AUs That Should Be a Thing » Based on This Post
↳ 10 Hour Road Trip
The big four get bored one summer and decide to take a road trip around the country. Hiccup brings an old camera and Rapunzel can hardly put it down. Despite the occasional arguments, the gang has so much fun that they hardly believe when it starts getting cold and they all have to head back to school.
Unexpected {Human!Toothless/Merida}
Ah, archery! Merida lit up almost immediately, turning to face Toothless with a shine in her eyes and a bright smile on her face. ”Ah’m only tha best archer in all tha land,” she said happily. It wasn’t said in a bragging tone— it was merely fact, a fact that she was all too happy to state. ”Mum doesn’t like it. She doesn’t think it’s “suitable fer a princess” to be an archer. But Dad, he’s tha one who taught me since Ah was a wee lass.” She paused for a moment, thinking.
If he was so interested in archery, and, if she was being honest with herself, if she was so intrigued by him, why didn’t she just offer to teach him archery? Mum would never approve of it; the princess teaching a foreign, non-royal man archery? Heaven forbid. Of course, that would make it all the more fun. Merida bit her lip and glanced away, thinking quickly.
She came to a decision. Looking back at Toothless, she offered him an almost shy smile— almost shy seeing as the princess of DunBroch was a brave, confident lass— and said, “Ya know, if you’d really like ta try archery, perhaps I could show you sometime.”
The shine in her eyes could have been noticed from miles away. The very smile that tugged the corners of her lips was contagious, and he was smiling from it as she told him. At the mention of being scolded for practicing archery as a princess, his smile faded a bit. As she paused to think, he thought back to his own home. In Berk, the leaders, male or female, had to be some of the strongest fighters of the island. Things sure were a lot different around here.
A smile out of the corner of his eye brought his attention back, and he faced her with wide, curious eyes. Archery? Him, learn archery? His heart had begun to race a bit, but he realized moments after that it wasn't from the chance to learn how to use a bow. Instead, it was the way Merida was looking at him. Her beautiful smile, excitement and mischief in her eyes, a bit of sunlight trickling into the hood of her cloak, and he was staring at her, star-struck for all of two seconds. And then, he regained control. His final answer wasn't entirely due to the fact that he wanted to learn the weapon, but this, this was an excuse to see her again. To spend time with her. "Really? That... I'd love to do that."
Within the short while he had been granted to spend with her, he had easily come to love her friendship. Disregarding the opportunity for such a friend like herself was a felony, and he wasn't intending to leave that behind. A new friendship was formed today, even though just a short while ago, they were simply strangers passing along the streets.
Unexpected {Human!Toothless/Merida}
stepintotheopenair:
"Training to fight dragons?!?” she burst out. Of course it made sense; after all, he’d be right about his home not defending itself. But wow! Here she was, trained in swordplay and archery for the fun of it, and there the people of his village were, trained to fight and slay dragons to defend their home!
Her blue eyes glowed with admiration as she gazed at the dark haired boy. It was incredibly impressive, and he sat here talking about it in such a nonchalant manner, like it was no big deal.
Merida had to admit, she was coming to really like him. Like, a lot. He was kind and wasn’t treating her like glass like most people would after finding out she was the princess. He was honest and genuine, and she was enjoying talking to him. Plus, he was easy on the eyes, she sheepishly admitted to herself.
While Toothless gazed around the village square, Merida took the opportunity to admire him. Still a unused to the feelings that she was beginning to develop towards him, she tried to be subtle about taking note of his lithe frame. He wasn’t bulky, but nor was he thin— it was an attractive balance, and under the fabric of his clothes she could see the curve of defined muscle. Half shocked at herself for thinking such things, she quickly turned her gaze to follow his, looking out at the shoppers.
Toothless waited a moment before turning back to her, his eyes shining. He had to admit, it felt nice talking to someone about his home. He hadn’t made many friends during his stay here, but part of him nagged realistically. She’s a princess, with… princess duties or whatever. Did she have time for a friend? Especially one that wasn’t any sort of important heritige?
Berk didn’t exactly have royalty. They had leaders, best fighters, stuff like that. But he wasn’t taught on the ways of leadership here in this different land. His heart ached as he casted a glance over to her as she studied the townspeople.. He wanted to be her friend. He had only just met her, but she was against all the first thoughts he had upon hearing her name and title since his first arrival. And his imagination caught his attention; if she was casually walking amongst common people, surely she had time to have a friend? He would really like that.
