Decided i needed a new introduction post!

Hi! Im Gemma! Im 29, and I live in NZ. I love all things books and book related. So that's what you will mostly see on my blog. I also post some posts about my weight loss and health journey, but i do try not to post too much.

My favorite books are TheNight Circus and The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. I love the magical realism and the whimsy. Im always looking for more books like them. I also love The Bodyguard by Katherine Center. Hands down the best romance I have ever read.

I've just started a commonplace book for when I read a book where I can jott down all my notes I have on it.

Tell me why im around 36% of the way into The Cheat Sheet, and I have half a page of notes? Apparently, I have a lot of thoughts already. Hopefully, having all my thoughts written down in a notebook will help me write better reviews.

Unsure how I feel about novels with reimagined backstories for real-life historical individuals/events. But this was an okay read anyway. I suppose I'm making The Scarlet Letter my next read!! Other than reading, I worked on my commonplace this weekend. Also dusted out my shelves because Spring!! 🌷🌞

Im now wondering if I should go ahead with my hysterectomy and endo surgery in August. I feel like my brain is gaslighting me into thinking it's not that bad and that I dont have Endo anymore since my last endo surgery 10 years ago.

It's so hard. Im in pain when I ovulate in my back and every month when I get my period. It's so bad im on medication for the pain.

I wish I could see inside my body to know if I need surgery. But I can't. I feel like crying about it. It would be good to get rid of my uterus and not have a period anymore. I mean, I dont want kids anyway. So what the point?

I just dont want to have surgery that's deemed unnecessary. Some months im crying in pain, and the bleeding can get really heavy. But then again, it's gone within 4 days, sometimes 3. I did, however, in 2019, have a 5 month period. It was hell. And I have adenomyosis, too. I feel so sick thinking about it, and I want to cry. What the actual fuck do I do?

I want to start writing more books reviews on here. I also want to write better reviews. Something mkre indepth, but im unsure how. Does anyone have any advice?

if the seven husbands of evelyn hugo adaptation is bad i'm going to be devastated

upon looking into the adaptation i've seen that TJR has been accused of being pro-israel and that her black and latinx characters are written without care or proper representation (this is pretty obvious with evelyn in my opinion)

this article explains both of the above claims and personally i don't feel comfortable supporting her so i'll not be posting about the film adaptation or her books anymore!

Never thought I'd say this, but I just want my period to make its appearance. The anticipation is really doing my head in, and I feel awful. I have around 3-4 periods to get through before my scheduled hysterectomy in late August. Something doesn't feel right because I dont have my period. Maybe that's why im feeling really down and moody?!

Me, reading the first 80% of the post: What do you mean, "experience it firsthand"? How am I supposed to join the Hunger Games or go the Odyssey?

Me, reading the final clause of the post: Oh, you literally meant that people have to read the book/listen to the audiobook in order to fully understand it. And people got mad. Oh dear.

And this doesn't mean you need to read / watch / listen to absolutely everything! (not that that's remotely possible)

It's perfectly reasonable that I have decided, based on ambient cultural information, that Ready Player One will not be my jam and I'm not going to read it. What that means, though, is that I have very little information about Ready Player One. I am not an authority on Ready Player One. If there's a discussion of the character development or worldbuilding or plot structure in Ready Player One, I can listen, but I can't really contribute, because I have not read it and thus am missing quite a lot of information about it.

There are more things in the world that I am not an authority on than there are things that I am an authority on, and that's okay! I should just be honest with myself and others about it.

Open up Gail Crowther's new bestseller Marilyn and Her Books (now available in the U.S.) and the first thing you'll see are some of the editions Marilyn owned. I was thrilled to see she had a penchant for my beloved Modern Library books, which I'm used to thinking of as "vintage," but they were contemporary for her. And I actually own most of the editions she had.

I've been reading the book (I'm about a third of the way through), and it's beautifully written and absolutely fascinating. This is a perfect read for ALL book lovers, not just those who appreciate Marilyn Monroe. It speaks to us as readers, delving into things like: what the books we own and read say about us (as well as the books we don't read); shelf-snooping--something we're all guilty of; books we read vs. books we skim; books we bought versus books we received as gifts; and so much more.

I'd say it's the best book about books/reading since Maureen Corrigan's So We Read On (about The Great Gatsby), but Crowther's book is better.

I'm definitely thinking of reading this! While I don't know much about Marilyn Monroe, the one thing I do know about her is how much she loved to read and that she had a LOT of books! So when I heard this was coming out, I was excited to be able to read more about her and to learn more about her love of reading and books!

Just checked out the audiobook for it from my local library, so I'll be able to start listening to in on my commute to and from work. Excited to learn more about a fellow bookwork!
