of having a genuine friend like this before. It was a nice change of pace.