Was she allowed to have a friend outside of royalty? Toothless’s head hurt. He was watching her though part of her face was hidden in her cloak. A few red curls leaked out of the cover, and they shined in the daylight, and he had to pause. He wanted to see more of her face. Too much of it was shadowed and concealed in the hood of her cloak.
She wasn’t the stuck-up, popular, always-craving-attention type of person that people on berk rumored to be the traits of princesses. Of course, most, if not all, have not ever met a princess. Among the female vikings, it was sort of an insult. It was used to make the woman feel week and spineless, if not selfish and dependant on others. It was a bit sexist, but that was part of the viking’s culture. It wasn’t often anymore that women were treated like that. Usually it was the children who picked on the weaker kids by calling them princess, but it was shortly grown out as they grew older. One way or another, they learned to be independent fighters.
Princess Merida broke all the thoughts that had ran through his head in the past years. Because right now, he was sitting down next to a normal girl with curly red hair, who insisted that she stay the background and spend a few quiet minutes chatting with someone she had just met. She did not put herself on a platform, nor did she act like she was superior. It just so happened that she had the title of princess. It did not define her, nor did it determine the way she acted.
"Yes, dragons." He chuckled warmly, crossing his arms at his chest and leaning against the bench. A second of awkwardness washed over him before he found a good subject to discuss casually. "But I see the art of battle and defense are not lost in these lands. Rumor has it that you’re quite the archer." His eyes sparkled. He had never handled a bow and arrow; while few vikings learned to handle them, they just weren’t necessary unless they were heavy duty catapult material. Toothless never had the opportunity to use a hand-fit bow. "I’ve always wanted to try it." He muttered softly, more to himself than her.
((Sorry guys, school hit me and hit me hard. I'll get to replies when possible))
Dragons - Toothless
sophietheanklebiter:
Sophie was just sitting on the rock, swinging her feet back and forth, her ankles hitting the rock as they swung. She supposed she could try to track down Hiccup if it came down to it and she could ask him to introduce him to the dragon he claimed was his best friend, the worst Hiccup could say was no.
Movement caught her eye, and her gaze traveled to where it was coming from. Coming around the bend was a dragon, a real life dragon. He had dark scales, a unique tail - one that she quite liked - and green eyes. More or less he would be amazing to draw, and Sophie swore that she would give it a try when she got back home.
She smiled at him, giving him a small wave hello, but not doing anything else, stopping the swinging of her feet. She didn’t want to scare him, this was the first dragon she had ever seen up close, the only other ones she had seen were flying up ahead of her on their way to wherever they were going. This was absolutely amazing.
She couldn’t wait to tell Jamie, she was sure he’d love to hear about dragons.
The girl waved. Casually. Toothless's head cocked sideways at the girl with his eyes narrow, curiosity taking it's course. She was a young human. Very small. Tiny.
He looked to his left, then opposite, carefully stepping forward another few paces a bit nervously. The random girl sat calmly as if awaiting something. Waiting for what? Him to approach? His eyes locked to the small girl, his tongue sweeping over his lips again with the taste of fish fresh on his tongue. His tail lashed, his ears flicking around. He didn't hear anyone else around him.
When he was only a tail-length in front of the girl, his head leaned forward and he took in her scent. She didn't have the familiar aroma of Berk, and instead smelled like Rapunzel or Merida. A regular human then. No spirit, no viking, just a normal human that did not roam these woods often.
He leaned forward and sniffed, getting closer each second to the small girl with curiosity and subtle greeting.
Sophie and Toothless
Dragons - Toothless
Little Sophie Bennett had somehow found her way back to Berk.
She was sure how she had wound back there, after the meeting with Hiccup she had assumed she would have never been able to find her way back to the cold place again. Though, there she was, back in Berk and wandering around the forest she had first landed in. Perhaps she would get to see Hiccup again, he had been really nice.
She found her way to a clearing, with a sigh she sat down on a rock. She was lost, without a doubt. Berk was confusing, especially due to the fact she had only saw an area of dense forest in her last trip before the settings changed again. It had been confusing, but, Sophie would manage, she was a smart kid.
