THE HISTORY.

the second son born to king edward and queen cordelia of england. where their eldest son was what they would describe as a dream child, silas was the exact opposite. he was a fussy baby and threw more than his fair share of toddler tantrums.

while the king and queen kept their children at an arms length, the three windsor boys were as close as they could be. their parents were far from hands on parents and they were primarily raised by a fleet of nannies.

silas was both the middle child and the second in line for the throne, he was the spare heir. any attention his parents did pay, went right to james. nine times out of then, the only acknowledgement silas got from his parents was long, disappointed lectures.

silas grew up knowing that his brother would one day be king, a fact he never begrudged. not being heir gave him more freedom, something he learnt from a very young age. he didn’t mind the fact that james got all of the attention. as he got older, silas made his fair share of appearances in the press as well, though it was rarely good press. he was dubbed the royal wild child and the rebel prince, and he played his part well. 

silas didn’t care at all about his reputation in the press. he knew no matter what he did, they would focus on the bad and ignore anything he did with the charities he supported, or him graduating from cambridge. as far as the public was concerned, prince silas was a playboy who did nothing by party. 

there was never any doubt that james would one day be king, silas knew his brother would be a good one, the job was made for him. while many in his position, as second in line for the throne would have some jealousy, silas just knew his brother was the one for the job. 

silas had been out of the country when the news came. james had announced that he was abdicating from his role as the crown prince, stating that he was giving up the throne because he was in love and would be giving up his title and crown to marry. the younger prince was furious. what followed was a fight like no other between the brothers. 

silas refused to return home to london, saying he’d rather be anywhere than the same country as james. it was two months after james abdicated that silas returned home, for his older brother’s funeral. james was shot and killed outside of his home. again, silas learned of this from the media.

following the death of his brother, all eyes were on silas. he couldn’t galavant around the world, doing as he pleased anymore, he actually had to take his new found role as the crown prince of england seriously. he didn’t. silas has done very little to change his reputation in the now two year since james died, he’s still seen as a player and party animal, someone not fit to be king. before he left for genovia, the king and queen told silas that if he didn’t clean up his act, that he would me cut out of the line of succession and the crown would go directly to his younger brother.

someone who was close to james : james’s bff, someone who perhaps knew of james’ plan to abdicate and get married. they could either be supportive of silas or hate his guts, either would be great.

his advisor : hear me out here. silas having an advisor who he’d been friends with since they were kids. i see them being a young lord/lady. they take things a lot more seriously than silas does and constantly have to keep him out of trouble, which puts a strain on their friendship. could this be a possible romantic connection? yes, absolutely. could they grow to hate each other because silas refuses to grow up and take his role seriously. also yes.

after a momentary pause, rhys sucked in a deep breath through his teeth. he wasn’t entirely prepared to let someone else in, but thea seemed kind enough and observant enough to glean a little of what he was going through. if she was taking the time to get to know him, he’d let her in just a little bit. deflating slightly, he let out a humorless laugh. “do you ever feel like life is just going too fast for you to handle? but you have to just hold it all in because what other choice do you really have?” he questioned, though it was all entirely rhetoric. “you should really enjoy the free time you have now. go out and party, go to places you’d never have the chance to, and make terrible decisions.”

     thea had grown up being told that she felt things too deeply, that she cared too much for other’s. her grandmother always said it’d end up getting her into trouble one day, her desire to help everyone around her. rhys was virtually a stranger to her, and yet here thea sat, ready to hear every one of his current woes. “i do.. it’s like i’m lighting a fire under my ass for no good reason, trying to rush things to keep up with everyone around me and some non-existent expectations that i think i have to live up to.” she sighed. “my mom took a gap year before law school. she said it was one of the best years of her life...” what thea didn’t say was that matilda had returned home from her gap ‘year’ after only a few month, pregnant with thea.

     “do you mean icarus? hamlet’s dad never made wax wings, you’re thinking of daedalus. hamlet’s dad was the king of denmark who was murdered by his brother as a grab for the throne while hamlet was off at university in england,” thea smiled as she corrected the other. “my mother had the wise idea to name me after ophelia, so i’ve known hamlet beginning to end since i was fourteen. who knows what kind of name i would have ended up with if my dad was in the picture." it wasn’t often that thea wondered about her father, she’d never known him and her mother didn’t ever speak about him beyond the passing remark about thea sharing a trait with the mystery man.

“i can’t protect you, i’m delicate,” scarlett answers, punctuating the words with a dainty (and obviously fake) sickly cough. “wow, four months, look at you,” scarlett teases with raised brows, reaching up to upll her beanie lower over her ears. “you’re the absolute paradigm of monogamy.” forget the fact that scarlett had never been in a relationship in her life, period. she had no room to talk.

     “faker. i’m just asking you to keep me from being yelled at, not ride off into battle for me. although, i wouldn’t stop you if you wanted to live out any game of thrones dreams,” jack teased. “jokes on you, i don’t know what paradigm means so i’m going to take that as a sincere compliment.”

scarlett nearly gags on her coffee with his words about charlotte, wrinkling her nose as she takes a strained swallow. “if that has ever happened, please do not tell me i do not want to know. or if i have to know, make sure sonny knows too, i wanna see what kind of purple his face turns,” she snorts before folding up the paper. “please, anything longer than twenty minutes is too much commitment for you,” scarlett points out as she leans back in her chair.

