'el jaleo,' oil on canvas, 239.4 x 348 cm; john singer sargent, american c. 1882.
We need real journalism and an independent press. Language matters.
Valid question.
Sargent painted the two watercolors known as "Tommies Bathing" in the summer of 1918. He had been commissioned by the British government for a painting that would commemorate the efforts of the Americans and British in World War I, so he traveled to the front in the valley of the Somme to find a subject. During his sojourn, he painted several studies and unrelated informal watercolors, including these two evocative images. - Gods and Foolish Grandeur
John Singer Sargent, 'Tommies Bathing' - studies, watercolour (1918).
Richard Gerstl, photo in his studio (c. 1905) and a self portrait, 1907.
On November 4, 1908, Gerstl—who had recently turned twenty-five—removed his clothes, strung a noose above a full-length mirror, and hanged himself while stabbing his chest with a knife.
