While Furihata was struggling to overcome his inmense gay panic anxiety of being acknowledged by him, Akashi calmly observed the scene unfolding before his eyes. His gaze meticulously examined each playerâs performance / how they adapted to playing alongside peers who were not their usual teammates. He even made a few mental notes about potential strategies and adjustments he might implement during Rakuzanâs next practices once they returned to Kyoto.
Even if he appeared indifferent to Furihataâs words, he was in fact listening to every single word directed his way. It was no surprise that everyone naturally praised Akashi for his accomplishments and the talent he possessed beyond basketball.
And yet, nothing could have really prepared him when Furihata asked him if he was okay.
He almost felt like laughing-- His father had never once felt the need to ask him that. Ever.
"I manage." Red eyes turned back to meet the latterâs gaze. Now it was Akashiâs turn to examine his companion. "Since I was young, my father made sure I excelled in everything. That also meant learning how to manage my schedule. If there is a will, there is a way." Even if it meant sacrificing time to nurture friendships and other⊠things. "Thank you for the concern, though. I donât think anyone has ever asked me that before. I appreciate it." Gratitude where it was due, of course. "Donât belittle yourself, Furihata-kun. After all, we did lose to Seirin in the Winter Cup.â For Akashi, that was a genuine compliment / his pride demanded honesty, even in defeat.
Furihata blinks, a deer (or chihuahua, rather) in the headlights as Akashi calmly explains his family situation as though it's something normal. "I see... I mean, that's very impressive." But. Is it actually possible to excel in everything? ...If anyone was capable of managing that, it would be Akashi. Still, what an incredible amount of pressure for a teenager...
And what does he mean, no one has ever asked him that before? Like, ever? Furihata has no idea what to say to such a shocking admission, but Akashi seems to brush right past this like he's recounting something even more menial than the weather. Do his teammates not ask him whether he's all right? Or check in on him? At all??? What the hell are they doing over at Rakuzan? Everyone on Seirin has asked Furihata if he's okay at least once! ...The man exudes anxiety, but still!
"Ah, well..." Shaking off the thoughts, Furihata tries to maintain his footing in this ludicrous conversation. "My teammates are very strong and tenacious. I admire them a lot. As for me..." No, he's not going to finish that thought. At least not in the way he originally thought. "W-Well, I'll keep working harder." The thought of facing Akashi on the court again makes him want to throw up, but he doesn't hold it against Akashi for being impossibly incredible. Mustering some courage, he adds: "If you ever feel, um, less okay... or, uh, just want to talk to someone who's normal and wouldn't pressure you... w-well. I'm around." What an incredibly lukewarm offer. "I mean... if you want...?"
