Water bear survival strategy unravelled

Water bears survive all sorts of extreme conditions, including severe dryness. American scientists discovered that water bears protect their cells with glass-like structures, enabling them to survive for decades without water.

In an age following the industrial revolution, where the human impact became inseparable from the natural landscape; it becomes increasingly difficult to identify the threshold. The meeting moment between these two landscapes is now slowly transforming into the urban norm, and it is important to transcend the attitude from spectacle to integration. Dialogue at this mental – and more importantly – spatial moment is imperative.

Stabilimentum bridges a new symbiotic relationship between humans and spiders, by trading spider nourishment and habitat for natural web fibers. The Stabilimentum system is comprised by three artifacts: the personal air purifying mask, the wearable air purifier and the spider web harvesting habitat.

The Post Natural Arctic, Hongjie Yang

This project explores the uncanny nature aesthetics in the context of our future geographic reality. The latest research indicates that a warming world will render desirable the northernmost latitudes, while the rest of the world will face dramatic climate destabilisation and all manner of shortages. Although the Arctic is foreseen to become a population center and locus of food production within the next 100 years, its landscape will not support conventional agriculture, both because of the effects of global warming and the new geographical condition of the region.

Power Play by Dutch Invertuals aimed to rebrand sustainability by exploring the future of environmentally friendly design.  Carefully balancing science and fiction, the show was set in a near future in which traditional power sources have been replaced by environmentally friendly alternatives. ‘From windows that act as solar panels to pigments that absorb light and store energy, we already have technological solutions that will enable us to create sustainable environments,’ explains Plomp. ‘The exhibition imagines how these technologies could change the image of green design.’

PRZEMAINY FESTIVAL 

1-4 September 2016, Copernicus Science Centre, Warsaw

Future cannot be predicted but it can be shaped. The participants of the Przemiany Festival organised by the Copernicus Science Centre will have a chance to get convinced that we all have the power to create the future.

We are interested in the creative power of humans that may change the world. We are limited only by our imagination. In order to develop it, we need to go beyond the borders of specialisations. For this reason, the festival combines science, art, design and new technologies. The programme of the event, which includes exhibitions, discussion panels, workshops, concert, theatre play, makes it possible for the partici¬pants to confront different ideas and points of view, encouraging them to critically reflect on the directions of the development.

Bio-robots, Elizabeth Beattie and Denise Wong

In a basement laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania, two roboticists have harnessed the innate sensing, swimming, and swarming abilities of bacteria to power microscopic robots. Even though their work sounds like the prologue to a dark science fiction film, Ph.D. students Elizabeth Beattie and Denise Wong hope these initial experiments with nano bio-robots will provide a platform for future medical and micro-engineering endeavors.

Ooho! is an edible water bottle. No more plastic wasted when you need to drink on the go. We created a cheap edible and biodegradable membrane made of natural ingredients: Calcium and Brown Algae.

The process used to create Ooho is based on "spherification", a gastronomy technique made popular by el Bulli chef Ferran Adria.

THE SOIL MOVEMENT exhibition - talks

22 April 2016 – 26 August 2016

Ever since the industrial revolution mankind has caused severe damage to the environment and ecosystems.  The Soil Movement exhibition investigates new ways of revitalizing these damaged ecosystems focusing on soil in the first chapter. The aim in the first place is to make it habitable again. At the same time these systems activate new methods to harvest food or to mine raw materials for example. Second step is to see if these projects represent a new world where man, nature and the economy can expand in a circular loop, without destructive consequences.

The Soil Movement exhibition will be organized in Transnatural Workspace Amsterdam and it travels to the NRW forum in Düsseldorf. The Regeneration theme series of three exhibitions explore new ways of restoration of these damaged ecosystems and polluted places (like soil, water and air).

Fungus Inhale Vaccination

The potential functions of fungi are not yet fully understood in the medical community. ‘The fungus inhale vaccination’ is a treatment designed to be inhaled. When a person inhales or digests the DNA- Vaccine incorporated and attenuated virus in the fungus, its antigen directly transfers to the lungthrough frequent use. Its shape, flavour and colours are designed to encourage people to grow them in the setting of the home. This encourages people to break the negative associations to fungus. In the future, the fungus will be used as a tool to further the development within the medical community.

An aesthetically manipulated pig heart-transplant because 'beauty is truly on the inside', a drone controlled by your own brain' and a DIY toolkit to manipulate your own bacterial data.

Body of Matter presents the work of ten artists that advance our ideas about the body. By tapping into the hugely expanded science of the body through fields such as Microbiology, Neuroscience, Genomics, and tissue culturing the participating artists in Body of Matter are able to enhance, protect, monitor, stimulate, and replicate functions of the body and behavior of human cells as never before.