This place was fascinating to her the way Wonderland fascinated Alice. Dragons flew in the skies, and it was incredible to look up and see them zipping past above her.
If only she was able to meet one…
The river ran just around the corner. At the edge, where his shadow wouldn't fall over the water, Toothless sat rigid with his eyes intent on the water. His diet usually consisted of saltwater fish, though there were creatures that swam under these waters with particularly good tastes.
There, a small form moved through the water, and Toothless's eyes shifted into mere slits. The shape moved slowly, with a relaxed complexion. Seconds of silence passed, with Toothless tense in his posture, until he dumped his head forward and grabbed the fish. It had begun to move by instinct, but his teeth caught it's tail and he dragged it up and out of the water. Throwing it in the air, it twisted and churned in attempt to escape, but was not able to avoid it's course into Toothless's awaiting mouth.
Swallowing it whole, he was halfway through a swallow when his ears flicked sideways. He paused, his eyes turning sideways, and then he allowed himself to swallow completely. With careful paws, he left his place by the river and strayed around the bend. Against the natural forest colors, a girl with colorful clothing sat upon a rock.
He kept to the side, his head poked around the tree, unmoving as he simply watched her. He licked his lips, to remove the fish tastes left over, and then raised his head to the girl with a simple step forward.
Toothless' Top Speed?
So I was watching episode 8 of Defenders of Berk this morning and I noticed something odd in the opening sequence. After a few tries, I captured a screenshot of what I noticed. It was this moment:
What we have here is a very clear example of a Mach cone streaming behind Toothless and Hiccup, meaning that they have broken the sound barrier.
So, seeing as how I learned a lot about sound waves and relationships in physics in university, I decided that I would try to calculate Toothless’ speed at this moment. I don’t know if anyone has done this before, but I spent most of today on this so here goes.
The reason I say this is Toothless’ top speed is because nowhere else in the movies or shows have we seen him form a Mach/vapour cone behind him, and breaking the sound barrier is a pretty max speed so we’ll assume then that this could be his top speed.
For those of you who don’t know what a Mach cone is, the short explanation is that its the collection of wave fronts of sound waves that have constructively interfered to form one large wavefront that trails behind the object travelling faster than the speed of sound. The cone is visible because of a sudden decrease in pressure as the amplified shockwave passes by, causing the water molecules in the air to condense. If you want a more detailed explanation, reference this wikipedia article.
The speed of the object, or the source of sound and its relationship to the dimensions of the cone can be derived through some simple geometrical analysis of the cone,
which shows that the object is moving faster than the wavefronts of the sound wave trailing behind it, causing the wavefronts to overlap along their edges in a cone shape. The angle between the cone and the central axis, we’ll call it θ, can be related to the speed of sound and the speed of the source by this equation:
Where v is the speed of sound and vs is the speed of the source. For us, this means that Toothless’ speed is equal to the speed of the source. All we need to do is find the value of the angle θ and the corrected value of the speed of sound for the conditions in which they are flying.
So, looking at our photo, we can overlay a cone outline (reference for why I drew the cone like I did) onto the vapour cone in the photo, and define a few variables.
From the wikia page for Toothless, it is said that Toothless’ full length is 10.0m, so this is a reference in our calculations.
In order to find the angle θ, because the cone is being viewed from a bit of an angle we will find it through the trigonometric relationship between the radius, r, and the height of the cone, h:
Since we have the length of Toothless, we can use that as a reference to find the dimensions of the cone.
To find the radius of the cone:
And to find the height of the cone:
By orienting the length of Toothless along each of the axes we get their length relative to Toothless’ length. By a little bit of measurement and ratio calculations (which I won’t bother to go through here because they are tedious and irrelevant) we find that r = 9.50m h = 8.30m
By using the tangential relationship between those two values, we find:
θ = 48.9°
So, now we have one of the two values we need for the Mach calculation. The other value we need is the corrected speed of sound.
The speed of sound in dry air at 0°C is 331.3 m/s. Now, although I do know the formula for the corrected value of the speed of sound in dry air, it is not helpful here because Toothless and Hiccup are flying over water, and there is bound to be humidity affecting the speed of sound.
By looking at the image, we see a bit of mist formed around the surface of the water, (despite the poor quality of the image but I am sure that there is some mist there).