     “are you going to be the one to protect me from sonny’s wrath? because he kind of scares me, but like in the way my little sister scares me, because i know i should be afraid, but also, seeing him get mad is funny,” he sighed. “give me some credit here, my longest relationship lasted about four months.”

scarlett lets out an amused little snort as she reaches for her coffee, taking a sip as she looks over at jack. “surprised you haven’t thrown your hat into the ring yet. bagging a princess seems like just the kind of trouble you’d get into.”

     “well, i mean lottie’s a princess and i’m not going to fuck and tell,” jack laughed. “isn’t courting a princess like, a really big deal? that sounds like too much of a commitment to me.”

gabriel turned around, his hands still in silas as he looked to his boyfriend. he laughed as he squeezed the other’s hands. “did you at least get a good deal on me?” he asked, is silas had been up for a date he was pretty sure he would have done the same. “how much is our love, then?”

     silas smiled before giving gabe a quick kiss. “a gentleman never reveals how much he spent on a date, gabriel,” he teased. “no one can say we’re selfish for at least a week or two though, with how much money is going to charity for this date of ours.”

“I don’t understand how this princess lady isn’t losing her mind,” Scarlett says, nose wrinkled as she turns the pages of the local Genovian paper that seemed to keep very close tabs on every motion in the palaces, including the arrival of new royals and who had been rumored to be seen with whom. 

“Dating is hard enough under normal circumstances without everyone getting their noses in it and giving their opinions. Isn’t this whole thing basically an international episode of The Bachelor but for really rich people?”

     “this makes the bachelor look boring,” jack laughed. he hadn’t been paying too much attention to the princess and who was courting her, but the bits he did catch seemed the be very dramatic. “it’s like we’re watching a reality show happen right in front of you.”

it was no secret gabe didn’t enjoy to be touched without either his permission or if you were one of the two people he was dating. he froze for a moment before becoming limp at the sound of silas’ voice. “did you really bid for my date?” he asked, reaching up to put his hands over silas’.

     silas wasn’t a jealous boyfriend. he didn’t vote on the date with gabe as a way to make sure no one else would, he really just wanted to have sometime away from everyone else to enjoy with his boyfriend. “of course i did. you know i can’t turn down the potential for you to wrap your arm around me trying to teach me to play piano,” silas laughed.

there were very few people in his life that rhys trusted implicitly and thea’s name was not on that list. even still, her tone was comforting and he found himself patting the empty cushion next to him. with stas ignoring him, arthur cut out from his life, and oliver in his life now, it was safe to say he was feeling exhausted and in need of a helping hand. “come and sit down. how much time do you have? there’s a lot to go over.” he joked, wanting to do his best to make her feel welcomed in his presence. taking another glance at her, he narrowed his eyes in thought before pointing a finger in her general direction. “right, you just graduated… pre-law, right?”

      thea sat next to rhys. the two hardly knew each other, but that didn’t mean thea wouldn’t try her very best to comfort him. she’d only heard a fraction of what had been going on with the prince since arriving in genovia and she was sympathetic and knew he probably needed someone to vent to if what she had heard was true. “i have all the time in the world,” she smiled. “yeah, i decided to take a year off before going to law school like my mom did to travel.”

     silas knew he didn’t need to buy a date with gabriel. they were dating after all. silas was smart, but that doesn’t mean he listens to logic. he knew he could go on a date with gabe whenever he wanted to, but he couldn’t resist buying the date with his boyfriend in the auction. 

     entering the room and seeing gabe’s back turned to him, silas took the opportunity to sneak up on him. carefully walking up behind him, silas carefully put his hands over the other’s eyes, “guess who?” silas mused, trying to put on a fake accent to throw him off. truthfully it just sounded like a bad imitation.

seeing her he walked up beside her, the only thing for a moment was just the crunching of the snow before he spoke. “how have you been?”

     helen had been playing outside with lukas most of the morning. it was moments like this when she really saw just how much he looked like lorenzo. his smile reminded her of her late husband every time she saw it.

    hearing the crunch of the snow as someone approached, the young queen turned to see her former brother-in-law. helen couldn’t remember the last time she’d seen gabriel under good pretenses. it was probably the day her and lorenzo were married. “i’ve been good,” she smiled as she knelt down next to her son. “lukas, this is your uncle gabriel.”

rhys was surprised to find that he’d been startled awake by thea of all people, his own knee-jerk reaction to smile back at her kicking in after a few seconds. he knew vaguely of her, she was friends with stas and that deserved his own sort of kindness from him. he sat up from the couch, moving his legs over so she had room to sit if she wanted to. “i wouldn’t say alright is the right word for what i am, but thank you for asking.” he replied, giving a humorless laugh as he deflated once again against the sofa. not many people asked him these days, opting instead to distract him with other things, not that he complained. “what about you? everything alright with you?”

     thea didn’t really have an opinion of her own of rhys. she had only vaguely known hum through alec and stas up until arriving in genovia. hearing all of the gossip going around about him, intrigued her in a way she couldn’t quite place. he seemed like he needed a friend. “did you want to talk about it? i’ve been told i’m a good listener,” she smiled. thea felt out of place in genovia. not in a overt why where she felt unwelcomed, but in that she didn’t have as many connections that others seemed to have with the other guests. “i’ve been alright. it’s been nice not spending every waking hour busy with school.”