Using a reference from the UK, for aviation purposes, a visibility of less than 5 km but greater than 999 m is considered to be mist if the relative humidity is 70% or greater. Thus we can assume that the relative humidity over water, because there is some mist, is at least 70%.
The other thing we need in order to find the correction for the speed of sound is the temperature. By looking at a world map of average temperatures throughout the year, and knowing the historic areas where vikings lived, we can ascertain that the temperature is fairly cool. There is no ice on the water, so we can safely say that the temperature is above 0°C. Considering there is some considerate cloud formation and that the mist formed over water usually forms at relatively cool temperatures, and because Berk is supposed to be a very cold place, let’s ballpark the temperature to be about 10°C. Not very warm, but not too cold either.
Taking these two estimates, we can calculate the corrected value for the speed of sound. Since I was unable to find the formula for this, I just plugged it into a program that I came upon and it spit out a number for me. (Note that the air pressure at sea level is 101.325 kPa)
This gives us the speed of sound to be 337.9 m/s.
Using the speed of sound and our Mach cone angle, we can finally calculate Toothless’ speed:
Toothless and Hiccup’s speed in this shot is given to be 448.4 m/s, or 1614 km/h.
Now, that seems like a pretty high speed for a boy and his dragon to be travelling, so I looked up a few references for how fast this is compared to say, modern day airplanes and whether or not Hiccup would survive travelling at that speed.
Now, the average speed of a passenger jet plane is 680-1000km/h. There are other jet planes that could go up to a speed of 3000km/h and above. The fastest powered jet plane is the SR-71 Blackbird with a speed of 3230km/h. So Toothless is travelling faster than a passenger jet, but still within an achievable range of a faster jet plane. Some of the fastest jet planes travel at Mach 5, but Toothless here is travelling at a modest Mach 1.3, or 1.3 times the speed of sound. So this speed is relatively reasonable. Considering the huge minimum flight speed Toothless needs in order to stay aloft, (at least 100 km/h, referencing from someone else’s analysis), this should be perfectly attainable for him.
As for Hiccup, this speed is definitely a large speed for him to be able to survive. I’m not going to get into the fact that he is wearing next to no protection and would probably be blown off by the sheer force of the wind he’s facing. The question here is: would he live?
Humans have broken the sound barrier before, but they have always been in the confined protection of the cockpit. Our real life reference needs to be of someone who was facing the elements without a metal shield to protect him. So, let us considering Felix Baumgartner’s incredible free fall. Recently, Felix Baumgartner became the first skydiver to go faster than the speed of sound, reaching a maximum velocity of 1,342km/h.
So, Hiccup and Toothless are travelling at 1614 km/h, which is still faster than Felix Baumgartner did in his free fall from the edge of space. However, judging by Felix Baumgartner’s survival, Hiccup would probably survive this flight speed considering that there are no sudden stops awaiting him, but rather Toothless will control the acceleration so Hiccup shouldn’t be dead from impact force.
One interesting side effect of travelling this speed however, will be that Toothless and Hiccup will not hear anything. Because they are travelling faster than the speed of sound, they are moving faster than the wavefront of the sound waves can reach them, so they are flying into a remarkable silence. This could be dangerous for Toothless and his navigation skills since we know that he can use echolocation for navigation, but considering this stunt was done in an open space in daylight, they should be just fine. In any other situation though, I would be skeptical.
So there you have it folks, Toothless’ max speed calculation based on the appearance of a Mach cone in the opening reel of DoB! If you made it to the end, thanks for reading this and I hope it was interesting!
TL; DR Toothless can fly at speeds of up to 448 m/s!
furyofthenight replied to your post: I’m so sorry over the course of my absence I…
Ah, don’t worry about it. I think everyone’s getting swamped with school, and I’m getting sick myself. Once Christmas break rolls around I think we’ll all have a little more breathing room to role-play :D
I hope so. Fortunately none of my profs believe in finals, so this is my last week of classes and may be my last week on campus depending on when/how everyone wants the final papers turned in. I’ll be switching straight to a full-time job once I get home, but its normal hours so I should be available late afternoons/evenings.
Also, Hiccup and Toothless haven’t hung out in a while and I personally believe that is a crime against humanity.
Yes it is a crime we must do something. I'll be thinking of an rp idea!
